Mills will always be No1, but did Morsy do enough to sneak past Holland into No2 spot? For me yes.

I don't know enough about Nelson or Billy Baxter to judge them.

No, Holland was an excellent player in the Premier league. Sam had two promotions with us and was a great leader. But as a player he was poor and quite ineffective in the top flight.

Agreed, but Sam was still a good leader despite not being the player Matty was for us. I bet there’s not a huge amount between them in terms of leadership. Sam was possibly more vocal on the pitch, although both seemed to be well respected by the players. But then in terms of pure leadership off the pitch, Chambo stands out as good as anyone. The lengths he went to to settle new players were ridiculous.

Jim had a spell of a few years of course, very fiery and vocal. He probably scared players into being better lol. De Vos was good - he led by example. A rock of a player and character. We’ve had some good ones.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Probably fair to say the leadership style of Holland and Morsy differed quite a bit. Holland was very much a lead by example captain. He was the fit high work rate footballer. Morsy more of enforcer type of player, a hard man who pushed and lifted the others up to the required level.

What about Sir Humphrey Flowerdew, who captained Town to the title in the 1934/5 season when they briefly merged with Hartest Rovers?

It is all very well you taking the mick out of what you dont understand but my Dad always believed in Tommy Parker and Andy Nelson.

Neither of us were so impressed with Baxter and I could never forgive him laying a punch on Bobby.
Micky Mills was a good solid player but not so inspirational.

As ever these questions come down to personal choices and a definitive answer will never be agreed on.

Interesting question. Baxter, Mills, Butcher, Linighan, Williams, Holland, Magilton, De Vos, Chambers, Morsy are the ones that leap to mind, though there were others of course. I don’t remember Baxter much though know all about him. I do the rest.

There is a bit of difference between football ability and captaincy and the role of the captain is far less important than say cricket. Mills captained a team of great players so in that sense his job was mostly choosing which end and shaking hands. At the other end of the scale, Chambers was captaining the team at a club rotten to the core and inexorably declining.

For me, the best Captains I’ve seen at the club are Mills, Holland and Morsy. Mills for longevity, living and breathing the club and the sheer fact he was there during the club’s greatest period. Holland because he was kind of the heartbeat of the club in that period and represented it well.

Morsy for much the same reason as Matt. Now it may well be because it’s recent but his influence on the team on the pitch cannot be underestimated. You could see who was captain and who was driving the team and not just because he did the coin toss. So for me, while Matt was a better footballer, Sam was marginally a better captain. So Mills, Morsy, Holland in that order.

We’ve had some good ones over the years. Long forgotten people like Linighan who was not the best player ever but led the team well, albeit with a threat of brooding violence. De Vos? Great character and a good un. Magilton? Bit too much threat and noise for him to be the greatest captain and I felt his strength lay in tearing up the opposition. Smashing player.

So many to choose from. Who can forget Sidney Norman Webster AFC who captained the team 1928-1930 the year after he won the 1927 Schneider Trophy Race, flying a Supermarine S.5. No other club captain anywhere has done that!

I don't think so.

He was part of the expected league 1 promotion team
Did superb when we got promoted
Lead to team to relegation year after ( sounds awful but that's factually correct) don't mean it to sound that harsh. There's also the armband issue which can't be forgotten.

A great captain. Good footballer and exactly what we needed during the beginning of the project tho.

Armband issue ffs.

Wasn’t an issue.

I think it depends on what era you were born in. Many won't have seen the likes of Baxter or Mills. I had the privilege of seeing the great teams of the late seventies, early eighties and also teams involving the likes of Baxter , Hancock, Broadfoot, Crawford etc.
So Mills for me as Captain fantastic. Both a great leader and an excellent footballer.

Or what about our post war captain Tommy Lancaster. Lost his right leg in a bombing raid over Berlin but could still get around the pitch quicker than most. Scored 112 goals in 345 appearances for town. Many say he'd have scored more if it wasn't for the amputation as he wasn't a natural left footed player.
