Anyone got that sort of feeling that we won't go up next season yet? 18:03 - May 8 with 5748 viewsWarkystache

I mean, we should, with that squad, the money and the ability to purchase better. I just worry about our defence. Bloody dodgy at times. Perhaps I'm worrying unnecessarily?

Well, this season our defence has been no worse than Leicester and better than Saints and they'll be our two main rivals for promotion. Last season we had the 7th best defence in the division and we've strengthened it since then. I don't think we should be unduly worried about our defence going into next season, the Championship is a very different level to the Prem.

No not really but

Head says it’s going to be really difficult 1) we don’t really know what we have as a first 11, 2) we have quite a lot of important acquisitions to make and nothing is certain with incoming players, 3) we’ve had a season losing a lot, it’s a big lift and only time allows us to regain that winning culture even if that’s as the season goes, and 4) the season is long and injuries have been a feature this season we don’t know how those players will come back and contribute eg Wes, Ogbene, SS, Chappers.

I suppose that’s me saying that im cautiously optimistic but its easier to take a view in Aug.

In response to this, I'd say to look at Burnley. They had a losing mentality, they lost their manager, and had an insane level of turnover in their squad (over 40 players leaving or arriving) and they have just gone up with 100 points. Prem money and parachute payments give you such a huge competitive advantage over everyone else in the Championship. I think we're probably in a stronger position than Leicester and Saints, and I'd say than any of the three that came down last year, so we absolutely should be challenging for automatic promotion.

Nothing is guaranteed and it won't be easy, we'll have to work hard and be close to our best every week. But I don't see much reason to be overly worried about next season, even in the worst case scenario that we lost McKenna and half the squad, we'll have the resources to bring in a good manager and quality players and should still be one of the favourites to go up.

All depends who is here come the start of the season so no point worrying yet

Comings and goings should not have a negative impact. We now have ambitious owners and money to invest. Even if a couple of the players move on, we will be looking to replace them with players that are better than we had when we were last in the Championship.

However you look at it, next season’s squad will be significantly stronger than last season’s.

There are never any guarantees, and teams will be out to beat us, but we are very well placed to gain promotion again next season..

You are worrying unnecessarily. I feel like people are forgetting what a big jump in quality we've just seen. We won't be playing against anywhere near the same level of attackers next season.

Johnson - O'Shea - Greaves - Davis (I am assuming Tuanzebe will leave) is plenty strong enough for the Championship. If we lose one of O'Shea or Davis then I back us to replace them well enough with the funds available.

Plus, we should be able to outscore most teams in that league with our sttacking talent.

We just need to get the midfield recruitment right.

Team spirit factor is big - that's why so many clubs get relegated and then drop even further.

But on that front, I think we're in better shape than we could've been. Leicester and Southampton seemed to turn pretty toxic towards the end of the season and their players will have felt that. Our fans stuck with the team, sang to the end (there's no way crowds like Newcastle away weren't noticed by the players) and we competed til the end of the season, more or less.

The only big factor now is the expectation from fans and media. We haven't dealt with that before. And some of our fans are pretty quick to lose their minds when things aren't going to plan (as all fans are, tbf)

There's no guarantee and it's a tough league..I hope our supporters realise and are patient. Had we finished top ten last season it would have been a nexcellent effort after league one. Next season there's obviously more expectation but top 6 would be solid. Obviously I hope we win the league and we should be top 2/3 but top 6 is okay.

The club is on a journey and developing. It's not going to be linear all time.

Top 6 really *isn't* OK - this team has had £130m spent on it.

Southampton and Leicester are a rabble; if we assume that Sheff Utd go up, then there's really not a lot of quality in the rest of the division.

Brum, weirdly, are going to be a huge threat. Wrexham less so - Phil Parkinson has never been any more than a Div 3 manager. I could see Warnock ending up at Wrexham by October...

Central midfielders and a quality replacement or two for Delap

Agreed. Two central midfielders - Humphreys might be one of them. And a Delap replacement along with a back up. Easy to say, harder to do.

I don’t see Harness or AAH returning and I suspect one keeper and a defender will go. I suspect the side will change a fair bit again and after a season struggling a new face or two will do no harm.

Overall, I’m cautiously optimistic.

I'm cautiously optimistic for next season.

I don't want to be Billy big balls and say we will win the league, 100 points and 100 goals but equally I don't want to sell the players short with their capabilities.

I think the thing with the Championship is that it is so unpredictable for the most part and that itself brings worry. I just hope our poor home form from this season is extinguished early on next season otherwise we could be in for a shock.....

Next season is going to so so different to the last one in the champ.

That was full of joy and excitement. This one will be full of expectation.

I’m really not looking forward to it.

FWIW, I think we make the Playoffs, and see what happens

The parachute teams (bar Luton) were so far ahead of the rest of the league this season, and we feel in a better state than any of them that have gone down.

Realistically for automatic contention, the teams from 5th downwards need to find an extra 20+ points that they managed to get this year

Sheff U were hopeless last season, let in over 100 goals in league, lost 5-0 4 times, 6-0 and 8-0 amongst others....they signed a few decent Champ and L1 players and finished 15 points ahead of 4th place

We've got to be going down and looking to get 95-100 points, they are the sort of amounts that you need now - that's always a big ask but feels like as long as we don't totally screw things up it is almost impossible to finish outside the top 4-5.....but if you miss the top 2 then play offs always a a massive risk

Am with the consensus - we should be a top two contender, odds are in our favour. But can't take it for granted with all the unknowns at this stage.

Quite possible some of our current players get complacent, expecting it to be easy after what they've been up against. Make a few sloppy errors in the early games that mean we don't have the best start. Which also gets in their heads. KMs cool and methodical approach should manage this though.

Maybe the summer window doesn't go so well, both in terms of who we lose and who we can or can't bring in.

Also there's the chance someone like Wrexham or Brum "do an Ipswich" and we end up the Leeds of last season and flunk the playoffs.

It's going to be exciting at least. A long summer ahead first though.

To preserve peace of mind, the handiest default mechanism has usually been to fear the worst.

From 1986 onwards that would have generally stood you in good stead psychologically.

Thanks to the American owners, radical restructuring on and off the field plus parachute money, we've justified cause for sustained and credible optimism.

There will be player ins and outs, but our squad will be considerably stronger than at the start of the 2023-2024 season in what will be a weaker Championship.

A few nerves won't harm us, but top two is a very realistic goal. A new golden era in the club's history has already begun and this season's relegation is a painful bump on the way.

I feel like we're in for a few ups and downs, even with a swift return to the PL, establishing ourselves will once again be so tricky. Might be a few yo yo years ahead until something just goes extra-right like with Forest. I'll take this over being stuck long term in the Championship though.

How does a team from L1 'spend big' in the championship? Have the rules changed or have we forgotten all about PSR now we've sampled the premier league?

I assume they'll have the same rules as we had on entering the championship, in that no matter how rich your owners are, you are limited in what you can spend.

I hate it when people say ‘we should’ be promoted - just whiffs of arrogance.

The reality is we are a Championship side at the moment, not a Premier League side. The players we have bought in are Championship players really - don’t let the price tags fool you.

We will be a strong side - but there will be many. The Championship is a brutal league, it’s so difficult to get out of it, and if we do, it will be because we’ve been at our absolute maximum and earned it.

Agree with the first sentence, but that’s about it.

We have a squad that is currently lower end PL quality, one that had its moments this season. One that was undermined by a litany of bad luck with injuries. If we hold onto most of the squad, and replace a few with upgrades, we will be very strong next season. There are never any guarantees, and the Championship does throw a few curveballs, but we are well equipped to deal with it.

What’s wrong with a bit of arrogance? We should go up - we have the funds and most of the players are very good by championship standards. The club will add new players and those players won’t be bit-part, but ones who will be expected to improve, with the aim of promotion this season.

It's not lower end prem quality. We are 15 points adrift of safety.

We won't be making any upgrades this summer. It will be Delap going, Enciso and Cajuste returning. All fantastic players.

We have a chance but expecting promotion it's just not how ITFC has ever worked.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

It’s not a lower end PL squad, not to say some won’t go on the be PL players, but it’s a strong Championship side, not PL.

Delap, Cajuste, Tuanzebe, Julio & O’Shea - beyond that nobody has really looked at home in the PL.

There is work to do in the summer, to establish a settled group that served us so well in L1 & Championship - it currently looks a little unbalanced, without really knowing our strongest side and without momentum and confidence we previously had.

What is 15 points adrift if it’s not lower end PL? As has been shown this season in the Championship, in most cases there is a gulf between a struggling PL club and the Championship.

Yes, some good players will go, but there is plenty of scope the improve the squad elsewhere. There will be new loans too - likely to be PL fringe players.

Expecting promotion is arrogance. Knowing it’s what we should realistically achieve is not.

There is a lot wrong with a ‘bit of arrogance’, in football in general, but especially the Championship, it will humble you very very quickly.

KMc won’t allow for any arrogance to creep in, he often speaks of humility, and the need to earn everything rather than expect anything.

It will be very difficult to improve on a Delap, Cajuste or even a Tuanzebe this summer back in the Championship.

There are still questions marks around individuals we have who haven’t delivered performances for Ipswich, irrespective of what they have done for other clubs in the past, the only thing I am concerned with is what I see in an Ipswich shirt, and there are certainly still questions marks around marks around some going in to next season - and whether they are a fit for what we need.

Couldn’t agree with this more. It worries me people having an expectation that we should come back up. Aside from maybe the promotion season in league one, our recent success has come from punching above our weight so I really hope belief doesn’t turn to arrogance or entitlement.

Look at Luton for example. They gave the PL a really good go and were comparable to us in many ways.
