VAR is literally useless 17:10 - May 17 with 2051 viewsLinners

Handball outside the area, can’t intervene because they don’t think it’s a red
Defender plays balls in penalty area, can’t intervene because it’s not a big enough mistake

So both decisions stay with the on field decision.

Just bin it.

I think fans would be more accepting of VAR if it had all but stopped bad decision making. But if anything it's the reverse. Every game seems to involve some sort of controversial decision and the general opinion is a lot of these decisions are wrong.
Why ? well basically because it involves humans making a decision, just as it did before when a referee made his decision. These decisions are wide open to bias and it happens time and again. I recently watched a Man Utd game where a defender caught an opposing player half way up his leg. You would think a red card. Wrong, absolutely zilch and yet we have had a player sent off for that and also the opposition had a sending off for a tackle on Omari.
Truthfully where is the point in VAR ? Just a costly waste of money. Jobs for the boys. Time wasted whilst waiting decisions and no better than a referee and his lines persons.

Binning it would have been the same outcome on those close to call decisions. Probably just about a red but still would have felt a little harsh. Second half it changed a key decision for a clear offside.

Net result is VAR resulted in more correct decisions then if if hadn't been used. There wasnt tons of time taken. People love to moan about it. Absolutely love to but ultimately today it improved the decision making.

Without VAR there is all the same moaning about wrong decisions. People have just decided that we were all fine with all the rubbish decisions before VAR. The stuff VAR get wrong is still human error. It will continue to get automated and get better.

Completely agree -it’s a rubbish system and actually leaves more to interpretation in situations like those today. Either make it completely black and white or stop it.

It didnt improve decisions today. It made two bad ones.

And delayed matters, taking away all teh spontaneity.

I would rather have the imperfections of human decisions made instantly, than made after a delay which saps all the joy out of a goal.

The guy thought he'd scored for about 5 minutes before it was taken away. Unacceptable. Bin it until the tech is ready to judge offside in the build up before or immediately after a goal is scored.

It was a clear enough offside that any competent linesman would have flagged for it anyway.

What is a huge concern to me is the human decision of whether or not to have a VAR intervention. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I see this as another way to tilt the field in favour of the big teams. Referee gives the big team a decision - no intervention. Referee gives the little team a decision - whoaa, time for VAR to review it and overturn it. Premier League, corrupt as f@#k.

My take on it has always been the same, why can’t we just have competent officials using it? Given that our officials seem to swan off to Saudi every other month to officiate a game over there, is there any reason why we can’t use officials from another country? You rarely ever hear of any issues in France, Germany or Holland for example.

Exactly. If the linesman can't flag that then he doesn't know how to do his job.
I can understand that the ref might not have been able to see if it was in or out of the box.

It wasn't anywhere near 5 minutes and it stopped a travesty of a wrong decision. Using that as an argument is frankly mind boggling.

It wasn't super clear to the naked eye it hit him on first view but what are we arguing here? VAR is bad because a linesman (not VAR) should have seen something he didn't flag for meaning we shouldn't have VAR.

It's a bizarre spin this as VAR. Donald trump logic. VAR did it's job.

It annoys me that they don't try something drastic in the league cup. T

ry sin bins. I think that would be a great addition to the game.

Get rid of accidental out of the game. If you do wrong it is always wrong, not having accidental in the game would make it so much better.

Still we don't see sportsmanship in the game. Why is there not a sportsmanship award? This should be rewarded.

In the old days the ref would have had the Lino flagging offside for the 2nd Palace ‘goal’ and disallowed it, no questions asked.

Not strictly true - when it was first brought in into union matches there were a lot of complaints about it. And matches were going on for a long time whilst officials were making decisions. With more experience, it has become better.

Apart from goal-line technology I’d do away with it, as yesterday proved, it’s still very much subjective. It’s only served to over complicate decisions. I’d happily go back to the decisions 100% being made by the officials on the pitch, but also accept they will get things wrong from time to time.

Football was one of the last major sports to adopt it, and it's as if they looked at cricket, rugby, NFL etc and just binned the things that work

Problems with VAR

- Narrow range of what can be looked at
- The fact that is instigated by people who are not in the ground
- Complete lack of transparency while they are doing whatever it is they do

Give it to the teams, allow the teams two failed reviews per half for anything they want to be looked at, but they have to specify what they are appealing for (e.g. number 7 was offside). But not to appeal for someone to get a card.

Have the VAR people look at all yellow and red cards

I disagree.

Far from getting rid of the distinction between deliberate and accidental, I'd like to see it more pronounced.

A straight red for the totally cynical 'took one for the team' fouls that stop counter attacks would improve the game immeasurably (or a sin bin could be good for this?). I know they've always been part of the game but it's getting ever more prevalent and is so frustrating to watch.

I can't think of another sport that allows such blatant and deliberate cheating to go relatively unpunished.

They also need to look at the head injury rule which is being massively exploited too.

The rule was absolutely fine before they complicated it.

It required a level of judgment from referees. That is their job. Same as judging whether a foul is too agressive and warrants a card, or whether contact crosses the line into a foul. Part of he assessment would inevitably be the distance and speed of the ball, and whether they were sticking hands out for no reason.

In trying to codify it they have made it infinitely worse. See also offside.

I’m saying the linesman didn’t do his job because he should have noticed a little thing like slapping the ball away outside the area.
The VAR thing is separate.
They messed up on a different issue.

I've said it before & nothing has changed my opinion...

There's nothing wrong with bringing technology into the game, but it's still humans who are making decisions (too frequently wrong) having used the technology

Drop VAR & return to just the 1 human (the ref) making a decision (right or wrong) instead of the on field officials & particularly, a whole team of VAR officials, who between them, still get far too much wrong

It's this, that is taking far more away from the game than it adds

That's not how it works. They still flag now for offside. VAR would have had to overturn it.

The only time they don't flag is a delayed flag if not sure but they still put the flag even in those scenarios if their belief is it was offside.
