The song was about Euro 96 being held in the UK. First major tournament since 66. It was never about the trophy coming home. Because England is not the trophy's home and never has been.

The song can mean a team bringing the trophy home, any country can sing it in that context
We have our own context... In 96 it was a home tournament, any other tournament we can say we are bringing the trophy home to where the game began.
It's our song, other countries can sing their own... We don't complain about theirs so why are they so arrogant to think we can't sing ours?!
