What's to stop them buying the women's team back for 50p next financial year before selling them again to the same subsidiary the following season for £200m. Rinse & repeat every 2 seasons? Just use the women's team as a way to for the owners to inject vast sums of money into what would otherwise be a massive loss making men's team.

"What's to stop them buying the women's team back for 50p next financial year before selling them again to the same subsidiary the following season for £200m." That's a valid point and the only thing would be the shareholders disapproval and subsequent sacking of board members.

I think HMRC might have some thoughts it. Selling a asset at market value (Could argue that it's overvalued still) is easy to do as a one time thing. However selling it back and forth in that rinse and repeat is straight up fraud and HMRC would be on that very quickly.

There are rules relating to assets being acquired otherwise than in an arm's length transaction. I'm not saying they're watertight, or enforced with vigour, but they are there.

This is true to an extent, but it terms of finances, it is royally fcked. The movement of ownership of community assets from local rogues to autocratic nation states and hedge funds has irreversibly changed the game in a negative manner in this country. All IMVHO of course. But I'm right.

Chelsea women’s team has a very high market value, probably one of the highest in world (women’s) football being serial league winners, packed with internationals, regular on terrestrial and satellite TV. Therefore Chelsea can apply a decent fair market value to the deal. Not sure how ITFC are structured, but even if we could act in the same way, I doubt it would give the club much more than a high 6 figure sum.

Agreed. Ultimately it’s lax regulations that allow this to happen. It still kind of stinks and isn’t particularly moral, but it is allowable.

I see Chelsea made a big profit after selling their women's team on 09:50 - Apr 1 with 1101 views | Churchman | It’s been going on for years. Real Madrid used to sell their training ground to the government for millions and buy it back for a Euro or two every year. No doubt stunts like that are happening in various ways all over the place. Money, greed, corruption. It is so fashionable. From Trump to Chelsea, rules? Nah, they’re for mugs.

HMRC would only get involved if the purpose was to avoid or evade tax. If, in a hypothetical example, a sporting business sold an asset to a subsidiary at a profit, and declared that profit for tax purposes then HMRC would have no issue.
