So apparently Delap goes for £30 million. So that's a £15 million profit ? In the words of a pantomime "Oh yes it is", sadly "Oh no it isn't"
City apparently have a sell on clause of 30% of the £15 million profit, so £15 million now becomes £11.5 million.
Is that really a good deal for a player that could get Chelsea 20 goals next season putting his value at the top end of the £100 million mark.
Whilst I realise City may not have sold Delap to us without this clause did MA really protect Towns interests as £11.5 million isn't going to make much of a dent in the £130 million spent.

We had little option though, it was essentially take it or leave it as he was in the door at Soton.

We didn’t stay up, but that’s not hinging on Delap or this deal. We’ve essentially had him on loan with a profit, shown the footballing world we will take on and develop prospects and not stand in their way.

Potentially you can’t put a price on that.

He’s gone, we have to win the league next season or finish second. Time to focus on that. Haggling over pennies instead of getting deals done would only cost us more. We were the cheapest squad in terms of wages etc. and in no position to negotiate with the big boys.

I’m really not sure what you’d expect us to do?

I can’t be bothered to go through all this again, but just one point - the ‘dent’ in the £130m amounts to £30m because that is a spend figure, not a net loss.

It's not bad. We signed a player for one season who scored us 12 Premier League goals, becomes our record sale, made us 10M+ in profit in 11 months and gives us a not yet disclosed % profit on his next sale from Chelsea should he make a move.

Re the £130M spent, you can essentially write off the Delap deal in its entirety on the books so it's a very good deal from an accounting point of view.

Given the vulnerability of our negotiating position what were you expecting? £10 million plus profit for essentially doing nothing seems good business. Now get your head back in the real world and remember this is a journey and progress isn't always linear. This isn't rocket science.

I’m not convinced baxter. Have a feeling people will be asking if we got a sell on clause when LD is moving into his care home.

20% is now 30%

We've now spent £130million

Inflation is brutal.

All money spent this season has suddenly been amortised in one year, rather than the length of a person's contract.

Financial rules have suddenly been rewritten.

Man oh man, it's going to be a long summer/season.

He was coming here or going to Southampton.

If they declined the deal because of this clause they are probably regretting it. They scored 26 goals all season. Delap scored 9. Now they are watching us get £10m+ profit on the deal.

I don't think anyone would deny £30m is very under priced but if that clause was the difference then it was good business.

Truly impaired.

It’s frustrating given his ceiling should be a lot higher based on the season he’s had. We have no idea how the contract negs went though. Maybe a higher buyout clause wasn’t acceptable to his side and would have scuppered the deal. Maybe they asked for it to be included. We just don’t know (or at least I don’t think we do). Without the clause you can double the fee, but we are where we are. As Confucius said - “sh*t happens”.

It was do that or don't get him. Imagine if he'd gone to Southampton and his goals had kept them up at our expense?

In the end we've still made a profit on him and it's not like we're struggling for money. Really not a biggy.
