People voted against the Conservatives and, to a degree, Reform rather than for Labour. There was never much faith in Starmer or the party's manifesto even before he took control. And then he's shown to have no political whatsoever. jasondozzell is right when call out a lack of principles and that means he's been u-turning all over the place to try and keep both the party and public inside. As Prime Minister you need strength in your convictions and challenge the party to go against you should they wish to do so, rather than scrambling for a foothold.
Starmer is also unable to sell a message. That was obvious from the off. Probably since Blair there's this belief the Prime Minister needs to be a salesman. It's why he gained support from the public like Cameron and Johnson whilst Major, Brown, May, Truss and Sunak failed. Things are actually improving - immigration down (as the majority of the public want this) as are NHS waiting lists, plus the economy is stabilised - but he completely incapable of cutting through, either as the dispatch box, in an interview or with policies.
For Burnham to succeed he needs to have a vision and be able to sell it to the party and country. Deviate too far from the manifesto with unpopular moves will create outcry and calls for a further election. In a way he might be better off to draw up his own vision and take it to the country; try and tap into the goodwill factor whilst it's still present.
Some say Burnham may not take charge until the Labour Conference in September. If it's to be a coronation rather than a proper challenge he needs to take over sooner rather than later. The last thing we need is a dead duck government waiting for someone to take over. | |

The whip was withdrawn from Labour MPs who voted to abolish during the King's Speech.
It was later abolished and recently Starmer has been claiming its abolition as his greatest achievement.
Perhaps what makes things even more tragic is that at heart Starmer would probably have wished its abolition but its retention was part of a strategy by Labour Together to appeal to voters on the right which Starmer went along with whether knowingly or unknowingly.*

But it wasn't done as a matter of principle unlike, for example, Gordon Brown who argued passionately for it. And there was plenty else they did go alienate "progressives".
It has to be accepted too that the right wing smears etc against Starmer after he came to power were intense, and they clearly had an impact on people's feelings for him,
The interesting thing, though, is that the right wing media held their fire before the election.
Take, for example, the freebies furore after the election when Wikipedia says this.
"It was subsequently reported that Starmer had accepted over £107,145 worth of gifts, benefits, and hospitality since the 2019 general election, including tickets to Arsenal F.C. matches and concerts from Taylor Swift and Coldplay, two-and-a-half times more than any other MP."
