It’s ‘clicked’ hasn’t it. 22:33 - Jan 20 with 3392 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

We’ve waited and patiently and I think it’s clear these last few weeks that is has come together. We now look a proper top 2 team

Coventry away change the trajectory of this group.

To go to the league leaders and drop a controlling and dominant display, I think changed the mindset and mentality of the group to say ‘actually, we can be very good at this level’.

Haven’t looked back since then, have gone to a different level - both players and staff deserve huge credit for that.

Remember Charlton at home? We were absolutely dreadful that evening. McKenna & the players got a right pasting after that, & it was a case of McKenna FFS sort it out! Well to be fair, he’s done just that. Praise is rightly due, but now we need to keep it going & improve further. It’s going to be an enjoyable few months I think & hope.

No doubt we’re a proper top 2 team. That’s 47 points from our last 23 games, the equivalent of half a season and run rating at a 94 point season. You could argue we’re a top 1 team.

Agree with that and think we’ve still got a number of gears to go!

Clicking. I still don't think we've seen the best of us yet.

I think in about a month, assuming not too many injuries, we shall be near our top level. If we are promoted I think we shall need another dozen premier signings. Then we will give it a much better go than last time. We have a much stronger squad this time around and our recruitment will continue to improve. Half of our existing squad may not be able to step up to the level needed.

I think we need to see where we are at the end of February, there are 5 away league games out of 6, including at Sheff Utd, Wrexham and Watford.

If we are within a couple of points of the top 2 at that point then we have a decent chance, assuming we get a couple of additions in by the end of the window.

Lots of teams around us are bringing in players too, so we need to look down as well as up.

We have a way to go but are improving and coming together as a team.

At the start of the season, the players were new to each other, in some cases the area and the country. I don’t care how much you pay for a player, by and large they are still human and will settle at different rates. However, you could see that man for man they were better than the opposition and who they replaced, but it was all a bit patchy and slow at times.

What annoyed the heck out of me was the lack of patience and support from some. It was obvious we would improve with time, as McKenna’s promotion team did, and I’m actually surprised it’s happened so soon.

But for the misery brigade, no. McKenna out from about a third of those who voted when the question was raised 2 December. Somebody suggested unloading Clarke and Philogene for a loss if necessary and bringing in better. This player, that player waste of money etc. no patience, no big picture, no appreciation that the players and club were trying to achieve, not fail. That’s what made this forum unsable after performances like Blackburn away.

Blackburn away was actually a turning point. Since 2 Dec, 7 wins, a draw and a loss. Every result deserved. In that, the probably to be promoted Coventry taken to the cleaners twice. Regulation home wins, contributions from most of the players. Burns back, Azon settling, Nunez getting better and better, Clarke and JP far too good for this level and crucially a terrific defence.

McKenna’s first action when he came here was to sort the defence out. It should be no surprise he’s done it again after last seasons shattering experience.

Looking forward, we have the strongest squad in the division. I worry about the no 9 position, but who is there that we can bring in better than what we have? Hopefully somebody but if not we should be ok, given the way we play.

In conclusion, no, it’s not quite clicked yet. We are 90% there and far stronger than say two months ago. This is an exciting, interesting team that deserves support. Can it play Premier League level? With a top level play maker (not a Phillips living off a long gone past!) and a better CF then I think we might be ok if we manage to succeed this season.

I am seeing Palace Chelsea at Selhurst on Sunday (a free corporate junket! Happy days) and will be interested to compare us to particularly Palace.

I still think there is another gear to go up still.

If we can get a couple bits of quality in between now and the end of the window, to pad out the squad. Give us another option in the 10. Give us another central midfielder. If a striker comes available maybe one of those. I think we can step it up another gear.

But the signs are very good

I agree 'clicked', clicking yes. Certainly a huge improvement results wise, nice to be keeping clean sheets as well. That said, still a bit hap hazard at the back gifting chances and not clinical enough up front and a lot relies on Matusiwa that said Walton barely has a save to make.

Certainly a fox in the box type would be welcome but I think you are right we are in 4th but have 5th and even dare I say a turbo potentially in there as well.

At no point did I say km was influenced.

What im saying is alot of what people didnt like changed to what many people wanted and the results followed those changes.

So no not saying km read twtd and made changes because if it.

But he clearly saw himself certain things weren't working how it needed to and changed it. Thats all most people wanted.

We're definitely getting there, I think we still need to show we can take this level of consistency into away games. We're in an unusual situation where we've played 15 home and 12 away, with the record standing at W 4 D 4 L 4. Obviously the February run will balance that out. It's not terrible form by any means but if we can pick up more points on the road, we can feel more confident about top two.

Whilst we have certainly clicked, I still think we need a couple of teams to fall away. The fact we have 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th all still to play at PR, does certainly bode well.

I'm still not entirely convinced by the away form. Home form looks unstoppable though.

So many things that have turned to make it click subconsciously

Walton makes us more secure and better with his feet
Furlong is becoming a monster
Leif doing what Leif DID in the past more so
Dara cutting out the mistakes
Kipre , need I say more
Matusiwa just gets better every game . Effortless
Jack T most improved player this season
Cajuste so much better the past 6-8 weeks when called on
Philogene , no words
J Clarke is becoming more consistent and scoring !!
Azon has found his feet literally . Best game by a distance last night . Bullying as opposed to being bullied

Lots of things have just clicked but vitally

It’s ‘clicked’ hasn’t it. on 22:59 - Jan 20 by FrimleyBlue

Yes. But as mentioned a few weeks ago

Alot of posts were at times when we were desperately waiting to see what akpom did as a 10. Mcateer was showing what we got for £13 mill. Cajuste was playing despite at the time being unable to run.

We were watching cbs rotated for no reason.

There's a lot that many wanted to see changed that has been changed and its lead to where we are

So its not the massive haha many think it is.

Part of the 'gelling' process with a new squad is trying players in different positions or in different partnerships. sometimes it takes 2, 3 or even 4 games to properly assess things. A new player may not perform in any particular game for a whole host of reasons - a good manager won't bin them after the odd mediocre game or two.

So in my view, although it was a tad frustrating to watch times, I think KM did exactly what he had to do, trusted the process he was controlling and is now reaping the rewards. Lets remember, he repeatedly said it would take a while for this new squad/team to properly come together - and it looks like he's being proven right.

I admit there were a few times when I was getting nervous, but it looks like my nerves weren't warranted! McKenna has done it again - build another strong team and deserves credit.

Currently he's earnt my trust again. Trust the process I guess!

Just looked at the table and the remaining fixtures and due to a quirk, they sort of split into chunks as you go down the table. We currently have to play:-
3, 4, 5, 6 at home
7, 8, 9, 10 away
12, 13, 14, 15 at home
16, 17, 18, 19, 20 away (plus 22 and 24 away).

Edit: I think this is quite favourable; I'd rather play the better teams at home. So it looks promising.

Interesting find!

I completely agree, we have the ability to beat any team that comes to Portman Road (excusing Charlton, which quite frankly was bewildering).

Given there are also a few teams circling below, they will of course have to play each other.

I'd still say we had room to 'click' more which is bad news for the rest of the division.

Signs are excellent. The 23-24 side was something else with the we'll score one more than you mantra but they don't control games like this unit does. A different kind of effective.

It is looking like it.
But I'm thinking back to the last promotion season where we had several of those matches that were right back & forth ding-dong battles: the 3-2s, 3-3s, 4-3s. Going behind & coming back at teams & scoring late goals. We were relentless at doing that 2 years ago. But this year I can't remember a game like that. I don't think this current team has been tested on that front like the team of 2 years ago. Can we do that if called upon ? Dunno yet. Perhaps we might not get into those situations again.

Yes I think that is borne out by the better goal difference we are accumulating this time (albeit with a lower points total). So many 3-2s, 4-3s, 2-1s in that season. Incredibly exciting but incredibly stressful!

A team is going to get the Exeter treatment, possibly more than one,

There is still more to come. Our full backs have the poorest successful pass rate in the team and we rarely create a chance from a cross,

Crosses not going to a Town player and hurried passes when playing across the back probably account for the full back’s pass rate.
