No real surprise. Cest la vie. Wouldn't it be funny if kmc does a news conference saying “we are glad it's off. All 20 players in the hotel this morning have caught a bugg and could not play. We called up the under 23s and they were on their way down. Great“ It happens folks. Let's enjoy all the red cards and injuries in the Brum v Cov match.
| Game off (n/t) on 11:18 - Jan 4 with 3221 views | Herbivore | Absolute joke, you're telling me that after one night of it dipping below freezing - and with loads of warning that those temperatures were coming - and they couldn't get the pitch playable? We've now got 2 weeks without a league game and will have a midweek trip to Pompey to squeeze in, really not good for us but happens to be ideal for them with their poor form and injury list. They should be fined. | |

| Game off (n/t) on 11:20 - Jan 4 with 3134 views | SomethingBlue | Nothing we can do now so just have to see the unexpected break as a positive – there will be legs in there that badly need a rest. Just hope we aren't now landed with a three-away-game week of Pompey, Wrexham, Watford in February – which is one of two obvious slots where this could be rescheduled. [Post edited 4 Jan 11:20]

It’s been -4 here. No chance that pitch was suitable for a game.

Not having it. With the equipment clubs have at their disposal one night of below zero temperatures shouldn't be enough for a second tier club to have to call a game off. At their end they've been saying they never have games called off for frozen pitches. They've played a blinder.

I think at this level if you have to call a game off due to the pitch not being playable you should have to replay the game at the other teams ground, would incentivise teams to get the games on/invest in ensuring the pitch is fit for purpose.

The fact is, it’s been Three nights of sub zero temperatures. It’s not remotely anywhere near playable when it’s that frozen consistently for days and nights. Have to get over that one I’m afraid.

Many nations manage to play games with temperatures like that or colder. They have a cover and their fans said they haven't had a match called off in decades. It's fairly clear what has gone on here. SB

As other posters have pointed out, the weather has been known well in advance and there are plenty of measures that can be taken. This isn't an unmaintained pitch down the country park. Games up and down the country will go ahead today having faced the same (or worse) conditions. Feel for those that have travelled.

Indeed. They say they were on since friday. It was sunny yesterday. Teams in the area in much lower leagues got games on....
| Game off (n/t) on 11:38 - Jan 4 with 2300 views | Rsj13 | I can't be the only one thinking that this is a farce? There needs to be a shift in rules to ensure that clubs prioritise this infrastructure. If it's force majeure, then so be it, but -4 in English winter is - whilst on the cold side - broadly par for the course. If isolated cancellations (ie, you're the only club in your region not able to play) were punished with forfeitures, then suddenly clubs would have the right infrastructure. Obvious exceptions to fan safety etc (thinking Rotherham a few years ago), but Clubs should have an obligation to make their pitches playable throughout the season, and be punished if they can't. Realise this is probably less of an issue for a mild temperatured place like Suffolk, but I'd have thought the same for Hampshire... It all links back to Ashton's comments about clubs having money for players but not for infrastructure. | | | |

I don't think refs are influenced by injury crisis. Although at championship level perhaps undersoil heating should be standard by 2025. [Post edited 4 Jan 11:45]

Nobody is blaming the ref, the ref can only decide based on the conditions there are. What we are discussing here, is whether Pompey could have done more to keep the game on, if they REALLY wanted to have done and whether how much they tried to make the game go ahead was impacted by the fact that probably they'd quite like it not to. And as others have said, it comes right back to what Ashton has said in the past about clubs in this league not being able to spend money on basic infrastructure but they can spend lots of money on players.

For a team in non league of course. This team is in the second division. Recent enough won't the FA Cup and were premier league regulars....... Do they normally have games called off if it's cold?

But on the same token what would rather have a great team playing on a poorly funded infrastructure or a sh!t team playing on wonderous facilities. Actually ask the club financiers and I'm certain of the answer. Just like Marcus Evans went for broke and it failed. It didn't with our us backers.
