There's probably a decent chance Delap plays for us in the Champ, right? 09:41 - May 13 with 4429 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

With seemingly so many clubs desperate for his signature at only £30m, it's going to take a lot of tooing and froing with his personal terms, with each club offering different wages, length, bonuses etc., all trying to outdo each other. His representatives will be going over it all with a fine tooth comb to extract the best deal, and paring that with other considerations like who's more likely to play him (he's going to need to play if he wants to make the England squad), plus who's going to be in Europe (and who might be challenging for it) and who's likely to be looking at other honours, who's likely to be a basket case, fanbase, desirability of living in the area etc etc.

The presumably at our end we still have scope to negotiate sell-on clauses?

So my thinking, with all that to sort out and no need to rush with so many options likely on the table, his sale could go quite near to the end of the transfer window, well after the season's started. Whilst we'd obviously prefer to get a new striker bedded in, Delap will surely still play if he's still here? Unless we decide to protect him in case of injury?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Another possibility is, he goes to the u21s, gets crocked until feb/march, comes back and fires us to promotion. Of course not wishing I'll on Liam, but wonder whether it will be done before or after u21s- club pushing for before I would imagine, guaranteed sale.

How is he better off playing Championship football though? He's proving nothing to anybody. He is a PL player and needs to go and play at that level, testing himself further against the very best (agree he needs to be choosy about where he goes and make sure he is getting games).

In addition (not that we have any say in the matter) it’s unlikely his value goes up by playing a further season in the championship. And if in some strange world he did play for us next season and got less than, say, 20 goals, it probably goes down.

I'd love it if he stayed but given there's seemingly about 14 English clubs qualifying for European competitions next season they are all going to want extra strikers to cover the extra fixtures.

Ideally, yes, but surely it's out of our hands? How do we "let it drag on"? He signs for whoever he fancies once the representatives and lawyers sort out the major and minor points to get the best deal. I don't see how we have any say in that, unless we added a clause that says it has to be done by a certain time, which I've not heard of before.

Unsure if this can be done, but MA speaks to LD agent. He says you put the feelers out, we know he’s going, tell any interested parties they have until June 15th to submit their £30m bid and their wage offer… LD then has until June 20th to decide.

Now THAT is us being very well protected

It's probably all going on behind the scenes as we speak, unless LD has told Ashton that he has no desire to move.

Soundings will be being made already and, if need be, it wouldn't surprise me if the whole matter goes to the footballing equivalent of 'best and final offers'.

Because it's " miles under the belt" we games, games, games games, games =experience. He didn't play that much at Hill. He joins us and plays games. We're in the PL and he's had games at thus level. You take out his 2-3 month purple patch in the first half of the season and although he's played thd games he found it harder to make an impact as defenders have dealt with him.

Put him in another PL club and he won't continue to get games.

Stay with us he will get more games and learn the extra tools he needs to adapt to defenders ta tics against him. We'd hopefully only be talking 1 season in Championship and we'd get promoted again...again he'd get more games. If he goes to any of the so called big PL clubs, he'll sit on the bench more than he'll play. He'll learn far less " watching" at those clubs, than doing at Town.

We can adopt a pope like approach to this. Rather than black or white smoke, we can focus on his boots after the final whistle against West Ham.
If he keeps them on he's staying. If he gives them to someone in SBRL in a Dyeresque style, we know he's off.
I wonder what ever happened to those boots? Did the recipient wear them? Sell them?

I suspect his chances of playing for us in the Championship are slightly lower than my chances of a second date with Natalie Imbruglia.

I wouldn't hold a candle for that but we are only talking personal terms here, when the sticking point is normally clubs refusing to meet in the middle on a transfer fee. And talks seem to have begun in earnest the second we became a corpse, which is/was six weeks before the window opens, two months before the new financial season kicks off. He should be all talked out by June, I know I would be.

He played all the while for Hull, apart from the period he was injured. If he's worried about time on the field then he should choose a lower PL outfit like Everton or West Ham. He won't make the same progress with the space and time afforded to strikers in the Championship.

Having him here would be really unsettling IMO.
Would also mean that if we haven’t got in our replacement by then he’s going to then need time to bed in and learn the system.
But then if we DID have his replacement in, and he was on the bench behind LD, that too would feel wrong.

More chance of me playing for us in the Championship next season.

His representatives will be talking numbers now with other clubs - he’s in a fantastic position, will get a big move, and a bumper contract.

Sure we are doing our prep work now for the replacement we would want in.

Hope it’s done quickly then. Don’t see the point in him being an ITFC player when we know he’s going

Agreed, but if he was still here (because we had no choice, the deal simply hadn't concluded) surely you'd have him in the squad at least, if not starting? The strikers rotate in our system anyway, so whoever else we might've got in might be on the bench behind Hirst to start with anyway.

It would be unsettling, but if you've got the talent still here - he's still our player and the season's underway - then surely you've got to use him? He'd be lethal at Champ level.

Can't see us risking what would be our largest ever transfer fee received on a player (that you would hope) we should have a replacement in for by then.

The ONLY scenario in which this happens is if Liam has fallen in love with ITFC so much that he does the big "I'm not fu**in' leaving!" speech ala Wolf of Wall Street.

So not likely.
