The latest great Ipswich side is now beginning to be dismantled. 16:40 - Jun 14 with 2798 viewsTractorFrog

First Massimo Luongo, now Cameron Burgess leaves the club. Burgess turned out to be an unexpectedly brilliant signing, considering how badly his first season here went. He may not have got his chance at all if not for George Edmundson's ankle injury. Then he forced Edmundson out of the team on merit in the league one promotion season, was crucial to the championship promotion, and arguably stepped up to the Premier League better than any other of the league one eleven. I think he's better than Jacob Greaves and I think we will regret consistently not playing him last season, that's got to be a factor in not signing a new contract.

Burgess will be best remembered for never losing a defensive header, very rarely allowing his lack of pace to be a problem due to good positioning, a very accurate long ball out to Leif Davis that started many attacks, and of course that crucial goal against Coventry at the end of the championship promotion season. I would say he was our most consistent defender across the two promotions, and can't think of any significant mistakes at all.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

I am not certain "great" is the correct adjective. Certainly successful and it is sad to see it begin to split apart but it is clear we need to improve on what was a highly successful League 1 and Championship side.

I wonder if Morsy and Broadhead will go this summer too. Davis and Hutchinson could. Hladky and Edmundson already did.

A lot of experience gone, something we desperately needed last season.

I suspect Morsy will be gradually phased out over the course if this season if Humpreys(for example) shows any sign of kicking on this season.

It’s sad to see people go, but as a silver lining part of me is pleased we’re also not sentimental. It’s a ruthless game and we need to stick to our plan and look to continually improve. Not that Cam obviously couldn't have done a job next year. He very clearly could. Maybe this gives someone else a chance to develop and improve us (hopefully!).

Disappointed to see Burgess leave but can’t blame him. Yes some of the “band of brothers” are being replaced now. Hopefully it’ll be evolution and not revolution and many of our most successful side in years will remain. We need Baggott to stay clear of injuries and prove to be an able left footed deputy to Greaves. He looked decent on his few appearances for us, but his fitness let him down on his loan move.

What do people expect though? We just sit still with what we’ve got and hope we have another season like 23/24?

If we’re serious about keeping McKenna here, then he will want to progress us even further than he has already, and that will mean making tough calls on those players that gave us an unbelievable 2 seasons.

Shame to see them go, of course, but a chance to recruit even better players and leave us in a better position should we get promoted again.

Big big summer ahead though.

“What do people expect though?“

1. Champagne-drenched hospitality
2. A share of the WAGs
3. And for the icing on the cake, a rare, lesser-spotted, free Norwich away ticket

That must be reasonable?

Yes I agree , there is always a tinge of sadness when a good servant moves on but myself I feel we need one or two new faces to liven up the squad .

True but still worth giving Burgess the accolades of being part of such a special and successful team.

We need to look back on what that side achieved as a 1 in 200 or greater chance event, therefore we are not going to achieve the same by using the same players. Can was great. Our defence was good enough in the champ not great. It certainly wasn’t good enough in the prem. Cam was a great guy and has been on the journey, we will be forever grateful for the memories made. Now is a good time to reimagine who we are, what we want to be, and go build it.

I seem to remember us being shorter than 10-1 to win promotion at the start of 2023/24 so I don't think it's very accurate to say it was a 1 in 200 or greater achievement. It really wasn't. We built a Championship squad in League 1 and added a bit more quality to it after promotion. What we achieved was incredible, and the style we did it in especially, but let's not over-egg it.

Spot on, not sure why his name keeps popping up. We all love it when one of our own makes it. But realistically like you said, he will he nowhere near the side.

Fairytale journey.

Feels as though that period has come to its conclusion now though.

The next stage I would suspect is to build a team that can not only take us to the PL, but can establish us in the PL.

Big big summer, lots of work to do.

Greaves was prone to the odd mistake, but I did see a decent player in him. Playing against Premier League class forwards was a big step forward.
With Burgess I would say maybe we offered him a years contract and he wanted three that he has got with Swansea.
Whilst it is always a pity to see players go that has happened throughout the existence of football. Some go for personal reasons, some for more money and sadly some because they no longer have a part to play in the future of a club.
Of course in a majority of cases we wish them well.

Am sure Greaves will turn out to be a better all-round player and has youth on his side.

A 3 year contract and a signing on fee will be the biggest move of Burgess’ career.

i think the style rather than the promotion is the notable thing.

to finish on 96 points, 6 and 9 points clear of freshly relegated sides having good seasons is exceptional.

the 10-1 was probably envisioning a sunderland-style promotion, playoffs, then edging past a better side in a one-off game
