| So was there any daft chants then ? on 09:56 - Apr 7 by baxterbasics | On whether he goes - I think a lot depends on how the owners are really feeling about it all, and if merch sales/attendance/ sponsorship starts to take a hit. As it stands there's no solid evidence any of this has happened. Media attention on the matter is getting quieter. Maybe a handful will decide not to renew season tickets. But if that just means more seats being available for individual purchase the club will be quite happy with that - more cash. Anyway we know there's a waitlist for those when they become available. So for above reasons, I don't think there's going to be a swift exit for Mr Ashton. It's possible of course that an eventual, peaceful 'mutual consent' exit for him is being negotiated behind the scenes once season is over and most of this has been forgotten. |
Fair comments. Where I've worked - the "mutual consent" exit was often preferred as whole lot less messy than sacking someone. One of my bosses would sometimes present evidence of misconduct to someone on a Friday afternoon and tell them they were due to a disciplinary meeting on Monday at 10am. But if they resigned before that - the disciplinary process would end with their resignation. Whole weekend to think about whether they would resign and often they did. (No, am not suggesting that is likely to happen here - just that exits often take a while and mutually agreed as beneficial to all parties)

I suppose another option is that promotion (if we achieve it) largely overshadows what has gone on, the owners give a reprimand to Ashton after the season has ended, and back it up by putting in place a high-profile chair to keep Ashton in check. Indeed, the fact that results have gone our way may well have eased the pressure on him. But whilst I will still attend games, although I wasn't there yesterday, I do not propose to buy merchandise. The interesting thing is that whilst some have said the issue is now on the backburner, I imagine the coverage would have been much greater were we a Premier League team. Indeed, looking on the websites of the national media, I can see no report of yesterday's game presumably because Championship games don't "sell papers", with the exception of the Guardian which does focus on the Farage issue. https://www.theguardian.com/fo As regards protests, I don't think that was ever a realistic or proper thing to do but it would have been nice had there been some "Ipswich lives in racial harmony" chants which presumably there weren't. In that sense, we seem as a fanbase to have gone backwards since the 70s. [Post edited 7 Apr 10:52]

Its your prerogative Rommers, I'm surprised there are so many people who feel like they should be telling others what to think or do. I stayed away yesterday and my seat sat empty. Those saying it still counted in the attendance numbers are a) insulting our intelligence a bit - obviously they did, and b) missing the point entirely. It was a matter of principle for me, I emailed Ed Schwartz with my thoughts on the rights and wrongs of the situation in a measured way, and I also made the point I wouldn't be attending, the first time I've ever not attended a game for such a reason in my 25+ years as a season ticket holder man and boy. It was important to me to follow that through. I can't go to the Boro game anyway since it got moved, and will decide on QPR nearer the time. I won't pretend missing yesterday's game didn't feel a bit like I'd cut my own nose off, but your principles are your principles. I also like to set an example to my children, to stand for what they believe in. I'm still really gutted about the events of the last couple of weeks tbh on a personal level, and I've lost a lot of confidence in those in charge of the club. ITFC should sit at the heart of its community, and Farage has absolutely no place here. Simple as that. I appreciate others feel differently and they're entitled to, but I'll act in a way I see fit. I'll be at Pompey, Charlton and Southampton though.

It’s weird really because I obviously wanted to be there. I specifically had to book the day off as it was Irish Grand National day. Instead I watched it at home. Did it feel good? Obviously not. But that was the stand I chose to take. This thread alone has had 5 separate posts affectively revelling that ‘you missed a great game’. I’m not really sure what the issue is. I didn’t want to go because I didn’t want to. And now it’s kinda like ‘well if you go now you’re a hypocrite’ but if i don’t go then I’m attention seeking. Don’t really need the hassle and in truth someone has now linked my account on here with my twitter name and amongst various abusive messages and posts (on Twitter rather than here), has suggested that a) I will be filled in if I ever return to Portman road now and b) that they can report me to my employer at any time. And nothing is worth risking that job. Tbh with that and the forum getting on my tits of late, I shall bid you adieu. See you in the prem (if he’s gone). Oh and Jagwar wins the national Saturday.

I wouldn't worry about what anyone else says tbh. If you feel like going back, go back. If you don't then don't. Getting baited by OAP's on here on a sunny Tuesday says a lot more about their sorry existence than it does your own. Absolute fookin losers.

I agree, setting an example for your children is really important. How can I buy ITFC stuff for my youngest 3 kids that are mixed race, knowing that by giving Farage a platform and allowing him to use ITFC for promotional footage, they are legitimising his message. The twins have always loved wearing a Town top, probably because I regularly do. I can’t. So right now there’s a bit of introspection going on, and I’m looking into the he wider context of other hobbies and organisations that I expose the kids to. I encouraged Rommy to still attend, I understand his principled stance and think it’s admirable. Whether people attend or not, but merchandise or not, it’s entirely a personal choice and I fully respect everyone’s own decision.

Jesus, Rommers, that's absolutely mental. What is wrong with some people that they're making threats to you because you decided to take a stand and not go to the game? If twitter was not a cesspit and was actually a functioning social media platform you'd be able to report the person making the threats and reasonably expect some action to be taken but sadly that kind of abusive and threatening behaviour is considered normal over there. Keep well and hopefully this will blow over and you'll be able to return. For what it's worth, I joined your stand yesterday and currently am not planning to attend Boro or QPR.

I'm not on X but someone posted a couple of things from X which abused a few people on here using their TWTD names. That to me is disgraceful. jasondozzell was one of them: I think you were too. From recollection, he said a while ago that he was not on any other social media, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has decided to give up TWTD given I don't think he has posted for a week or so. Anyway, I admire your stance, and am really sorry for the abuse and threats you have received, including sarcastic and worse comments on here. I might add that I nearly gave up TWTD a couple of years ago because of what I thought were the racist replies to something I posted. As it is. Phil and leitrimblue persuaded me to stay. It's only the first couple of paragraphs that mention the controversy though, isn't it ? And in true Grauniad style they describe MacAteer as being on loan from Leicester in the next paragraph (he isn't on loan) and a summer signing in the paragraph after that. As far as protests go the only thing I wanted to see was both teams take the knee before the game, maybe they discussed it and didn't want to give the unhappy event of the previous week any more oxygen (there would probably have been a couple of hundred troublemakers, the ones who were chanting for Reform at the ground, who would have disrespected the gesture by booing etc. and that would have tarnished the Club's image further.) Hopefully the Foundation and Blue Action can push for a bit more visibility for the 'Kick Racism Out Of Football' campaign at Portman Road now.

I'm really sorry to hear you've been subject to such bully-boy behaviour from anonymous cowards hiding behind a keyboard (and who would run a mile if challenged in real life). The sad irony is that I've no doubt you've supported the club far more over the years than those knuckledraggers. Not that they would recognise that, because to do so would require a semblance of thought and balance that is far beyond their comprehension.

It was noticeable at some Premier League grounds last season just how prominent anti-racism and anti-discrimination adverts were. We need more of that at Portman Road, and indeed the Kick It Out campaign is aimed at all forms of discrimination.
