This Trump intervention on the Balagun red card cannot be allowed to happen 10:35 - Jul 6 with 6829 viewsunstableblue

Firstly you can argue he wasn’t looking at where he was landing his foot, but it’s a miracle the ankle isnt broken, it’s his full force, its dangerous. Even if it’s harsh it’s a red card offence.

If it had been a major error, there had been minimal contact or the defender had instigated the contact - well even then you don’t overturn it. There are no rules of precedent.

But this is Trumps America, its corruption at the top of government and rule of law is falling apart.

This past week he’s trying to sentence someone with trumped up charges about damaging his reflecting pool debacle, and is lying through his teeth about the success of his disastrous state fair!

Excessive force endangering a player

But of course in some ways that’s not the main point. There is no precedent here.

It’s outrageous

Unfortunately there is a precedent.
Ronaldo got a red for this in the second last WC qualifier.

https://www.nine.com.au/sport/

Red card for violent behaviour so a 3 match ban. This was then commuted ( under Chapter 4, Article 27, ) to a one match ban ( Portugal had qualified at this stage ) with the two others suspended for a year.

That's not the same though, and the qualifiers operate under a different set of rules to the tournament. While it smacks of the same thing, it's not the same circumstances.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Indeed.

However I've seen a few articles including one of the Guardian saying it's not quite the same as that was qualifying and this is in the tournament. Didn't seem to be any previous instances of doing it in a tournament since the one game ban rule came into effect.

It's pretty clear to everyone what has happened and FIFA have pretty much screwed themselves.

But that's the rule they are using ( completely ignoring the tournament rules ). Are they saying that 'get out of jail' rule Trumps (🙂) all other rules?

Oh great, Trump is now spouting off.

"I understand sports really well"
closely followed by
"the referee gave him a red card. I didn't know what that meant"

and his usual nonsense
"This referee, who is a little bit suspect. If you check his past, I don't want to say that because I don't like to create controversy, but very suspect... if you like I'll provide you with the past."

UEFA calling it out as corrupt too

Reassuring there’s some official pushback. The fact that Blatter is calling them out as corrupt is hilarious. What a time to be alive.

I can't find a link on BBC Sounds, but in the R4 4pm headline news, they played a t.Rump clip in which he said "it's unfair that the football rules mean a player isn't allowed to play the next game for transgressions they made in this one - how is that fair?"

Thereby revealing that 1. he knows nothing about football and 2, that as ever, he regards rules as something that apply only to others, never to himself or anyone/anything he has a vested interest in.

Dunno why anyone's surprised. If he can get away with it to start illegal wars, steal land, and perpetrate violent crime, of course he's going to do the same when it comes to sport.

Looked at balogun again. Absolutely clear red . He is stretching in with feet through the back of the opponent. Whether the outcome was intended or not, it was clearly an intentional physical challenge. Get that wrong and it's a foul. He got it very wrong. Red all day

I couldn't believe the desperate excuses Pearce and Smith were making for him on commentary. Now I'm starting to wonder if they're on Trump's payroll too.

Awards him a penalty, handcuffs the keeper to one of the posts and make all of the Belgium players stand in their own half.

Can't do that. If Balogun blasts it over the bar they need an excuse to take it again.

Trump has said it’s not fair that if you get sent off, you miss the next game as well as the current one.

Well that’s good news for Quansah isn’t it.

In line with political interference, it's being reported in The Guardian that Starmer lobbied FIFA to keep the kick off time for yesterday's game at 1am BST, on the basis that England would have less time to adapt to the altitude if it was moved to 7pm BST.

The rule is actually about interference with a country's FA etc so a bit of a red herring.

Yeah, I didn't think it was anything serious, hence I posted on here rather than starting a new thread. Though interesting leadership influence seems to be having some affect at FIFA headquarters.

Totally misguided and pointless from Starmer though, as the time change would have made no difference to their acclimatisation (it obviously would have affected their normal pre-match preparation at such short notice).

Extraordinary. 15 minutes of waffle and fantasyland nonsense.

Followed by a ridiculous claim.

When I first heard about people questioning the card, I thought he players had been jumping and it was just an unfortunate landing. Its nothing of the sort. Balogun is chasing and quite intentionally trying to put the opponent under physical pressure by bumping him from behind and reaching through the back with outstretched leg. There may not be intent to actually do all he did, but its as clear as day a foul, and reckless to be an obvious red. How have people been led down the rabbit hole in thinking otherwise?

Far more a red than Quansah btw

People often say "the game's gone" in response to various things, but surely there is nothing more serious that a president interfering in referee decisions and getting his way. The integrity of the game has gone. I would love it if teams pulled out of the competition on the back of this and countries started the process of leaving FIFA and setting up an alternative.

After admitting that he didn't know what a red card meant, he'll spontaneously self combust when he hears about the off side rule.

Is there any chance this is the domino that starts the UEFA split from FIFA? There must have been quite a few off-the-record conversations happening within the national FAs of Europe, even before this.
