Are we going to be looking for ANOTHER new keeper in the summer? 07:36 - May 19 with 4601 viewstractorboy1978

After a seemingly impressive start, Palmer looks less and less like a keeper that suits us IMO. If we want to dominate the ball and play out next season, we need someone better with their feet. And he’s been beaten too easily for me several times in the last few weeks.

It's a big issue for me. Bigger than many people realise. The adrenaline of his first wave of games got him through, but he's reverted to type since - a solid Championship keeper that's never going to be part of a team that establishes in the Prem.

It's a big concern for me at the moment, beaten far too easily too often. If we had thought he was the answer we would have signed him in the Summer.

I suspect Palmer will be ok next season and there are other priorities but it's another hasssle now.

He's an odd one. Pulls off the odd reaction save that he has no right to make, but then lets one in that a top end Championship keeper should absolutely be saving. He's also not that commanding in his area and he's not great with his feet. He was a panic buy for sure, but one we had to make with Walton injured (and not playing great) and Muric having completely lost any semblance of form.

Whether we will be prioritizing a new keeper, I'm unsure. We've got other areas that are a bigger priority. However, I think if a keeper we really fancied the look of became available that we'd go in for them. I don't think we see Palmer as much more than a stop gap and if we don't replace him now, we'll be replacing him if we go back up.

We have keepers on our books with good records in the Championship, and there are other areas that need strengthening more urgently. None of them look capable of making the step up to the PL but we can worry about that if and when we get there.

No but I suspect Muric will be first choice next season. Palmer was a stopgap signing.

Im all for developing Muric & Walton as goalkeeping team next year.... a solid year in the Championship with a specialist coach is what they need... recruitment of a top keeping coach is more important than buying new keepers imo...

I still expect Muric and Palmer will be battling for the position next year. Or, one of them moves on and Walts remains the backup. Both are plenty good enough for the Championship, lets save some money there and rethink should we be PL bound again.

A new goalkeeper is the least of our worries

One of the main reasons we’ve been left exposed and panicked the keeper is the lack of legs in midfield and how the opposition ripped the through us week after week leading to panic and mistakes

See the Vardy goal Saturday …….amongst many others

Key this summer for me is midfield 100%. Athleticism , Strength , Physicality and Pace

This with bells and whistles on it. It should be 3rd on the list after 2 centre mids.

As I posted the other day, Carl Rushworth is available and I bet McKenna will want us at the front of that queue.

Last time Muric played in the Championship he was named in the PFA team of the year.

Don't expect him (or the £8m invested in him) to be written off.

Palmer was also outstanding at that level this season.

Id be astounded if we don't show serious interest in him.

Makes far too much sense.

I think it depends what his standing is like within the club off the pitch and with the rest of the squad.

Won the league playing 40 games the last time he was in it, you wouldn't normally be saying a player with that claim should be and will be moved on so happily.

But if there's a character issue, and he's had some issues with Kosovo, that might swing it. He's also never looked totally at one with some of the players in front of him.

I think if he can get his head right he'd be absolutely brilliant in the Championship.

Given our habit of going back for previous targets, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was very much at the top of our list of targets.

Big ask given reported interest from the Prem and European clubs, but a real chance for us to get a long term number 1 keeper in.

He's not even second choice currently. I'd be amazed if he's anywhere near the first team next season, if he's still here.

It wouldn't surprise me if Slicker is ahead of him in the pecking order now.

I don't think it's something we need to visit this summer. We have at least 3 keepers in the building that are sufficient for the Championship.

If we manage to get promoted again, it will definitely have to be looked at then though.

And that therein lies the problem.

‘If we get promoted we’ll sort it then’ and leave ourselves in the same position as last summer? Using some crap data driven programme again?

No, let’s get it sorted this summer and get ourselves a long term number 1 that can move back up to the Prem with us and not have to worry about it next summer.

That's because it's not a now problem. We are in a strong position financially compared to most team in next years Championship but we still have to cut our cloth, and we have much more pressing issues to deal with. We need surgical repair of our midfield and our attack, and without these were unlikely to bounceback.

Yes, in a perfect world we would find our perfect no.1 this season but we need to use our resources in more important areas first.

Also, as I've mentioned before. The perfect fitting no. 1 may already be here. Hladky was pretty awful in his first season and most fans had written him off after we signed Walton. Look how that turned out. We need to give players more than 1/2 or even 1 full season in pretty much the toughest league in the world before we try and push them out the door.

He's already proven himself to be a very solid Championship keeper, with weaker aspects of his game being footwork and distribution. We must have known this when we signed him on a 3.5 year deal, so my guess is we're ready to go with what we have until at least next summer.

We're all too aware after all that the jump from excellent Champ player to passable Prem player is now enormous; keeper department's little different in that regard. The outcry after losing to Leicester yesterday was as though we'd just lost to a Coventry, or a Stoke, maybe even a Blackpool. Truth is that Leicester are at worst the 22nd best team in the country. How often have we turned over teams of that standard over the past two decades?

I don't mean to downplay how short we've fallen this season but it's maybe worth remembering. Most of the sides we'll face next year aren't near the standard of those we're currently calling rubbish. Palmer wouldn't face nearly the same level of examination as he's endured so far (neither would Muric for that matter, though I suspect this ship's sailed).

If we were to wait 12 months and if we're blessed enough to go up again, that would hopefully place us back in a position to attract a proven keeper in the event Palmer doesn't push on sufficiently. I'm thinking our version of Matz Sels, who was signed by Forest at 32 years old last winter and hit the ground running: one of the best Ligue 1 keepers when he joined, but only costing £5m due to his age. We may even be able to sort a loan deal for a proven PL no. 2. The above feels preferable to rolling the dice on another potential up-and-comer again, given how important the position is.
