I am a bit curious as to why there is such a lack of interest in England ahead of the third-place match tonight? England has a historic World Cup gold, but no silver or bronze. Is a bronze medal not considered prestigious enough? One of my proudest moments was when Sweden took World Cup bronze in the USA in 1994. A medal is still a medal, right? because its a consolation prize, and both teams are still dealing with the disappointment of not being in the final, its like watching games after youve already been relegated, there are no stakes in it.
and the games themselves, certainly the ones Ive watched can be quite boring.

It means nothing. We've won the World Cup, why would third mean anything? Neither us or France will remember this World Cup anymore than the other times we've gone out at this stage.
Then there is the actual game. Everyone would rather be on holiday. Most top players aren't fit or will likely be rested. Its not a true test vs France.

football fans can remember World Cup finalists going back decades, but who can remember 3rd v 4th competitors. And that is because no one gives a monkey who finishes 3rd or 4th. The reason I feel that the interest in a third fourth playoff isn't as important or as prestigious as a bronze in the Olympics is because when you race, jump, throw, cycle, shoot or whatever in the Olympics you are taking on the creme de la creme in the final, not in the semi or a playoff of the teams/participants that failed to get through to the final.
Even those finishing runners up which I hope is Argentina they will feel not much better than those in this pointless third/fourth playoff. | | | |

Football is winner takes all. No one ever talks about their runner up medals, let alone third place finishes. With respect, I had no idea Sweden has ever finished third. I have no idea who finished third in any world cup except 2018 when England played.
It's a glorified friendly for both England and France. The only thing that might give it any sort of spice is if France want to win in Deschamps' final game and Tuchel is fearing for his job so puts the first team out. Personally I would rather see an England B team so it wasn't a complete waste of time for the players who haven't played. |  | | |

England v Italy at Italia '90 was a cracking watch from what I remember; nothing really at stake any more, so both teams played with a bit of freedom.
Neither England or France did themselves justice in the semi-finals, so another reason to put in a performance tonight; obviously a few players will be rested, but still expecting a good match. |  |

Spot on. Both the Prem and Ligue 1 start in five weeks. That gives them probably a three week break at most before they'll have to start training again - a lot of their club team mates will have had at least twice that.
