What is going on with the weather then? 20:17 - Jun 30 with 4249 viewsDubtractor

Multiple days with the temperature over 30 degrees in June.

Barely any rain in 3 months - all the streams near me are bone dry.

This isn't normal at all!

My lawn has been mostly dead for weeks now, the veg patch only surviving as I'm watering it 2 or 3 times a week.

I can only assume farmers are having real concerns about the crops they are going to get this year too.

As far as I can see there has been minimal (if any) coverage of how weird the weather has been.

Anyone else bothered by this sort of thing?

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Well herein lies the problem.

Most people, myself included, don't react well to being told by those in charge that we can't have nice things, or that we have to pay a little more for them. 5p for your Tesco shopping bag quickly becomes 30p. Fields that might have previously been used to grow food become solar or windfarms, food becomes scarcer. It's ok they say, we can eat bugs. No thanks.
All seems to put the burden on the poorer masses whilst the wealthy and those that make the rules can continue living as they always have - eating their steaks on the private jet. The proposed solution always seems to be tied in with more socialism, more authoritarianism. I'm not going to vote for that.

So maybe we are fooked, or at least we are left hoping science, engineering and private enterprise can come up with more convenient solutions. Maybe whatever action we take at this point, the planet will do what it's gonna do.

Nothing is stopping you from keeping a spare plastic bag or two in the car, even stuffed into your back pocket, so as to avoid the charge on a plastic bag at the supermarket. In fact that is the whole point, to cut down on their use and not to increase the takings of Tesco to our own detriment.

It’s certainly becoming more difficult. I would imagine Bankster is finding the same too.
For example, and this is just one of several I could give, my season for planting native hedges, orchards and trees bare rooted would always start the first week of November through until the first week of April. In more recent years, the plants are still producing new growth, are fully leafed and not dormant. Plantings have been delayed by a month or more and due to much warmer spring conditions, the latest I’ll comfortably be happy to plant them is mid March so in effect losing up to six weeks. You then have the problem of keeping them alive during the first growing year so that is also impacting on things due to our lack of regular rainfall.
Gardening will have to adapt as I see it going forward using more drought tolerant plants. I’m not a doom merchant and there will be ways and means that become available, plant breeding etc but it’s most definitely real and here to stay.

Delayed all my sowing & planting till second half of May this year, as it would have taken a huge amount of water resources to get the soil that was bone dry down to a depth of at least 45cm/18 inches in all the raised beds & tubs, up to sufficient moisture levels; and didn't want to then be watering every day either.

As a neighbour said, used to be able to leave veg to get watered by mother nature, but these days we have to water them ourselves at least every other day, if not more, however much mulch you've applied.

Agree, but BtB has a point in that it's the CEOs of global oil/gas corps etc, endorsed by politicians, many of whom have shares and/or other vested interests in those, who are making the major decisions that benefit themselves/their families* financially, whilst hastening climate change in the process.

*Have never undserstood this mindset, as surely even they can see that their grandkids aren't going to be able to eat or breathe gold bars. Perhaps they're just literally terminally stupid/greedy.

I agree. I’m putting a small pond in place of my modest vegetable patch in winter as it’s been a disaster for germinating the seeds this year. It’s not worth the effort and extra expense any more but I’m hoping to attract a bit more wildlife into the garden by doing so.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

So, every spring you could chuck a load of soil/compost into the pond until the right consistency for sowing & planting veg is achieved?

Helluva job shovelling it all out again in October though 😂

More than half of the fossil fuels extracted each year are from state run energy companies - so governments are at least as culpable as the private sector. However, the demand for oil and gas hasn’t gone away, so we need to find alternatives. Air travel and petrochemicals will continue to fuel (pun intended) demand. How do you lower airline emissions equitably - if it’s a carbon tax, the well off will continue to pay it and it will be a tax on being poor (see also the congestion charge in London). We’ll go back to a communist type system where only the privileged elite are able to have personal transport or fly. There aren’t any easy answers.

Just for balance, I live in West Cornwall, we have not had a day over 24c this year so far and half the year now gone, and the last two so called heatwaves the South East has had have not materialised this far west, in fact most days have been cloudy with Cornish mizzle.

I do feel sorry for the folks zooming down the M5 to the beaches thinking they are going to get these end of the world heatwaves with a nice paddle in the sea and a 99.

Saying that still July and August to go, so may get a sniff of one of these things at some point for a day or two, then back to 15c and below temps for 360 days of the year.

Arrived in Perranporth yesterday at midday, it was a glorious afternoon after the cloud cleared, probably the best weather we’ve ever experienced down here. A touch of the red shoulders this morning.

We always expect it to be a bit cooler and cloudier down here compared to back home when the weather is nice but as long as it’s dry and warm we don’t mind - like today!

It was high 30s low 40s a couple of years ago wasn’t it? 2021 or 2022? I remember going outside and it feeling like an oven and being on the tube and wondering how I was still alive, but this year so far at least I haven’t felt the heat all that much, it’s not had any real effect on my comfort or sleep.

Literally 2022 it was this hot. I escaped to Scotland and it was a relief to be in 21 degrees all week.

So you're looking at a 3/4 year event of a hot dry summer.

Then possibly more frequently as everyone just ambles on with flights, ICE cars and China and India churn out emissions while USA chucks out green policy

It also seems to be wrong - according to Wikipedia it's not even in the top 10 hottest days and wasn't even the hottest day on record at the time.

Instead, half of the 10 hottest days since records began have been in the past 6 years, including 4 of the top 5.

Rank Temperature Date Place(s)
1* 40.3 °C (104.5 °F) 19 July 2022 Coningsby, Lincolnshire
2* 38.7 °C (101.7 °F) 25 July 2019 Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
3* 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) 10 August 2003 Faversham, Kent
4 38.2 °C (100.8 °F) 18 July 2022 Pitsford, Northamptonshire[6]
5 37.8 °C (100.0 °F) 31 July 2020 Heathrow, Greater London

I hate to be a pedant but the original post was talking about the hottest recorded day in June. And that was indeed in 1976. Not that a single day in a given month means anything in terms of long term climate change of course. You’re right in terms of hottest days in any month.

Think really the situation we are in is a product of both elites and ordinary folk.

The industries producing carbon emissions pour quantities of money into lobbying and propaganda that lets them keep doing what they're doing.

But they know it's going to fall on fertile ground because there's always going to a huge constituency for the message "Why should you have to change the way you live and give up some of the things you enjoy?"

I running easier in the heat but do throw in say 2 minutes at 5k pace to really try to briefly suffer. Heat training is meant to be amazing for cardiovascular efficiency.

We played a pre-season game in 38 degree heat at 5pm a few months back. Didn't feel massively different. Bit slower but it's o35s so not exactly high tempo anyway.

My point is, you'll get used to it in the same way that we have. The human body's amazing.

I am down to a butt and a half now,I am however taking fresh tap water to my birdbaths I have four of those, and one small bowl of water for my hedgehog and squirrel that frequent my garden.

There are limits to what the human body can endure though, adaptation includes holding back when dangerous weather approaches. I mean you wouldn't carry on running if the path led into a wildfire, would you ?

And by the same token, if lifestyles made wildfires more frequent and solutions were apparent then it would be common sense to advocate them, wouldn't it ?

Absolutely. Far too many of us cling on to the self-serving, self-deluding "I couldn't do anything about it" internal dialogue, when actually we are the only entities who could have done something about it. We still could to some extent, but will we ever take responsibility, or will we just leave it to our kids to suffer with?

Just come back from a few days in Malaga where it was a relatively pleasant 33 degrees but didn't go ahead with a trip to Cordoba where it was 43 degrees.

More generally, the Iberian peninsular has been very hot in June. This from the Guardian.

"The Spanish state meteorological agency, Aemet, said in a social media update that “June 2025 smashed records” when it came to high temperature, with an average temperature of 23.6C, 0.8C above the previous hottest June in 2017.

The monthly average was also 3.5C higher than the average over the period from 1991 to 2020, it said.

The agency’s comments come just days after Spain’s highest ever June temperature of 46C was recorded in the Huelva province of Andalucía.

In Portugal, temperatures hit 46.6C in Mora, a town in the Évora district, in recent days, making it the highest June temperature ever recorded in the country, according to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere."

One man's pedantry is another man's accuracy!

But I think the overall message still applies. 1976 was an anomaly that has stuck in everyone's mind over a certain age. Same with the Michael Fish hurricane in 1987. But today these sorts of weather events are taking place every 3-4 years rather than every 50.

Though I would say part of the reason the propaganda against environmentalism works is because at the other end of someone doing something frivolous is usually somebody making a living.

Even "It's not sustainable to fly loads" is a tough argument to make to some people but "we need to do this even though a massive reduction in flying and tourism would cost 100,000s of jobs worldwide" is an even harder one to make.

It's why it's so infuriating that as societies we've continued to divert capital into new carbon-emitting industries - AI, the mass production of SUVs is also relatively recent. Because once you've done that, you've got 100,000s of people dependent economically on that activity continuing and it becomes impossible to unpick.
