It's not in my wheelhouse 13:40 - Feb 19 with 1877 viewsblue_curacao

I think these cliches go through phases where everyone in an organisation picks up on them and starts using them before fading from use and being replaced by the latest catch-phrases.

The latest expression I'm hearing a lot at work at the moment, which really grates with me is "it's not in my wheelhouse". Grrr, very irritating!

Younger people and data-type people at my workplace keep referring to things being in "buckets" rather than categories. No idea what that's all about but it does my head in

That’s crept in to my old place, unrelated to data stuff. Areas to focus on have now become buckets. We may have once called them strategic priorities or something similar.

I recommend W1A to anyone who hasn’t seen it. It’s mindless entertainment, but amusing and they stretch the bucket even further. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/

Probably not a thing nowadays but I was told in meetings to 'bring something to the party' instead of 'Whats's your opinion.'

Did you bring your 'A game'?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Everything's got to be done "with intention" now hasn't it. "With real intention", or "intentionally", or "with intentionality", which is just b*llocks. Was everyone just doing everything accidentally until last year?

AI....
Sick to death about that acronym... looking forward to people realising AI just isn't going to solve deep technical issues that it hasnt been trained on.

A personal example, I was trying to use Gemini to help me tweak my heatpump efficiency. At the end of the chat it was telling me the whole system was a ticking time bomb. It lost complete context and went down a rabbit hole.

Same at my workplace. Told my partner the first time one was scheduled and she assumed we were meeting with the Mayor of Ipswich.

For all things workplace cliche related you need to visit the excellent W**kernomics website.

I have the book and it’s a perfect snapshot of the corporate workplace I have just left behind……

Reach out, touch base and get aligned with them.

And 'at pace'

As Armando Ianucci argued recently on the frequently excellent "Strong Message Here" - at what pace?

Everything's done at 'a pace' it's just that pace is a scale with one end quicker than the other.

I’m not sure that phrase is particularly scalable in our current ecosystem.

Intentionality…..please tell me this isn’t true!

I’ve only been out of the workplace for a few months and already this BS has evolved to a new level of bollox…

I can recommend some light reading to help you cope with the modern workplace:

Had to shortURL it to get around the language controls, but it's an Amazon link with a fruity title.

Hahaha, will try to get the wife to get it on her Kindle.

I spent yesterday trying to bring back the spirit of 1980's Australian TV and spent the day telling people to 'Rack Off'

Peculiar looks from the U40 brigade. "Oh, just rack off will ya"

I hope you went full "Rack off, ya flaming Galah!"

I wish it wasn't...

Congratulations on retirement, hope it's treating you well. Did you just bumble into it, or did you retire with real intentionality?

Being retired I don't miss any corporate bollox for a second. If you're on FB check out "W@nkernomics" - couple of Aussie comedians who are quite good.

And am sure there's a w@nkers on LinkedIn thingy somewhere that highlights the worst of the worst on there.

Thank you but I haven’t actually retired. Looking at my post again I can see that it’s perhaps misleading in that respect.

I had an opportunity to walk away from what had become a thoroughly unpleasant workplace, and I took it and have been fortunate in that I could take a few months off.

I’m ready to go back to work now and I had a final interview for a new role with a smaller, more personal organisation yesterday.

Coincidentally yesterday’s post highlighted the approach I took to the presentation I prepared for the interview; not on power point, deliberately free of ridiculous sound bites and pointless graphics.

I took the view that if they didn’t like it or sat there and discussed ‘optimising their outcomes’ they weren’t for me.

As it goes, it seemed to be well received and if they’re interested in me, then I’m interested in them. I’ve got about 7 years to go until I can retire, but I’m done with the corporate bullsh!t!
