Akpom or Azon on Wednesday ... 08:44 - Dec 8 with 2925 viewsBellevue_Blue

Has to be Akpom doesn't it?

Azon just does not quite have the know-how to impact games from the start yet and seems to consistently create good chances for himself in the last 20 mins of games.

Could quite easily have 5/6/7 goals off the bench this season.

I would go with Akpom, very underwhelming in the 10 role, but scored as a 9 against Hull. If you want his gold for boro in his stellar season they are almost all predatory striker goals.

I have seen nothing from Azon to say he is up to the role of no9 in a top championship side, looks too slow for me.

Too slow?

I think he looks quicker than Akpom, certainly when he gets going.

Has Azon started at home? From memory starts have been away which is going to be more difficult.

Akpom has done nothing, Azon has contributed more in less minutes, I think I would give him a chance at home from the start

Started against Charlton and Wrexham. 3 draws and a defeat in the 4 he’s started.

I think so.

Azon looks much more effective from the bench than as a starter. I’m delighted he scored Saturday but tbh Im far from convinced that he should be our no 2 striker for the rest of the season

I think Azon is very comfortable as a No.2 striker. The problem we've had is we haven't had / got an adequate No.1 striker. For me I'd be giving Akpom a go as a 9 for a couple of games, better touch and quicker than hirst, generally a much better footballer.

Hirst is suspended.

Pretty poor really that our main CF is suspended in early December, especially as he hasn't started every game and doesn't play a full 90 mins when he does.

Thanks, although not sure he can be blamed for the defeats.

I think I would still go with him ahead of Akpom.

He has but he’s been played out of position . He’s a number 9 , not a number 10

Try telling him that, he's said he sees himself as more of a 10.

He's not remotely suited to playing as a striker in our system. I think it'll be Azon and it should be Azon, he's the closest to a like for like replacement.

Azon. Without question.

Azon may still look a bit rusty, and i agree has looked better off the bench, but to say that Akpom has been underwhelming would be an understatement.

Akpom for me. As others have said, Azon has been a better finisher than starter.

Odd take!

He's a big, strong number 9, they get booked a lot, its their job.

Yep, lots of other factors. Hirst has started in all 8 of our victories. Big drop off whoever gets the nod.

Akpom was quicker than Thierry Henry and Theo Walcott over 10m while at Arsenal, admittedly 10 years ago.

Azon looks sluggish to me, no way he is running in behind like Hirst on Saturday

For his goal he literally ran in behind like Hirst.

And he timed and mega-curved his run beautifully to stay onside AND create space and angle for Clarke.

That little stutter before he shot was handy too. I'm guessing the keeper transferred his weight due to the stutter which made him slow to actually dive when he hit the shot.

Hirst got his goal and did well on that 2nd one-on-one, but on the first one I think the keeper actually got it a bit wrong and was too far across towards the far post. Hirst was wanting to shoot far post and couldn't turn across the CB to improve his angle (without offering the ball up to a sliding tackle), so it made it a weak open-footed shot and an easy save. But one more good touch would have left an easy left foot near post finish.

No he didn’t - Hirst ran half the pitch with the defenders starting just behind him, Azon was played into space left with nobody chasing, the defender still got back and blocked his cross.

Azon too slow - I think you need to go to Specsavers

73rd minute, Walton saves, Furlong plays a ball down the channel from our penalty area. Azon sprints diagonally the length of the pitch, and nearly gets to it ahead of the keeper well into their third.

Then, for his goal, he registers a top speed of nearly 21mph, better than Clarke or Philogene on the day. That's considered elite level speed.

The eye test is often flawed - always worth checking out the stats.

That, and his best season was literally playing as a number 10.

Think alot of this depends on what exactly our 10 is in comparison to that of the boro 10

Akpom stated he see's his best position being the 2nd striker, now for me personally that's different to what we had with chaplin who became an AM with how much he dropped into midfield and got the likes of wes going on the flanks etc. That of course is just personal opinion so no problem if you felt chaplin was a 2nd striker rather than an AM.

We've seen Akpom in our 10 a fair bit this season and whilst individually he looked to be getting fitter, I don't think we really saw much from his as our 10. Same as Sammy S in his time playing our 10 role. They'eve both played that 2nd striker role before yet neither seem to suit what we need in ours hence why i feel our 10 is more of an AM over a shadow striker

But i will cover this as i swear going back to the promotion season i called chaplin a shadow striker, So maybe it's not about position, name of role etc it's just the general skill set that Akpom and Sammy S don't come close to what chaplin gave us overall.

Im similar to Arnie in that id like to see him as our 9, mainly because it could be best use of him whilst allowing us to have a creative player in our 10 role.

a niche perspective

GeniusIQ match replay. It does mean you have to watch the match replay, to see when the tracking annotates the high speed runs. There may be somewhere else to get the data, but that's where I've picked it up from.

Hirst & Akpom aren't going to hit higher than that often (if they do). 21mph is top tier. The fastest speeds recorded in the game has been Mbappe and Walker at close to 24mph.

18-19mph is considered good for an attacking footballer.
