Phil… did you and the other journos know in advance? 07:02 - Jun 11 with 2984 viewsITFC_Forever

I’d imagine we’re pretty well down the recruitment process already if the club has known for a couple of weeks.

Given Phil's comments regarding McKenna and the West Ham job, it seems unlikely that anyone other than McKenna and Ashton (and those closest to them) knew anything. Phil also described it as a "shocking turn of events."

Every news outlet had a story written and ready to go at 18:00 on the dot.

They must have had some kind of advanced notice.

That's just standard media practice.

The local media will have been given a press release at some point during the afternoon, with a strict 6pm embargo on it. It's the same for any major story from the club - notice how the local media always have something ready to go.

It's the sort of thing that, if you breach the embargo or leak the news, you'll never get fed anything by the club again.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

If you’re a semi decent media outlet (which twtd is obvs more than that) you’ve the story prepped in case of.

Dubious. I'm a reporter myself, and although I've heard that major newspapers sometimes write obituaries or articles about celebrities in advance, I don't think that's common practice in other areas of journalism. There may be some templates prepared for situations such as a manager leaving for another club. But the idea that McKenna would step aside to take a break from football and focus on his family was probably not something that even the most creative journalistic mind would have anticipated.

Hi, editor here, this is entirely not true.

Yes, nationals will have obits for famous people ready and be updating them regularly - Attenburgh, royalty, etc - but to suggest that a media company would have a readymade article about a manager resigning to take a break with his family is nonsense.

Not doubting the info in general. But be impressed if it was filmed that recently and released. Surely there would have been some editing / pre watching etc to check everyone was happy.

In addition, both the EADT and TWTD reports were largely made up of the McKenna and Ashton statements.

You couldn't write those in advance.

Hi, I have some media background but I’ll certainly give way to your experience.

That’s not entirely what I meant. The family line won’t be prepped, mainly because it’s clearly boIIocks. I meant more the essence of the story.

Yes, it would seem the two events must be linked, so whilst the taking time out story is the best one to lead with, the reality is, he wants to manage elsewhere, probably at a club with a more stable chance of staying up. Given he turned down Brighton and Palace jobs, and he can see how they went, you can't really blame him. As football fans, we want him to dedicate his soul to us for 20 years and take us to dizzy heights, but in reality, football management is a brutal career path, he is protecting his own career and doing what is right for him and his family. At the end of the day, you can't knock that, we all do that.

Assume they were given the news ahead of the announcement as we were. Club had been very definite on him not going to Fulham for the previous couple of days when they were asked, now we know why.
