| Any of you lot ever go to the wrong ground? on 10:32 - Mar 12 with 1236 views | MedwayTractor | Sat nav cabbie takes Earl Spencer’s daughter to wrong Stamford Bridge David Sanderson Friday April 04 2008, 1.00am, The Times One venue was hosting the clash of London’s football titans while the other was a sleepy Yorkshire village that hosted a famous battle more than 900 years earlier. Unfortunately for Earl Spencer’s teenage daughter, who had been keen to see the Easter Sunday clash between Chelsea and their arch-rivals Arsenal, her taxi driver’s sat-nav system did not know the difference. The Earl’s daughter and a friend had been picked up from the family pile in Althorp, near Northampton, with plenty of time to spare for the 85-mile trip to Stamford Bridge in West London. However, as Didier Drogba was inspiring the Blues to a 2-1 victory, the friends were wondering what they were doing in the village of Stamford Bridge, eight miles outside York and 230 miles away from Chelsea. One villager said that the girls may have been able to take in some sporting action on their unintended visit. “We do have a village football team,” Bryan Lawson said. “But it is not quite up to the standard of Chelsea.” | |

Twigged as soon as I pulled in the car park. Luckily traffic was kind and managed to get over to Welling but I was quite late and got fined.

Arrived in roughly the right area via bus, followed the scarves and paid to go in. Only then did I notice the goal posts and so ended up watching Bristol play rugby...

I was going to say. It seems literally impossible that it could happen. Think I read as well that Barca fans had to pick their tickets up from the city as well. Seems way too stupid to be true.

It was the very year they had just the new one built, but I forgot all about that and directed them to Layer Road. Am sure they got there in the end, it's not quite the diversion of in the OP.

The line “he only realised when he got to the ground” made me genuinely LOL. Sounds like he’s a London-based glory hunter anyway so balls to him.

I did that much later - probably late nineties or early 2000s. Didn't realise until I bought a programme outside the ground

Travelled to Queens Park underground station without even thinking because that made sense. Needless to say we were nowhere near the QPR ground and missed the game. Wouldn't happen nowadays with phones obviously :p
| Any of you lot ever go to the wrong ground? on 15:36 - Mar 12 with 528 views | bluelagos | Late 90s was working in Dussledorf and England had a Saturday game vs Sweden. I decided to drive so bunked off early on the Friday afternoon and booted it up to Copenhagen. The map showed a dotted line from Puttengarden to Denmark turned out to a ferry rather than a bridge but I made it late to Copenhagen in the evening ahead of the match just a few miles away in Stockholm over the water. In the morning I checked the map and realised the short journey was for Gothemburg and that Stockholm was miles away - so had to book a flight to/fro Copenhagen to Stockholm - cost me about £300 - ouch. Made the match, Ince got sent off, we lost 1-0, England fans rioted and I flew back early Sunday morning and retraced my steps. If Carlsberg did weekenders this defo wasn't one of theirs. | |

Fortunately, they just had time to get to the right place but it involved a mad dash.

Another England away was vs Andorra - played in Barcelona - the one when England fans turned on McClaren at HT before we won. Never seen a game at the Nou Camp so made plans - and was only when in Barcelona when someone pointed out it was at Espanyol stadium - so never did get to see a game at the Nou Camp - and still not managed it - the stadium tour is good but would love to see a big game there. Sort it out McKenna

Stood outside for ten minutes, couldn't find my wife or any friends and didn't recognise any other mourners. After a quick call I had to make a 5 mile drive to the right crem. Just made it.
