There are smarter ways to give them the rise without actually increasing their pay (such that your average football messageboard contributor would find it hard to argue against).

Given that doctors come out of training with a debt, interest-bearing, of over 100k [like, paying for their own apprenticeship], an interest moratorium would make some difference.

But that doesn't quite solve it of course. We need to lock them in as qualified docs can and do earn much, much more in other countries.

So, in addition to the interest moratorium (5% value?) reduce that 100k debt by 10k each year that the doc continues to work for the NHS. Paying 10k out of salary would be net of 40% tax, so would take around 16k a year out of 100k of salary.

This gives no pay rise, locks then in up to a decade, and is worth over 20% to them.

The problem a payment in kind solution involving student loans and accomodation is that there are many resident Dr's who trained before the student kian scheme started so dont have the debt.

Something that somehow we need to address is the massively better work/life bakance and superior pay for Drs in places like Australia and NZ.
Ive no idea how they pay for it, but pay and conditions over there are vastly superior to the UK and many take the option of taking 5 yrs over there and getting set up for life. And really, who can blame them given how broken, and seemingly unfixable the NHS is.

Oh, and dear in mind that the gov have done nothing, nada, zilch, to move towards the other primises that were made to the Res Dr's as part of the last settlement.

Lastly, lets not forget these Res Dr's with be spending up 15yrs, studying for exams every year for nearly all all that time in order to give us the best help we need when we need it. Just for context, my son is in A&E and critical care, making life and death judgements on people every single hour of every day.

Cool. Did you also know that your employer would only give you below inflation pay increases for the next 15 years too?

Or that the loans you had to take out would be going up by higher interest rates?

I will have the interview, listen to what the pay and work structure is, thank them when I’m hired and weeks later say ‘I’m underpaid and overworked’
But hey every employee says the same!!!!!

When I accepted my job, I knew the salary.

Did you also accept 15 years of it falling behind the rate of inflation, too?

Everyone is entitled to strike for better pay. One thing I’m against is them claiming overtime for the time they have to spend catching up because they have been on strike. Bit of a p*ss take. If you strike you shouldn’t get paid or be able to claim overtime in those circumstances.

Should have an 'i' instead of an 'e' in your username, Chris.

Think the nursing union is voting for strike action as we speak, and rightly so they got even less than the doctors in real terms not an increase at all and certainly didn’t get 22% last year with the same wages freezes under the previous mob for 17 years but on far less wages.

Could be regionally. Nothing has dropped through the door from the RCN for Mrs Chelters. Unless its someone like Unison of course?

Unions have always shown support for other causes that they see just. This is hardly something new or a bandwagon they're jumping on.

What's wrong with showing solidarity with Palestine?

Don't worry mate, I'm confident that you don't have the knowledge and skills to become a doctor, so it'll never happen to you.

Team Be Kind turning out to show support for genocidists is massively on-brand, to be fair.

whenever they use the nhs, they bring a questionnaire asking if each member of staff has anti-genocidal viewpoints and demand to see a more hateful doctor/nurse if they fail to meet their criteria!

Genuinely wonder what their views on the unions supporting the anti-apartheid movement would have been at that time

Think they're either showing themselves up as being naive to think unions don't have a history of getting involved in other political movements, or even worse are showing their true colours regarding Palestine
