Coventry leaving us behind... 10:00 - Jul 17 with 5746 viewsThatMuhrenCross

Just completed the signing of Switzerland international defender Aurele Amenda for £17m. That's now three through the door there, including Frank Onyenka and France U21 international Loum Tchaouna. Doing some serious business. £44m already spent.

By contrast, we've just got Emersonn (promising), Akpom (awful) and Kipre (okay back-up).

Are they though? They were starting from a lower base than us to begin with.

None of the players Coventry have signed would particularly excite me.

Onyeka was already there on loan last season. He's alright.
Amenda - meh, who knows?
Tchaouna - seriously out of his depth at PL level

Now's not the time to sh*t the bed. If we're at this stage in 4 weeks time then we can panic.

He looks a decent signing, full international played in Germany to a good level and European cups. Only 22 as well. Ideal profile.

Other team signs players for similar money and they are going to be massive successes.

We sign a player for a big fee and they are only promising.

Yeah those signings could be decisive in their games this weekend. Meanwhile we look woefully short on quality for our fixture this week. Who are we both playing by the way?

Ridiculous Rome wasn't built in a day
The important thing is getting the right players in.
Not signings for the sake of signings.

We should probably accommodate ourselves with the reality that Hull and Coventry are going to spend more money than us. Our existing wage bill/transfer amortisation bill will leave us less headroom to spend.

The fact we put 5 goals past them last season despite the fact they were runaway leaders suggests that they probably are further behind us to start with.

Also think their manager is going to get found out in a major way this season.

That’s a very fair assessment (at this point)

Leeds and Sunderland, have you seen the business they’ve done? Mind blowing, and this is our competition.

I’d love to know the thought process of the down voters - if we just clap harder we get more points???

Maybe they think their dream of playing Morecombe again is getting closer, because happy clapping abject failure, when it’s so important to our long term future, certainly isn’t support.

The window is still open, and we can’t judge yet, but so far, yes, it’s a continuation of Mark Ashton being about 2/10 at best when it comes to recruiting for this level.

And there are ZERO excuses this time, a recent legacy at this level, years to plan, all the money in the world.

This time it’s a measure of how well he can recruit at this level.., relative to his peers.

Leeds and Sunderland did it, one off the back of the play offs!

So it’s 100% about Mark now. Which of course is what he wanted. If you make it all about ME you have to be scrutinised accordingly.., he wanted to be the only voice in the room, and he is!!

So happy clappers…, how many points are we getting with the claps replacing quality players? 15 points? Maybe worse?

We aren’t getting 22 with the grounds it is. And our most gifted player is leaving - makes you wonder what Ashton did all last year as favourites for promotion and two years to build networks at this level.

He’s clueless. And that isn’t to say he’s not good in the EFL, it’s just the happy clappers haven’t worked out yet we’re not in the EFL. I don’t think they like the scrutiny and competition in the premier league, small minds, they’d rather we played Morecombe than have to compete with the very best in the game.

Darkhorse, you're so confident, put a grand on Ipswich not to get 22 points, would seem daft not to when you have such incredible insight.

Leeds have and always will be a bigger club than us, Leeds were in the PL for a few years while we bounced around in L1. Its easy for Leeds to attract players. Sunderland did well, but a lot of teams have spent money and been relegated.

Brentford kept with their championship squad off the back of a playoff. It was even their first ever season in the top league. All their fans thought they were crazy not to buy 10+ players, the fans accepted it was going to be one season in the PL. Thomas Frank disagreed, he said you can coach players to improve - they survived. Brentford is evidence you can survive without spending millions and changing the squad and the PL was tougher then.

Its not though, its like saying that marathon runner has his meal prep sorted his training plan further a long than us and has their kit on order.

Were still in JD Sports trying to decide between a white top or a red top.

Does the fact that the other runner has done those things mean they finish ahead of us? No. Does it mean they're giving themselves a better chance of setting up for success? Yes.

Its not at a critical point yet, but I really do wonder at what point some people begin to ask questions.

Its ok the pre season tour only starts next week, still 4 weeks to go.

Its ok the sesson starts tomorrow but the transfer window is open for another 2 weeks and so on.

Given numbers required and the need to bed in its really not unreasonable to be a bit nervy.

Do i think Cov making 2 signings is them leaving us behind? No, but that tipping point is not as far away as some people would like to think.

Our poor start nearly costs us last year, time to gel, bedding in. We wont have the same grace that Boro gave us this year, we cant have players needing time to gel post kick off.
