For some reason I’m watching. I know he’s just scored but Kane had 9 touches of the ball before that! Playing this system against a low block is so crap to watch. I’d like to see England take a leaf out of PSGs book against the higher ranked nations, play with more width and have a go. More of this to come as well, tournaments expanded, poorer sides that will sit back but have a good level of fitness. No wonder everyone finds it so tedious.

Other than knockout games (and even then it needs to be the latter stages of a tournament) has international football ever not been boring?
It's not going to change, whoever is the manager and whoever the players are. It will only become interesting if we slip down the rankings so badly we're considered underdogs in more games, but obviously that seems unlikely. [Post edited 7 Jun 22:25]

Yes, in a word. It's systemic, and has a lot to do with the way English players seem allergic to taking a man on and getting a cross in from the by-line. I can only assume they're taught this at Premier League level, the logic being that cutting back inside supposedly leads to more goal opportunities, hence the current fad for inverted wingers. In reality, against weaker teams that sit deep, it's a road to nowhere. It's one of the unintended consequences of relying too heavily on a data driven approach.

We seem stuck in a 2010s fad. Three times at the end Gordon was one-one-one with their left back - beat him and it's an almost certain goal scoring opportunity. Three times he cut back inside and the move broke down.
Are we seriously saying Gordon is incapable of beating an Andorran left back? I can understand it might be a risk against France or Spain because losing it would invite the counter, but even if he fails to beat him (which he really shouldn't nine times out of ten), are we seriously that scared of the Andorran counter? He took us further than a lot of his predecessors (with better talent and very favorable tournament draws) but fell short tactically when it mattered and was too slow to make changes. How we didn’t win against that aging Italian side on home turf I’ll never know. Clearly a very decent bloke and representative of his country though. Tuchel thus far does not excite me. | | | |
