| I’d be happy if…. on 11:27 - Feb 1 by Bloots | …we stepped away from looking for a striker who “fits our system” personally. But I can’t really see KM ever changing the style, he just lives maintaining the same formation and making “like for like” subs, even when it plainly isn’t working. If he did then I’d be happy to take someone like Adam Armstrong. KM could still stick with whoever is his preferred donkey out of the two we’ve got for the first hour and then bring on something different (someone who will hit the target from 12 yards out) for the last half hour. Basically I’d take any striker that can regularly make the opposition keeper earn his money. |
2 years ago that was Keiffer Moore wasn’t it? He didn’t really fit our system perfectly, wasn’t mobile enough, but it just felt he was the right player at the time & so it proved.

….although Hirst is currently looking just as immobile as him and without the knack for scoring goals. This really isn’t the window to be risking a system player that might come good, we’ve got two of them. I suspect I’ll be disappointed though, and we’ll sign a centre back.

If ever I saw a Premier League ready player its Aaron Drinan. Do you want to drag up his highlights from when he was here or should I,?

Feels like one we could pose an interesting dilemma to, if we were so minded (assuming Soton would countenance a sale to a rival). Do you want four months in the PL now, followed by relegation, or four months in the Championship, followed by (hopefully) promotion. It's not quite the same as if we would be trying to persuade him not to join someone like Palace.

| You’re Mark Ashton… on 10:39 - Feb 1 by ITFC_Forever | And we will have for the next couple of season. We still have all the parachute money from last summer, plus the summer to come. |
The 1st parachute payments comes at the end of this season. And only if we fail to go back up.
| You’re Mark Ashton… on 15:08 - Feb 1 with 698 views | cbower | If we're relying on a final day purchase (which now is the only option left to us if we mean to do business), then I think we've failed again. The 'Premier League ready' thing is such a nonsense. We are not in The PL, it's where we aspire to be. Should've got someone in by now to help get us there and worry about a PL squad when we get there. As others have said, by this time last year we knew that Delap was going to go with that level of release clause and 12 months later we have Azon and Akpom (who KM didn't really buy as a 9 anyway). Massive recruitment failure. | |

| You’re Mark Ashton… on 15:19 - Feb 1 with 660 views | tractordownsouth | Yousef Salech would have been my first choice but recently signed a new deal at Cardiff so doubt that’s viable. I also liked the look of Pablo before he went to West Ham. Of the names linked, Sam Surridge is the best fit. I have some doubts over his build up play but he wins his headers and is a better finisher than anyone we’ve currently got so he ticks enough boxes. As a wildcard option, I like Ragnar Ache at Köln however not sure if he'd be available. | |

Not sure either of those would fit the system, and of course it's the system that's most important. Goals from "strikers " are irrelevant. As long as the system keeps working, who cares?

| You’re Mark Ashton… on 14:55 - Feb 1 by lurcher | The 1st parachute payments comes at the end of this season. And only if we fail to go back up. |
Believe (hope!) this is widely held misinformation. If you inspect the public accounts of promoted parachute clubs, you should find this payment is made irrespective of performance, typically listed as broadcasting revenue. 23/24 accounts of Leicester, Southampton and Leeds perhaps provide the quickest confirmation; all three should have been paid the same. It's crucial and logical to me that this is the case. Annual wage bills below £100m are increasingly rare in the league above. Even with relegation clauses built into contracts, most parachute clubs start Championship life with wages exceeding non-parachute income. Then you have the pitfalls of player desirability, contract lengths and amortisation burden, which often prevent clubs from quickly cutting their coat according to their cloth, even if they wanted to. Forfeit this parachute payment on receipt of promotion and said club would likely present a huge loss in that year's accounts, an instant PSR breach in many cases I'd wager, if not a severe hindrance to future investment.* *Quick case example: Southampton. Poor PL team but not a known financial basket case. Their Championship wage bill in 23/24 was £81m (promotion bonuses an instant thought, but then Leeds paid £84m in wages without going up). Even with broadcasting income of £56m, their parachute payment, they made an operating loss of £87m before player sales, which were essential to remaining financially compliant. Typical parachute club wage bills are why I raise my eyebrows whenever I read that our parachute parcel remains fully unallocated. Ours won't be in line with those two, you'd hope, but it's unlikely to be modest either.

This is complete nonsense. We absolutely get the 1st year parachute payment for this year (the whole concept of the payment - whether you agree with them or not - would be broken if there wasn't a payment this year). Thinking if we go up ,the club will go all out and do a Sunderland !! by SuffolkPunchFC 27 Jan 7:04As a team relegated after only 1 season in the PL, we would be restricted to 2 years of parachute payments (not 3) if we don’t get back at the first try. If we do get promoted this year, we still get the first year parachute payments (55% of the baseline PL broadcast payment), but nothing for year 2 (because we’re back in in the PL, on full PL payment entitlement).
