I think Akpom is coming good now and won't be returning to Ajax in January, having done the work to integrate him into the McKenna style it could be costly to get someone else in and not get them fully up and running until early April. |  |

Would guess on a hefty £Xm termination fee to exit our Akpom obligations, moreover. A veritable tug of war for his signature, protracted negotiations, and Ajax are in the financial mire. Having said that, I can't remember when we most recently played him as a 10. Unsure if KM still holds hope for him coming good in that role. | | | |

Yes, I tend to agree although there is a case to be made that Nunez has the second most assists in the league and is doing well there and that we should try Egeli as backup.
I think a CM and CF are more important.

Nunez has been our best CAM/#10 by a distance, leaving us with three for rotation in CM. So definitely agree on a #5. A #9 upgrade wouldn't go amiss for sure. I haven't seen a #10 adequately cover Nunez yet but maybe that player is in the building already.
If we only manage one it must be another CM for me. All is well until Matusiwa or Taylor go absent, then we lose Nunez further forward for at least a period every game. | | | |

There has to be outs to bring players in. It's pretty obvious that we need a goalscorer. Neither Hirst, Akpom or Azon look like they are capable of 10 goals in the second half of the season. So one has to go and seeing as Hirst is currently in the No.1 position for that place that leaves a toss up between Azon and Akpom. My personal preference is Azon as the third striker.
Midfield we obviously need someone to cover Matisuwa. Maybe a loan player with a possibility to buy ? Most other positions are pretty well covered. I suppose a number 10 and use Nunez in midfield, but as he's performing well I don't think he'd just want to be backup for Cajuste, Matisuwa and Taylor. Then of course with both Burns and McAteer and Egeli vying for the wide position Egeli could be tried as a number 10 unless KM sees it as being too early for him given his age.
Both fullbacks have cover and Greaves can play centre back or in place of Leif.
You are then left with players like Baggott,Humphreys and Johnson who don't get regular football.
I don't begrudge KM & MA the job of sorting things out. I don't see any point bringing anyone in that will not improve the squad. Although we probably need a couple more through the door. | | | |

I think CF & CDM backup for Azor are priorities.
Going to be interesting to see what type of signing we make. We are not going to get a 'Prem ready' player whilst in the champ so may not wish to be lumbered with a player not good enough on big wages who we then struggle to shift on.
Which leaves the options as experienced loans ( a la Kiefer & Lewis Travis) or younger prem loans, such as Lankshear.
I guess a punt on someone like Piroe from Leeds on a permanent is feasible, if we did go up and we deemed him not good enough for the top flight it should be easy enough to shift him on with plenty of takers.
Also regarding Akpom, why would Ajax agree to cut short his loan agreement when they can sit it out and collect £6m? (if promoted) I feel like Chuba can offer enough without pulling up any trees in both 9 and 10. No guarantee a new guy would find his feet quick enough either. | | | |

Without:
14 games, 19 points, 1.36 PPG
Inaccurate to attribute the difference solely to Nunez I'm sure, but he is the most creative player in the league, statistically, and in my opinion he's been indispensable. He knits together what has otherwise more often looked like disjointed parts.
If we may keep him and Azor available for most of the remainder in their respective positions, I believe we'll continue as we are. If we sign a top striker but lose either in their specific role, I'm not so confident the former would compensation for the latter. I guess there'd be less urgency to create as much as we do now if Nunez is the absentee but we have someone clinical up front. | | | |

Looking at the situation you are probably right. An obligation to buy if we get promotion for £7 million. Seems we backed ourselves into a bit of a corner. But then having got one against Oxford he can step up. That still leaves a messy situation where if we were to get another striker we would have four for two places. I think Azon is a lovely fella, but maybe we would have to bite the bullet and let him go unless KM thinks we don't need a new centre forward. | | | |
