Ruddy Nora that’s a big coup if we get him isn’t it?

That was a loan. If we put this guy on a 4 or 5 year contract that's going to cost us north of £26M for one players salary. Sorry, but not happening until we establish ourselves in the PL.

Signing someone like him would be fine. We'd put a relegation release clause in, so he's protected and we'd be safe in the knowledge someone would easily snap him up at 28/29 next summer.

This guy is going to be in demand. No way is he having a relegation clause stuffed into his contract. Sorry to disagree with you, but we are not paying somebody £100K+ a week this season.

Said which such certainty!

I think our owners ambition might be greater than some of our old school thinking fanbase realize.

You don’t think any Sunderland signings had clauses in their contracts last year? You’d be surprised, many established clubs have them in their contracts as well.

I’m not saying we are going to sign him or he is going to come here but the idea we wouldn’t pay this calibre a player over 100K a week to get him, disagree.

I assume you think the entire interest/link is completely made up? As we would obviously would have a ball park idea of his current wages and likely demands.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Exactly. If you want to compete at this level, you need to pay the wages for the quality of player, and then assume (hope!) that they still have a value and you can shift them if you go down.

Yes, you probably end up lumbered with some of the salary, but hugely unlikely that you're stuck with all of it.

The problem comes when you pay the huge wages, but the players aren't actually good enough, and you're stuck with them.

Bournemouth's highest earner is on £90K a week and they finished 6th. Most of there starting X1 are on roughly £40-50K a week.

I just don't see it, sorry. I know our owners are ambitious and willing to throw some money at it, but not that much at this stage.

They’ve already chucked around very inflated fees on unproven talent, so I don’t see why wages on a CL level player woild get them super twitchy.

The bigger issue would be persuading the player.

Guess we will have to see at the end of the window. I would love us to sign players of this quality, but think he will have better offers. If we stay up, who knows what we will be paying, but just too soon for us for now.

FWIW, I would be staggered if he ended up here, but if he doesn't I don't think it will be about the money, he'll just have a more competitive club to join.

125k a week on a three year contract is 19.5 million. Why is that such a big gamble? We buy lots of players for more than that.

Is it a financial regulation thing? Is it accounted differently in the books?

You seem to be arguing different things though. It’s not too soon financially, the numbers say it’s doable on the odd player, it’s exactly what will be needed to keep us up I’d argue. Unfortunately, he will have better suitors I’d imagine.

‘Hi, Exequiel? Yeah, good thanks. OK look, I’ve managed to get a couple of offers for you. You can stay in the Bundesliga and battle for the title next year while also playing CL football. Or the other option is a relegation battle in the PL with a fairly small team you won’t have heard of, although they do have a good historical pedigree. Sorry? No, there’d be no European football at all and you may have to go to Stoke in the cup on a cold and wet January eveni… Exequiel? Exquiel, are you still there?’

Just don't waste the next 4 weeks chasing someone out of our reach .... and then out of desperation bring in Cajuste in the final few days.

My gut feeling... he's too big for us and we're wasting our time. Go for someone within our reach.

'Exequiel, you've played in the Bundesliga for the last 5 seasons and clearly want a change, we've got loadsa money, and massive exposure in the biggest league in the world, and we'll make you the absolute star of the show. We also let players move on whenever they want to bigger clubs and you can have a very generous release clause as we did with delap. What's that, yeah we're close ish to London, nope no cathedral, but the marina scrubs up nicely. Fantastic, well send over the contract.'

Wages are recognised immediately, and can’t be amortised. £5M ish / year is fine though, and well within what we can afford within the financial rules. As long as it doesn’t upset the dynamic of the dressing room, why wouldn’t we do it for the right player.

It’s the same reason I’ve said I could see us dropping £30-40M on a CM.

No idea how real this link is, or if we could win him over, but it’s absolutely the right move if we want to stay up.

Isn't it a bit chicken and egg, if we don't pay these salaries we probably wont become an established Prem team. As someone mention earlier in this thread , Sunderland managed it.
