If GON thinks that he has the attributes that he wants for the team then I've no problem with us targeting his as a player that we want. However the fee that Celtic want for him seems very high! I read this online:-
“Celtic are happy to let the Japan international go this summer after he entered the final year of his contract.
The Hoops reportedly value the attacker between £14.6million and £19.7m as they look to land a significant fee for their star man.”
They signed him in 2022 for around £1.5m and now he's in the last year of his contract and due to turn 29 in October Celtic want something like £15m-£19m for him?
Now I'm not saying that he can't step up to the PL level because at the moment we have no evidence to say whether he can or can't. But if we look at the potential signing of Diop, who is now 29, and is in the last year of his contract but has 173 appearances in the PL and so has clearly demonstrated that he can play at PL level and is said to be costing around £8m.
I appreciate that this is comparing an attacking player versus a defender but there's no way I think that Town should be paying more than we are for Diop for a player not far off turning 29 with no PL experience who in the same way as for example the Szmodics signing would have little or no resale value and would be difficult to shift in the future if it ever came to that because he'd be on PL wages.
On the other hand if we could get him for a bargain figure at less than what we're quoted to be paying for Diop and if he's a player that GON wants to play a certain role for us then I've no problem with it and would welcome Maeda and wish him well.
But I think that we'd be crazy to pay £15m plus for him. |  | | |

We were an underwhelming championship side.
Not saying this Japanese gentleman is no good, but we've got different ambitions now. Waghorn was fine for us then, but he would have been found out in the PL.
Now nothing about him.... is he capable of making the transition from SPL ( Championship, L1 and probably L2 standard) to the EPL? [Post edited 21 Jul 13:51]

You're not just buying his goals. You are buying his mentality.
He' a big game player who is used to playing in front of 60,000 passionate fans every other week. Plays in the Champions League and plays in a World Cup.
Not everyone can handle playing for one of the Old Firm. Waghorn and Garner visibly shrank under the pressure of playing at Ibrox but did well for us.

He wanted to go though didnt he? I went to the pre season friendly at MK and arrived just as the players were getting off the bus and someone asked him if he was staying, he gave the most half hearted IDK, someone said we want you to stay and he said nothing.
Everyone stood there knew he was off then.
