Can’t say I mind it too much; establishment cover up and delays over Hillsborough deserves a reaction , and what scousers see as the managed decline of the city under Thatcher just adds fuel to the fire.

I think you will find Liverpool has had plenty of time to improve since Thatcher. Bit like this constant whining by the Labour party about the state the economy which was left by the Tories. They have been in for over a year and the black hole they whinge about of £22 billion is now £50 billion. Everybody else's fault except theirs. A bad worker always blames his tools and there's plenty of them in this government.

That doesn't change the whole history of Hillsborough, nor the fact that nothing has changed. South Yorkshire Police's recent shredding of Orgreave files proves that.

You'd think they were the only city to ever go through an economic slump or the only people to ever suffer an injustice at the hands of the police.

No excuse for still booing your own anthem in 2025.

Right, what the hell has a PM 5 decades ago got to do with booing your own national anthem in 2025? It’s so utterly pathetic.

It’s also new and trendy for them to do it even though more time has passed for what they claim it’s all about. They didn’t do it in cup finals in the 90s etc. In fact even when they played in Europe (before they got everyone banned) you can see loads of union Jacks in their end.

It’s just this new fashionable victim mentality from that fanbase.

Tourist club now anyway, that literally have to pump in volume for YNWA at Anfield.

Is that akin to when they started playing Singing the Blues recording at PR instead of letting it start organically?

Still irks me slightly that quite a few Town fans started belting out YNWA towards the end of the PO Final against Barnsley. Not because of an anti Scousers agenda though, I'd have been equaĺly aghast if they'd started singing I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles or On The Ball City, it was just odd.

Having just come back from a few days there, I won't hear a word against Scousers, especially the Blue Nose variety.

Interestingly, it's not just a Liverpool FC thing, but extends to the whole of Merseyside.

Yep they absolutely played into Tory hands, complete scumbags. It’s a bit baffling the Tories loaning on this thread think that central government, funding etc is equal towards cities and people in this country though.

There’s clear evidence of a north south divide being social and economic. Denying Liverpool wasn’t held back compared to other places is just baffling in this day and age.

Fwiw I'm not sure why the club ever did that, it wasn't a thing fans were demanding, asked for or even wanted and certainly not a version sung like an entry into SGRs country nights playlist

It wasn't even a song that the fans sang that much, just when it spontaneously was sung lots could join in because the lyrics were fairly simple and it went on for a while

They could just have easily gone for those were the days my friend, or Shampoo...oh oh your in trouble Ipswich came along and we burst your bubble...that was surprisingly popular at the time

....a "thing", but Hatton and his cohorts made it far worse by spunking £30m that wasn't theirs in the 80's.

It put the City into debt, stalled regeneration in the 90's and cost thousands of jobs. They didn't pay it off till the turn of the century.

I'm of the view that giving corrupt people power, whatever their political persuasion, isn't particularly sensible!

Why am I amazed?

Because it shows a bit of critical thinking rather than just blindly singing the anthem without actually thinking about what those in power have done to the people in your city. As others have pointed out, there's the policy of managed decline under Thatcher, the Hillsborough cover up and the media's take on the Liverpool fans that day, then there's also a strong Irish and immigrant population as well.

There's plenty of reasons why people might not hail "King and Country". It's just they're the only ones to express it as a collective community

It was a universal football tune for a long while, always sung at the Fa Cup final and by any clubs fans I mean its a song from a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, they only started singing it at Liverpool because Gerry & the Pacemakers made a cover record of it and it topped the chart and Bill Shankly was a big fan of it

Who knows, if Bill had been a Beatles fan, or Paul hadnt said he supported Everton they'd be singing Hey Jude all the time instead

But it's not a song specifically about Liverpool or has any real lyrical meaning for the city other than the fact they adopted it after a local band got it to number 1 in the hit parade.
