This Trump intervention on the Balagun red card cannot be allowed to happen 10:35 - Jul 6 with 6924 viewsunstableblue

Firstly you can argue he wasn’t looking at where he was landing his foot, but it’s a miracle the ankle isnt broken, it’s his full force, its dangerous. Even if it’s harsh it’s a red card offence.

If it had been a major error, there had been minimal contact or the defender had instigated the contact - well even then you don’t overturn it. There are no rules of precedent.

But this is Trumps America, its corruption at the top of government and rule of law is falling apart.

This past week he’s trying to sentence someone with trumped up charges about damaging his reflecting pool debacle, and is lying through his teeth about the success of his disastrous state fair!

Even Blatter thinks FIFA are corrupt

Oh and FIFA have said Belgium can appeal their decision

The decision is a sham and a fraud. And what is the 12 months suspension all about?

One of the State Fair pictures I saw was hilarious, it was of the band playing on stage accompanied by some noise about what an incredible event it was.

Somebody had zoomed in on the guitarist's glasses where reflecting in them was an image of a largely empty field.

The Trump intervention is wrong but the outcome is right. It was never a red card in the first place.

How can you go up for a header, watch the ball, the movement of your team mates and be certain where your foot will land when you are being buffeted by a defender? If that is a red then challenging in an aerial duel is finished.

It's a red card if the on field officials decide it is, at least it should be anyway.

Too late. "We" are complicit in this. The time to protest was when the USA was awarded the competition and started moving the goalposts. Our FA and others should have boycotted the tournament.
We can of course still protest and sign petitions, but we know what little effect they will have on a corrupt organisation and nation.

Notably the red card has not been overturned... They have just used a general FIFA governance rule to suspend, in direct contradiction of the explicit tournament rules.

So it's not been justified on the basis of the decision being wrong. They haven't given a reason.

Unless it's appealed and the appeal is won via the official process. Not this bizarre "suspended" punishment they've come up with.

I'm assuming the same applies to tackling in general or when a player slips and takes down another player through on goal as the last man back. Some red cards are unlucky but it was given as a red card and is still a red card under this ruling. I am not sure the suspended sentence has a place in football. This Trump world cup has brought in some unsavory practices with FIFA. This particular ruling was enabled after Ronaldo's red in Dublin.

You've missed the point - it would almost be better if FIFA had rescinded the red card and acknowledged it was an error - which they can't technically do as there is no right to appeal in a world cup.

The issue is they haven't done that, they have used a vaguely worded part of their rule book to bypass the WC rules and then not given any reasons as to why.

Its a joke. Aside from the how and why its been done, it was a red card offence. If it were a case of mistaken identity or something I'd understand it, but this is a ludicrous decision. I hope Belgium batter them.

that must be right.

but having seen it, it's an arguable red, but certainly it was no where near a decision that no reasonable person could have reached. indeed the ref and var officials are by fifa's own definition reasonable. so it doesn't get anywhere close to the sort of indefensible decision where an exceptional intervention stepping outside of the normal processes could at any possible stretch of the imagination be defended. there isn't a rational explanation for what has happened now other than corruption.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

People saying that's not a red are naive imho.

He knows where the player is, he knows he's not going to get to the ball and, though it may be out of his line of sight he knows he's landed on the player's ankle. He doesn't pull away (bend his knee) at that point but allows the rest of his weight to transfer onto the ankle.

Slowed down and out of line of sight or not, he knows what he's doing there.

Looked at balogun again. Absolutely clear red . He is stretching in with feet through the back of the opponent. Whether the outcome was intended or not, it was clearly an intentional physical challenge. Get that wrong and it's a foul. He got it very wrong. Red all day

Excessive force endangering a player

But of course in some ways that’s not the main point. There is no precedent here.

It’s outrageous
