It’s still in our hands! 16:32 - Feb 16 with 4324 viewsVic

When we said we’d take 17th at the start of the season I’m not sure many of us realised what we were saying then! Did we realise it would be such a slog and we’d actually struggle as much as we have?

I’ll confess I underestimated the gap between the Championship and the Prem - the speed of play, the sheer physical size and strength of so many of the players, etc has been a revelation.

So to think that at this stage of the season our survival is still in our hands is really quite an achievement. Will we do it? I’ve no idea! I hope more than expect that we will, but whatever happens we’ve done OK this season and have set ourselves well to have a right good crack at whatever league we’re in next season.

Unfortunately, many of the sides up here have been here a while. They have had the money and time to build reasonably strong squads. Our quick rise hasn't helped us and if we do stay up, more money will need to be spent. I think we should have brought a bit more experience over youth, but it was always going to be s struggle. I thought 17th was obtainable, but knew it would be tight. Those who posted here pre season saying we were going to finish 10th or above were totally delusional.

Are we struggling more than we expected? We are very much in a battle for 17th. Much more than Southampton are. Perhaps we would have expected less of a gap to 16th but that really doesn't matter as long as we can get ahead of Wolves and stay there and ahead of the 2 below us.

Not sure how you’ve come to that conclusion. Wolves are effectively three points ahead of us with GD so it’s not in our hands.

They just gave Liverpool a scare so they are playing with confidence which we don’t want.

I thought we might get 17th but mainly because I expected a couple of point deductions.

It's still achievable. But I just don't see a relegation side in wolves and that's pretty much our only hope.

But you just never know. Everton have shown how one run of wins can really change your season.

We won't win 9 out of 10 as KM said. But if we can 3 from the next 6 it'll help.

If we match Wolves results from here to the end of the season apart from beating them at PR, we will finish above them. So, assuming that we also finish above Southampton and Leicester, the OP is correct in saying it is very much in our hands.

Wolves will stay up, they’ve got a lot of quality and they didn’t look light years off Liverpool, like we did. Yesterday was a well fought point but we still made a silly mistake and gave a goal away, that’s why we won’t be staying up. I think we’ll finish 19th, and a couple of points behind Leicester but with the whole bottom three on record low points.

How many points did plucky Wolves get for nearly matching Liverpool?

How many points did 10-man Town get for drawing at Champions League Villa?

Your relentles resignation to our fate is tedious. We remain in touch with Wolves because they are doing no better than us. We could do with winning the macthes against them and Leicester but there is no reason we cannot do that. (As well as no reason we will.)

Goal difference doesn't give them a point 🤣. Your statement makes more sense to say they effectively have 2.5 points more than us. But between now and the end of season goal difference can change (if we managed to beat them by 2 that's a 4 goal swing for example) It was only really the Man City game that killed our GD.

That's the spirit ... Wolves have lost two more games than us this season and we've already beaten them.

There are too many unknowns to make such a pessimistic prediction ... if Cunha tears a hammy next game they would be in serious trouble.

In February last year Leeds looked nailed on for an automatic spot as did Sheffield Wednesday the previous season.

A lot can still happen and yes it is still in our hands provided we beat Wolves at home.

We play Wolves in 6 weeks. This is a classic 6 pointer. A good win over Wolves would not only eradicate the points deficit, but could go a long way towards narrowing the GD.

Agree that Wolves looked a little too handy against Liverpool, but all we can do it focus on matching their results, and then beat them when they come to Portman Road.

If we beat Wolves at home and match them point for point in the other games we stay up.

Ergo it is in our hands.

So how can you say it’s in our hands if we have to match Wolves results? Sure, if we beat them, then we gain 3 points on them but we can’t control the rest of their results. We just have to do the best we can over the next 13 matches and hope we end up above three other teams.

It's a technical but absolutely true fact that it's in our hands. As in if we win all our remaining games we stay up and it's in our own control to do that. We don't need wolves to mess up in any way as long as we win all of ours, including against them.
Obviously winning all of ours would see us massively safe anyway, but the point stands.

If we win all our remaining matches we stay up irrespective of what other teams do. The very definition of in our hands!

It's in our own hands in the sense that we don't have to rely on Wolves to slip up, although as others have said, it's a technical point really. With 13 games to go, there will be plenty of twists and turns to come, so sit back and enjoy the ride! If the players continue to put in the effort and togetherness that they showed yesterday (and plenty of other times throughout the season) then that'll do for me, regardless of whether or not we stay up.

How are you finding this so difficult to understand?

If we beat Wolves we go a point ahead of them. Therefore, it’s in our hands.

So you reckon we'll get six points or fewer from the remaining 13 games? That's what it would need to register record low points for 19th place.

Not sure how our next games will go but I have long thought we would win our final four games, which I think will be enough.

Tbf if Wolves played like today against us it is very unlikely we'd win, or even draw. The entire team now have to up the game and be 100% from min 1 to FT for all the remaining games to have a chance of staying up.
