Makes the whole deal seem even weirder. All the PR about how much due diligence is done on players, and then we go and sign Williams right in the middle of an episode like that.

Is there definite knowledge of whether the club were aware or not of the crash and it's circumstances?

Only thing I can think of is was there some kind of legal/pre contractual stuff that meant we couldn't back out? Or, it's possibly just One Of Those Things.

Brandon Williams pleads guilty on 16:10 - Mar 14 with 3722 views | bsw72 | It happens - a good friend of mine drove home from the pub absolutely smashed (we had taken his keys off him but he had his spare as well), wrote his car off, 3 other cars which were parked, streetlamp and fence (was a built up area). Ended up prosecuted, had to pay for the emergency services, street lamp etc. We were in our early 20s, he's a different person now, and regrets it massively but was not hugely apologetic at the time. Not right at all, but who are we to judge?

I have no sympathy for drink drivers. If you're gonna drink leave your car at home. Why would you take your car to a pub knowing you're going to be drinking?

Don't get me wrong - am in complete agreement, and it took a number of years for him to earn any trust/respect back from the wider social group - but my point is people do stupid, thoughtless things which can ruin their lives and others in the heat of the moment. I imagine I would have a different view if I had been driving that Fiesta, but I wasn't. I'm not saying forgive and forget, but that's different from a second chance, if it is earned.

Brandon Williams pleads guilty on 16:38 - Mar 14 with 3425 views | gsoly | Sums up a lot that's wrong with modern day football fandom when you still see people saying Williams would be a 'great free agent' or 'would you take him back?' when there's this going on. I live in Manchester and play football with a lad who grew up with him (to a point). From what he's told us, if he ever plays professional football again I'd be astonished. I feel sorry for him on a human level but there has to be consequences to your actions.

There are consequences - he'll get a driving ban and fine. He's not had a contract offered by Man U, Ipswich or anyone and is currently without a club. In time, if he sorts himself out and is available to play, why shouldn't he try and get his career back on track? The alternative is to keep on punishing him for something he's done - far in excess of the punishment that the courts have decided on, even if he sorts himself out. I wish him well in his recovery and hope he gets and takes another chance. Doesn't for a minute mean there hasn't been consequences for his actions, there clearly has been.

Yes, good point, clumsy wording. I mean the issues he's dealing with that led him to drive his car like that are, I think, far deeper than people realise. He doesn't deserved to be sent to the gulag for one accident. He spent a long time in rehab and I think it's pretty remarkable he played as well for us as he did, in hindsight. Probably shows just how talented a footballer he is.

I know it was a different more 'freestyle' time but we didn't know the extent of the trouble that Michael Chopra was in until those Honest Businessmen turned up at training. These things happen.

On one hand, I do kind of agree with this, but it was only due to luck that he didn’t kill an innocent person. As long as he doesn’t get anywhere near ITFC again.

In relation to your first couple of sentences - Football has always been like that. A footballer does something stupid, reckless or silly at one club, gets booted out, another club comes in hoping that they’ve got a bargain.
Brandon Williams pleads guilty on 18:44 - Mar 14 with 2982 views | sjg | He’s an idiot and I’m glad he paid the price, but I can’t help feeling sorry for him. Those balloon things are not addictive, to be doing them to the extent that the rumours suggest he must have some serious issues that would likely have led him to much harder drugs were it not for regular drug testing which these don’t show up on. He has also been in the public eye from a very young age and subject to criticism and attention that most of us could barely fathom, nor would we want to. I hope he is able to put his problems behind him and find his way back into football - it would be a massive waste of talent if he’s not able to.
Brandon Williams pleads guilty on 20:44 - Mar 14 with 2745 views | sjg | Some nice quotes from him about us in the East Anglian too He told the More than a Match podcast: "I just went in in the summer and went to the manager (Erik Ten Hag) ‘I’m going to go to the Championship, I’m going to go and play in the Champ and experience something.' "Because obviously Kieran’s there and at that point I was in a bad situation off the pitch, stuff was going on – and Kieran got in touch with me and was like ‘come down here, it’ll be good for you.’ “So then I went down (to Ipswich). Kieran was there, Martyn (Pert) was there and Granty (Lee Grant). Obviously, Granty was now one of my coaches, but I shared a changing room with Granty. “We had that kind of like…I could speak to him on both sides. I could speak to him on serious football and I could speak to him like that as well.” He continued: “Ipswich, I really liked it. It was good, it was going well, I was doing well. "The team was great, it’s a proper serious football club with what they do and the standards. “If you ain’t training, you’re noticed – you don’t look good. “I had a couple of injuries, and then we got to January. A lot of things were starting to go crazy off the pitch, with friends and stuff like that. “And Kieran could see that in me, and he was like ‘go back to Manchester for two weeks, go sort out what you need to sort out and then come back to who you are.’ “So I was like ‘ok, no worries.’ Though he never returned, Williams, who is now without a club after leaving United at the end of his contract last summer, said he was delighted to see Town promoted to the Premier League. “He (Kieran) knows me," Williams continued. "Prior to that, they could see it coming. "Granty was picking me up to go to Starbucks and we’d go and have a chat in his car and we’d just speak about things. “So I ended up coming back to Manchester to sort a lot of things out. But things got worse, so then the process didn’t get me back down there. “Then we got to March and I started training by myself, was training good, but it just got to… they were fighting for promotion and so it was just better for me not to go down there. My head wasn’t there. “Obviously buzzing that they ended up getting promoted, that was a good feeling – I was still supporting them, I was watching them every single game.”
