Security 16:11 - Nov 5 with 2814 viewsswede

Is it just me or is security at Portman Road becoming a little over the top?

For a while now we have had the wand scanner...beep, beep..."what's that in your pocket?"..."my car keys"...."ok, go on in".

Last night, I was scanned then had to empty out my numerous pockets on to a table...trousers, fleece & coat. Then I was asked "what is under your hat?" He wasn't impressed when I told him "a bald head" and curtly told me to "take it off".

Seriously? I'm probably the least unlikely hooligan to try and enter the stadium. I am now old enough to collect my pension and struggle to climb all the steps to the top of the SAR Upper. Even last season, most stewards looked at me, smiled when I put my hands out, and said "no, don't worry".
Has the threat level risen from pensioners?

I think last night was a reaction due to the recent knife attack. No worse than usual getting into SBR.

I was scanned and checked more than at any time in my prior visits in September Versus Portsmouth. Its increased massively in 2 years.

I've always found it interesting when people begrudge security

If it makes things safer, excellent imo

It does, but also slows down entry massively. That is why you do not have such security checks at railway stations.

I'm not accusing the poster of this by any means but there is a certain mob who will consider it an invasion of privacy or being a pernickity or a jobsworth etc

They'd be the first to complain if we had a security breach and wonder how it happened

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

It's security theatre though Frimmers, given the half-arsed job they do most of the time.

They told me yesterday that they are going to start cracking down on any bags larger than A4 size. Apparently my small rucksack with a book and a bottle of water in is too big - all very well for anyone who lives locally but a pain for anyone travelling or after work.

Pretty sure some of it is now mandatory due to government regulations that came in for managing crowds safely etc.

Thing is it may well be, but there maybe someone put off from taking something in they shouldn't 'incase' they get searched properly.

It doesn't though its what's known in security as security theatre, the illusion that something is being done to make it look like your security is enhanced, but actually for no gain, and possibly worse false belief you're threat vectors are being risk managed.

Because none of the operatives know what threats they are monitoring, what the threat level is, what to look for, I doubt they even know what to do if they suddenly found something more scary than a can of fizzy drink, yes those are banned apparently but fizzy drink in a bottle go right ahead.

And they let someone in carrying a smoke flare, technically a firework in the eyes of the law, at the Norwich game.

So its a bit of a scam really.

Last night, the old wand went off at my pocket.

"What's in your pocket sir?"

"Car keys"

"OK"

Wasn't asked to show them.........

Yes, 'Martyn's Law'.

Spoke to mate after the QPR game - he's an operations manager for a smallish club (attendances upto 3k) and he mentioned the new law.

He reckons even bars/pubs are supposed to have door security now over a certain size.

Can't say I'm remotely impressed with the additional security - not only is it completely performative - what p*sses me off is that we have basically all got to jump through hoops cos of a risk of terrorism that is incredibly low.

Firstly - I'm quite relaxed at the risk of terrorism at Portman Rd - if I wasn't I wouldn't have been attending for the past x years. And now we all end up paying the price (cos the cost will be born by the club and passed on) for something we may not want.

If the club had no security in 2 stands and full on security (airport style) in 2 - with a 15 minute delay - a scanner and bags being xrayed etc- and an additional 50p on your ticket (or whatever it costs) I'd wager most people would happily opt for the no security option.

But it is what it is - club has to follow the legals - we have to lump it much as we do at Stansted or anywhere else.

I always take my phone, keys and wallet out of my pockets and hold them in plain sight prior to being scanned, both at home and away games. Only time I’ve ever been questioned was at Villa Park last season when they asked me to remove my hat.

I did think the rubber glove and finger up the rectum was a bit OTT. Although strangely they didnt seem concerned about the Swiss army knife in my jacket pocket.

Honestly, I don't mind it. I don't think it's long before a football game gets targeted, of course I hope it NEVER EVER happens but the way the world is going, it wouldn't surprise me. I've thought at many grounds that it would be very easy.

That’s a similar policy to the one that the O2 operates for concerts.

I went to an MLS game where any bag that wasn’t see through was banned outright

I'm practically still walking as they wave the wand, as I know it's gonna beep and they're gonna ask what it is. By the time I've said it's my keys I'm almost at the turnstile. They're not gonna chase after me to see proof as they're just as bothered as I am by the whole thing

Security is one tier of that protection blanket, obviously more serious threats should really be identified through intelligence and various systems and processes to mitigate it

Last night the guy next to me was asked to empty his pockets by the security guy and he then snapped at him twice where’s your phone? I couldn’t believe how rude he was. I mean I get most people own a phone now but why not ask him if he had anything else in his pockets and at least be polite.

Peformative and irrational too.

I have no issue with being scanned before entry as I have been every game so far this season and if I choose to rock up at my normal time and miss the first few minutes of the game then that's my choice. What gets my goat is the 15 people in front of me and 30 behind me gainimg entry to the stadium without being scanned.

If you're going to do it, do it right or don't bother.
