If McKenna goes.... 10:19 - Jun 10 with 10704 viewsitfcjoe

Just looking at manager markets for Brentford, Leicester and Boro to see who is seen as available and of the right sort of level if McKenna does end up poached.

Some names, in no particular order

Danny Rohl
Michael Carrick
Steven Gerrard
Sean Dyche
Steve Cooper
Gary O'Neil
Rob Edwards
Marti Cifuentes
Liam Rosenior
Edin Terzic
Ralph Hassenhutl

Do you think this misses anyone? I could easily totally rule a few of them out for one reason or another, but if going with anyone with a track record [and season so important you'd have to]. not sure who else would be on any list

Id have thought Lampard might make his way on to the list purely for his Prem experience and he has done well at Cov albeit with a very good squad at the level.

Then the backroom coaches who would be complete novices managerially. Anthony Barry for example. I know a few of us on here like the idea of Carlos Cuesta. Ashton doesn't strike me as someone who would be worried about making an appointment like that.

From your list there. Rohl, Carrick and Rosenior are the stands outs. Not moved by too many of the others. Rob Edwards seemed to be a favoured name last summer right ? That would be one I am not keen on at all.

Think I'd be happy with either
Rohl
Cifuentes
Rosenior
Believe Rohl and Rosenior were sounded out last season if McK was to leave.

If the timings had been slightly different – ie a year ago – I sense we'd have gone quite strongly for Rob Edwards. Not sure we would now in the event of a vacancy but it's correct that he's on your list. Suspect we'd go for a no-dramas-just-get-us-back-up type this year, but let's hope we don't have to find out.

Rohl seems the standout candidate by a distance to me. Unless we would look overseas for someone, but feels unlikely.

If KM goes Brentford then surely Justin Cochrane would be looking elsewhere?

He's assistant manager to Tuchel with the England set up. I doubt he will be looking to move on from that role seeing as they're likely only to stay for the world cup.

Southgate?

Not sure if he's made any comments on his next steps, and it's pretty difficult to gauge his level in domestic football. But would have thought he'd be on the markets for some of those jobs at least

Think Rohl has done an excellent job at Wednesday. They looked completely gone in 2023/24 and he kept them up by achieving not far off top 6 form. Last season they flirted briefly with the play offs but ended up comfortably in mid table. When you look at the squad he's working with and the absolute bin fire going on around him under Chasniri, that's some impressive work.

Who knows, we’re a pretty attractive opportunity that hopefully won’t come up again in a few years!

Depends on if he wants to manage, but he’d be right up there for me and one of the closest matches to McKenna we could get. As you said, he might have zero interest in leaving the England set up but I’d hope we’d sound him out

Rohl stands out if looking at results and experience in the championship. I'm assuming he has Wednesday playing decent football?

Has to be Danny Rohl for me ... hopefully use his links to RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich to some use as well and get some of the next upcoming stars in on loan.

Intense.

His teams win the ball back and are expected to flood forward. He loves wingers and he loves to attack with pace. Now the issue is at times, his players have not been good enough to do what he wants and that's left them looking very vulnerable at the back. So some people would say that's naïve, some would say that is brave.

His experience as a coach is superb. Germany national team, Bayern Munich, Leipzig, Southampton (when they were good) so no issues there. He has also had appalling circumstances to work under. Chansiri is a maniac so just keeping that club afloat is impressive.

As a person he seems like a good communicator, very intelligent, speaks good English and Wednesday fans love him.

So Certainly ticks a lot of boxes and has absolutely earnt is shot at a club challenging for promotion.

Depends on the alternative.

Cooper I don't think there could be many complaints. Seems to cover a few bases, works with young players as well.

Names like O'Neil, Edwards, Gerrard (heaven forbid). I think you are better off taking a risk.

This article gives a good overview of his career but it’s his attention to detail which really reminds me of McKenna. He’s a world class coach having worked with some of the best players in the world and in some of the best clubs and environments in the world, and to me that’s what we need. Very similar story to McKenna as well with his injury hit career

He tried to go toe to toe with us at PR last year and got spanked 6-0.

With a better set of players he may flourish. Certainly the stand out of the names mentioned if the worst happens.
