Similar here. He's a great player, but last season proved we need more athleticism and physicality through the spine of our team. And central midfield is a place where we were bullied far too often

Wouldn't be in the championship though. Far too good for that level.

Skill wise, he'd be a cheat code in the Championship but we also need to build for what is hopefully only a 1 season stay. I still think he'd be targeted though and his fitness/robustness is not ideal.

I think he might be booted from a’hole to breakfast time in the Championship and his fitness record isn’t the best. Skilful player though and looks great running with the ball. My biggest concern is his output. One consolation goal and zero assists doesn’t inspire. Can he hurt teams? Against that, the standard in the ham and egg Championship is a mile poorer than the Premier League and his quality might tear it apart if we get back on the front foot. I’m well and truly on that fence on this. I guess I wouldn’t be averse, but nor would I wish to see a large lump of transfer budget splurged on him. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Guess the question is who would you prefer, a player like Jason Knight who knows the league inside out but would have a massive question mark over him for the step up should we get there, or Cajuste, who does ooze class but does have defensive limitations and his robustness would be under question in the Championship.

If our one season in the Prem has taught us anything, it's that it is a league of giants. Recruiting lots of skilful players who will bamboozle the opposition in the Championship will make next season fun, but as you say we need to be looking at the season after that.

The other consideration with Cajuste is who you'd partner him with.

Good question, would you be happy with a midfield of Cajuste and Downes next season?

Physically the championship wont be even comparable to the premier league. For them to boot him up in the air they would need to get near him and he would be faster, stronger and better than any midfielder at the level. If we can get the deal done it is an absolute no brainer imo. He is head and shoulders above that level. Some of the concerns on him in the prem are absolutely valid. But he would stroll the championship.

The nature of the gap between the two divisions means we're always going to be struggling to find players who are great Championship ones as well as good Prem ones. Think the way for us to bridge that is by canny recruitment and good coaching. Hopefully we're working a bit more on the former but we know we can do the latter. Basically with a player like Cajuste you probably accept there are things about his game that would be exposed a bit at a level above, but try and use the time where we'll be able to pay the matches more on our terms to improve those aspects whilst maximising the positive qualities. FWIW anyway I think the new popular consensus that he's a weak link or that he causes us major problems is a bit OTT and the extent of his 'issues' both in terms of playing style and robustness are somewhat overblown.

It would be great for next season, but Downes hasn’t really excelled in the PL. I don’t know how we (or any promotion rival) can realistically recruit players that can make the step up, last season proved the best Championship players will (mostly) struggle to make the step up.

Herein lies the issue. Cajuste would not have been with us next season had he not been injured. It's the only reason his move to Brentford fell through. Now, I'd say that if Brentford felt he was good enough (injury aside for a moment) for them in the Prem - he would be for us. The other aspect about looking further forward is - it was hard enough getting Prem quality players in when we were in the Prem - it's not any easier now. We are likely going to have to accept players coming in that may/ may not be Prem ready.

If we can get Harrison Reed, that will be one that ticks the 'proven Prem ready' box.

My conclusion from last season was that we don't need infividuals who can step up, we need a team that can step up. 11 players who know (and preferably like) each other because they've played together for at least a year.

I’m sceptical that alone is enough - Leicester and Southampton had relatively settled squads and also tanked. Plus Forest tore their squad up, stayed up, and progressed onwards. We just didn’t have the quality needed at either end of the pitch.
