Reality TV and its outcomes and shenanigans are also not 'news'. Celebrity dancing and guess who games are entertainment for those who like such things. They should not be confused or conflated with a brief that is 'news and sport'.

I've never been impressed by fireworks. I think people who wait outside for hours in the cold to see them are hugely wasting their time.

But do you ever watch BBC Breakfast, which used to be a kinda news programme? That's become a version of The One Show, which I assume everyone stopped watching years ago. BBC Breakfast was on this morning for about half an hour in my house and not one single item of news in that time! I only put it on because I'd already seen the MOTD games on the other side.

You're excused if your vision doesn't like flashing stuff.

Otherwise - even this old bird loves fireworks (in safe conditions) you miserable git! & they don't get much more spectacular than the London/Sydney/other world displays

In my case it is the bangs. They play merry havoc with my heart palpitations. Which is a pity as I like fireworks. I will have to wear the ear protectors I use when chainsawing next time.

I think this is the moment where we collectively realise we were young men when we first came here, and now we're miserable old farts.

We're faced with dogsh*t politics and war for most of the year, I for one am actually thrilled that some levity is shown by following a tradition steeped in letting all the old crap go for a night and having a hopeful look forward (and being smashed)

Everyone will have a dump this morning but you wouldn't put that on the news.

I agree with the OP (albeit it's not just the BBC, every news channel does this) and those who have mentioned people winning celebrity shows and presenters leaving celebrity shows. The work schedule of Claudia Winkleman is not news.

See also reports that heavy traffic is expected on the days leading up to Christmas, on bank holidays etc. If people can't work out for themselves that the traffic will be heavy on such occassions, there's no helping them. And it's not news!
