So many memories of this place on 22:15 - Oct 10 with 2326 views | Swansea_Blue | The haze in old photos always fascinates me. I can’t remember whether we used to walk around enveloped in smog, or just that the traditional photo tech used to produce that look. I’m guessing the latter. All my photos from the 70s and early 80s have that atmospheric look.

Air pollution was bad, soot mainly from burning coke, and leaded petrol. When it rained the footpaths were covered with wet soot it made everything look grey. I loved the north stand. My first game in 1968 it was the last game in div.2. I think it was 1-1 against Blackpool or Blackburn. We won promotion that day. Ray Crawford may have played his last game for us as well that day. I can't comment on the noise as I emigrated to Australia in 1982 so have never experienced the latest north/churchmans ends to compare ity. I have however noticed the away support is much improved since I left.

To be fair coke is still an issue around the NS but for totally different reasons.

So many memories of this place on 06:23 - Oct 11 with 1961 views | Churchman | I had an ST for North Stand in its last year 2000/2001 - GBs 5th place Premier League season. What a season, what an atmosphere, what a racket, what an experience! Lucky me. Yes, it was the best place to watch football, despite my user name. Currently I have about as good a view as you can get in the West Stand, but there’s nothing quite like being behind the goal, close enough to hear the ‘shush’ of the ball hitting the net, but high enough to see the game. Looking at the picture, I notice the sign on the right refers to the ‘Pioneer Terrace’ so I’m guessing it was taken some time in the 1980s. [Post edited 11 Oct 10:51]

My first season in the North Stand was 68/69 in the First Division and Ray Crawford was definitely still playing for us. I certainly don't recall those days being quite as grey as you, but I guess compared to Australia......... Those European nights, all the FA cup replays, even the Texaco Cup ties were great times in the North Stand. I couldn't have considered watching from anywhere else for ages but I've been a season ticket holder in Churchmans for seven or eight years now. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

There's an unwritten law that one fan must be sacrificed at each game to appease the wrathful and fickle football gods. That fan is identified by the upside-down scarf, as shown in that photo; they just mysteriously disappear five minutes before the final whistle, last seen shuffling toward the exit in a fog of Bovril and pie steam.

Mid 80s would've been my guess. I can see the old 'Drill Hall' in the background too. I can remember working there on some work training placement early 90s.

So many memories of this place on 11:27 - Oct 11 with 1504 views | OldFart71 | Started going to PR and standing in the North Stand about half way up in the 1950's. Went through what is now viewed as the bad pjd days where there was a bit of bovver and the stand was segregated to keep fans apart as the away fans had the right hand side and Town fans had the left. I remember games which were sell outs and fans would be shepherded around the perimeter of the ground. A chap who used to sell the Evening Star used to wear a flat cap sort of on one side. His name was Dieter Ager from Mendlesham. The old chicken run, replaced by the Cobbold and opened in 1970-71 season went to Foxhall stadium. Churchmans had wooden sleepers for steps. Possibly replaced after the Bradford fire. Great memories especially 78 and the Cup final. Also the game against Leeds Utd when the ground had just over 38,000 in it. Lets hope there are more glory days to come. The old ground looks superb now thanks mainly to Gamechanger & Co. I look forward to further expansion when the Cobbold gets replaced. COYB.

The sign mentions “member only” when there was a membership scheme. I would put that as late 1980s until 1990.

So many memories of this place on 13:34 - Oct 11 with 1286 views | GlasgowBlue | I have a confession. In 40 years of supporting Ipswich Town I have never watched a game from the North Stand. The vast majority have been from the West Stand (although as a kid a few of us would stand at the fence that separate the West stand from the North and abuse the away fans who weren't hard enough to stand closer to our boys in the North) seen one game from the Cobbald (5-1 defeat of West Ham) and just one from the Churchmans (UEFA Cup final first leg against AZ '67). edit. Ignore above. Watched us draw 1-1 with Aberdeen in the Uefa Cup 1981 from the North. My one and only time there. [Post edited 11 Oct 13:50]

Interesting how we have different habits or patterns over time, preferences etc. There’s hardly a part of the ground, including the directors box (first ever game) I’ve not seen a game from. I’m cheating a little because the only time I’ve sat in NS Upper was for the Fortuna pre season game - just to see what it was like. Only one game in Churchmans upper too (a 4-0 hammering of Coventry). I never saw a game from the Chicken Run, but spent many a happy game in the Portman/Cobbold when it was built, mostly standing where the exec boxes are. Then it was Churchmans when I was big enough and all over the ground. I didn’t like West Stand upper tier much and have only seen a few from there, but when it comes to it, I didn’t care where we were as long as we were in. Same for my dad. This season, it’s the rug and thermos middle tier of West Stand.

Not a slight on tifos, the one against Norwich was great. They are of this age and on trend. But I prefer the scarves to tifos.

We must really have been struggling that season - several sacrifices from the several upside down scarfs!

Started standing in the North Stand in about 1974/75 when my dad stopped taking me as we always stood in Churchmans together from my first game in 1970. Great times, lairy, loud, crowd surges, a bit tasty some games when a big away following was in town. Only stopped sitting in there when I started taking my son in 2005 when he was 5, so had seats in the family enclosure and only been in the North once since for a cup tie. We’ve had the same seats for years now in Sir Alf lower but I often think back to the old days.

Would that be the same Dieter who would ask in a very gruff voice “anybody want a late Star” under Lloyds Bank arch circa. Mid-80’s on a Saturday evening? Anyway, that view of the North stand reminds me of my first visits to PR in the late 70’s as a very young teenager. My dad wasn’t interested in football (other than the result) after getting soaked-wet through at a game in the very late 50’s - so I ventured to PR on my own. Having very little money (and confidence) I hung around Alderman park taking in the atmosphere from outside rather than inside the ground. In those days the exits were opened at HT, and after noticing no one was checked/stopped going in or out I just wandered into the West stand once the 2nd half had kicked off. I done this for a few games during the 79/80 season, one of which I do remember watching Terry Butcher getting the winner against Wolves (header from a corner). I was hooked. Shortly after that I managed to muster the cash to see whole matches and the rest is history as they say. [Post edited 11 Oct 19:22]
