Is Burnley not a bit of a sideways step? 17:16 - Jun 26 with 1525 viewsTresBonne

I get why he wants to play in the PL and good on him, but based on the last few seasons, there's a pretty decent chance that we end up swapping places with Burnley and Axel finds himself in the same situation next summer.

Also, I can't imagine they would be offering a better/longer deal or paying more money than we are.

I get it, I just thought as someone who has had a bit of a nomadic career so far, he would fancy settling down in the Suffolk countryside and likely being back in the PL next season - same as O Shea.

Think all of what you say is reasonable but if his family are in NW then understandable why he would head back there

Always one game away from being injured. We move on, no surprises here, he's the best we had in that position but a chance for a new recruit, hopefully one who can play 46 games a season.

It's a massive upwards step – if a PL offer is there then why gamble on us making it safely through a tempestuous Championship.

Moving to the PL isn't a sideways step

If he wants to play at that level, which he clearly does, then his best bet is to move to a club in that league, not stay at one that hopes to be there next season

If he has a good season in the PL, and even if Burnley are relegated, there’s a chance that an established PL team will try and sign him - will be relatively cheap and a good age.

Can see why he would like to go to Burnley.

Really, really sorry to see him go.

But I don’t think it can be looked at as a sideways step. They are ahead of us on the upward curve and may just be in a position to stay up this season. We’re a couple of seasons, at least, away from that.

In no possible world is that a sideways step.

Suffolk isn’t for everyone. I was golfing last week at Dunston Hall near Norwich (noticed one or two ITFC hats and golf towels - are we taking over?) and took my mate and we stayed over at the Suffolk house. Showed him around the area since he didn’t know it, nosebag at the Maybush, few beers overlooking the Deben. He seemed happy enough. Good time at the golf resort too.

Notably when we returned, as we got over the Dartford Bridge back into Kent, he said ‘aaah home. Never feel right anywhere else’.

Anyhow, I’m sure there are loads of nice places in the Burnley area - it’s not an area I know.

I’m sure location is a big attraction for him, Burnley are Premier League now, we aren’t I wouldn’t call it a sideways step.

What slightly puzzles me though is that, if hes prepared to sign a new contract with Burnley as a newly promoted PL club, what was the background to ITFC not doing the same thing in the same circumstances a year ago?
It would likely have given him a signing on fee, a pay rise and a bit of security too.

Edit- I had assumed he had chosen to only extend by a year last year, but perhaps it was our decision. Especially as it seems that Burnley have also only offered him one year. That changes the narrative of this quite a bit, as suggests we are aware he might not be fully fit for all of next year too.

I stayed at Dunston Hall not so long ago.
Never heard so many 'London' accents. Like everyone there.
I don't know where anyone was from but it was very odd.
I lived in London for 25 years so I know what Londoners sound like.

Ipswich isn't for everyone. Burnley are a premier club so absolutely a step up. We will do well to make it out of the championship.

One step forward to be likely back at square one in a year's time. Hopefully we'll go the other way.

Well our golf society group of 12 all are from the south, Kent, London so you’d have heard London accents aplenty last week! Apart from myself of course - who doesn’t really have an accent.

It’s a smashing venue for a golf break and the organiser got a good deal on it. Something like £160 each for two rounds of golf, overnight stay, dinner and brekkie. What’s not to like? There are plenty of good deals out there - this week it was a similar price for the same at Dale Hill Golf Club and Spa near Ticehurst in Kent (in the Weald - beautiful area).

Only a 1 year contract, so if Burnley get relegated and we go back up, he can rejoin, if we want him.
