Who is the greatest threat to the UK right now? on 09:06 - Jan 22 by Swansea_Blue
You were also correct first time re. ecological collapse.
This delayed security report about how bad our ecological systems are and the impacts on national security was released on Tuesday to be buried amongst the Trump/Greenland/Davos sideshow: https://www.gov.uk/government/
A few specialist environmental news sites have picked up on it, but the only mainstream paper to do so from what I can see is the Gurniad: https://www.theguardian.com/en
But then the Beckhams have fallen out, so it’s a tough call as to which should get all the attention.

Devastating report and hopefully the Government will give us the bit on climate change soon.
The Global Tipping Points report, published autumn last year, stated that it is likely we have crossed a tipping point for warm water corals - cold water corals and sponges are also impacted at certain depths.
The current government has little regard for nature and the current Environment Secretary is employed to look for ways to promote economic growth and further degrade the UK's sparse ecosystems.

I voted “other”…. on 09:40 - Jan 22 with 947 views
Personally I think you should delete this poll and replace it with one separating out Climate Change from Other, you are guilty of false agenda setting otherwise...in my opinion.
We are now in the midst of the first effects of this existential threat (increased rainfall causing agricultural losses and built environment damage) and some effects are happening a long way away (wildfires and higher incidence of hurricanes for example) but they affect supply chains to the United Kingdom and investments made by our state, even the viability of our lucrative insurance sector. Long term the picture is looking much worse. Even the robots will suffer, there won't be enough heat sinks to go around to sustain their takeover of the human race...

Well this will certainly not be helping.
I voted USA, not because they pose a direct threat, but because they are emboldened the likes of Putin and and leading the charge to disregard climate issues to chase $$$$$. Put simply, I feel that all the other threats get worse because of the current USA administration.
Disinformation around climate action is surging just as threats escalate.
Governments can’t sit by in silence while public understanding is undermined.
Resilience comes from honest communication.

I can feel myself not having the will to comment any more, which I guess is where many people who used to comment on here in the past have gone.
It's been a suicidal response as a species - our governments, media and us, the public have failed and we're dead in the water.
Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

There's still a few on here who are pretty solid with STEM, but the amount of unsupported, linear reasoning you see from the most vocal on here made me put a few of them on mute. I've chucked a few responses in the plagiarism software: bloomin' terrifying where people get this stuff from.
The derailment risk is now very real and maybe it shakes us out of this turgid state of our political and economic systems or it could spell the end of any ordered civilisation.

Edgy stuff
I'd say the people being 'edgy' are those who have voted for the USA over Russia, a country that has invaded a European sovereign nation, engages in the sabotage of energy pipelines supplying Europe, has sent hit squads using nerve agents to assassinate people living in the United Kingdom and launches daily cyber attacks on our banking institutions, government agencies and commercial businesses.

it's things like that that make me think that politics on twtd often has a primarily therapeutic purpose. global events are big, scarey, and individuals are powerless, so constantly banging on about trump in the most extreme terms online is just like one of those rage rooms.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

The USA has recently sometimes been tacitly supporting Russia (as has the UK via some of our idiot politicians like B, Johnson, see Ned Plimpton's post).
The whole sh1tshow circus engendered by T,runp re Greenland, tariffs etc. must have Putin dancing for joy at the USA & the EU (+ the UK) now being at loggerheads & in conflict with each other. Divide and rule etc.

Or it's that Russia have always been the bogey man, so them continuing to be the bogeyman doesn't warrant too much discussion.
America have always been on our side and presented as the 'good guys', so what is happening is a seismic change.
Also, if you think twtd is obsessed with Trump, just wait and see what the entire global media machine thinks.....

i think that if people think the us is a bigger threat than russia then they've lost the plot on a mind boggling scale. it's take a step back from the keyboard time.

well the poll result was what i was responding to. 32 people on here currently are either southing their troubled souls by sounding off or have lost all contact with reality.

I guess it depends on what is meant by threat. I'd assumed we're not talking militaristic as immigrants are included in the poll.
If we're talking a threat to our way of life, then I can understand why people would vote for the US. As a nation it has the biggest cultural, technological and financial influence over us. You only need to look at the impact on the stock markets that the threat of tariffs had to see how much a "threat" the US can be. Not to mention the many domestic policies in the US that would potentially be copied over here should Reform get in. There's a real tangible "threat" to people's daily lives by what Trump does

well he's been in one year - how has he directly affected you so far? being able to separate the press hysteria which he craves, and is uniquely skilled in generating, from real world consequences in the uk is important. has he done anything in the uk which compares to poisoning people on the street with novichok, for example?

A few things to note
1) I didn't vote for the US, just expressing why people might 2) I'm not sure the reaction from the press to a NATO ally practically threatening to invade another NATO country has been hysterical! 3) I gave an example of his impact in terms of the stock markets. But a more direct impact on me and my life is the shift of the Overton Window and what is now acceptable policy compared to what was years ago. I don't need to go into details about my own life, but there are things that my family put up with now that they never would have had to before Trump's influence on the UK political landscape

stock market that's at record high? what a git he must be.
"shift of the overton window"? that's a bit indirect and is affected by much more than trump. brexit predates trump for example.

Sure, but there was an impact from the threat of tariffs, that obviously didn't materialise but i don't think you can deny that there was a bit of panic in the global markets at the time. That shows the impact Trump has
The Novichok poisoning wasn't a direct threat to me but you've used that as an example. Brexit has been and gone and wasn't an option in the poll. I don't think there can be much doubt that Trump is expediting the widening of the Overton Window at a rapid pace and that would have direct consequences on UK political policy

This is such a difficult question to answer. So much is hypothetical, and then you've got the added complication of direct and indirect threats.
Senior members of the UK Govt having to spend large chunks of time dealing with the fallout from Trump's latest whim will negatively impact the UK because they can't concentrate on important internal issues as much as they'd like. But you could certainly say the same about Putin.
Previous threatening behaviour by Russia in the form of poisoning by novichok is mentioned above in the context of threats to UK individuals (fair point), but then how about the hypothetical of a British tourist (most likely a person of colour) being rounded up by Trump's ICE goon squad in the US and 'having an accident' whilst being detained? Certainly plausible.
Would the US be as much of a threat without the influence of Russia though - that's assuming speculation around Putin and Trump's relationship is true. So is that ultimately Russia as the threat? Hand on heart I think I'd feel more worried if Putin issued a direct threat to the UK than if Trump did, if only because Trump changes his mind on a daily basis. But the US surely has the ultimate in capability if it actually went full on crazy.
And that's not even mentioning China.
