Haha. Yeah, I’ve never heard the like before (much). I thought it was crass, but what a complete waste of police time. Glastonbury can police this themselves. If they thought he was out of order, just don’t let him back. Meanwhile the killing of people at aid stations in Gaza continues and there’s tumbleweed on the front pages. Russia launched its largest strike on Ukraine over the weekend - again, no outrage. [Post edited 30 Jun 18:09]

Yes, because music, politics and human rights have never been intrinsically joined for hundreds of years.

I was so angry when RATM suddenly went political the other year over Trump.

I don’t know if you have noticed but protest songs about politics, race , class have been a thing for quite a number of years now. Some popular combos like the Beatles, Bob Dylan have even engaged in it. [Post edited 30 Jun 18:50]

I just heard Bob Dylan’s Masters of War, how has that man escaped jail the past 60 years?! “I hope that you die, and your death will come soon” - vile incitement to violence.

It is a very fine song, but is a personal protest song and is hardly inciting people. It is possibly becoming a fine line between expressing personal views and upsetting the authorities.

Interesting quote from the BBC article: "Avon and Somerset Police also confirmed the criminal investigation would assess Kneecap's Glastonbury performance." Sounds suspiciously as if there haven't been any specific complaints about Kneecap, but that the local plod either fancy, or have been instructed to undertake a fishing expedition.

Strike a light, Dylan was the original protest singer in modern music. He set the template. He doesn't engage lightly in it. Certainly the Beatles should not be in the same sentence, though they had a good go against Labour's high tax regime of the 60's in the song Taxman

Err, I think Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Huddie Leadbetter may have been around a few months before Dylan became popular...

I take issue with that because a) I’m sure quite a lot of people gasped watching the clip of Bob Vylan (and I would argue that he has deliberately upped the rhetoric in order to garner such a reaction) and b) I’m not sure it’s fair to say that it was just mindless following of the crowd that made people anti-IDF, they’ve been doing some pretty awful things that most people are aware of. I’m not saying that calling for death to anyone hasn’t crossed a line but I do find the handwringing overthought and pointless.

Howard Jacobson is often worth a read (or before the demise of 'A Point Of View' a listen) but that doesn't mean he is always right. In this article he states 'What makes the play art as opposed to propaganda is its dramatic form' he is not acknowledging Bob Vylan as art, in other words he doesn't 'get' Bob Vylan - if he did then he would extend the charity he gives to Roald Dahl to Bobby. For the same reason he doesn't go to football matches ? Because he see one aspect of crowd behaviour he extends it to the whole crowd ? Yet another aspect of this controversy that I have yet to see teased out is whether 'Death To The IDF' means individual Israeli soldiers or the concept of an extreme military force, or the right of Israel to defend itself. If against the concept or right then Bobby might open himself up to the same degree of ridicule that George Bush garnered for a war on terror, you can't defeat an idea with attempts at extermination.

Entirely commonplace in public discourse to wish for the destruction of foreign military forces, isn't it? You could cite pretty much any newspaper headline after the IDF attacks on Iran as an example. Not sure what legal principle would make "Death to the IDF" any more criminal than "Death to Hamas" or "Death to the Iranian regime" [Post edited 1 Jul 9:38]

Art is political. Doesn't have to have a big P, this does, but it's always been and always will be. You are free to look at or listen to other art.
