Emergency services and government are extremely concerned about the risk of urban and rural wildfires that could run out of control. Fire services are at breaking point. London stations are being called out almost continuously. But the rural risk is very high, with hugh consequence. And they’re now calling it out.
They have held a Cobra meeting, and this emergency alert will have come from this.
People are causing the fires, and I’m not sure how you can say the alert held no information - it was clear.
Also people stating it’s late in the day and this will be our last heatwave?! It’s going to be 28c for most of the next week with no rain. The risk is therefore now very high.
A real mass stupidity in UK PLC at the moment it seems - w@nkers like Farage and the Daily Mail denying climate change and denying the need to rejoin Europe economically, and listening to MAGA bullsh!t about made up crime figures.

I have heard upwards of 20 of these going off in the pub tonight over 2 hours.

People don't think though, and many are probably oblivious to the news, so makes sense to send a message to phones at a time so much of the country is on fire.

Quite. Unless people have lit garden bonfires in normal English conditions (surrounding areas green & a bit damp, having had rain in the previous fortnight), most have no idea how hundreds of quite large sparks will rise up and fly 10-20m away when there's the slightest bit of breeze. Particularly if part of the bonfire's fuel was paper-based - very light, flying while still burning, missiles.
Even without any litter, the usually green bur now straw-like, bone dry vegetation on the ground currently is just free kindle that will catch fire instantly when such sparks land.
I think the alert is justified - it's being talked about! Most don't need the alert, but if it means even one person who was going to light their garden incinerator doesn't, and thereby one wildfire is prevented, then it's worth it. |  |

I'd say the warning was fine, but the government should have announced the intention to use it in this manner, in a way they advised of the test ahead of schedule. Because I do agree this isn't a reason, IMO, why the system should be used without notice. Use it to get the message across, yes, but give people the heads up ahead of time as well so it doesn't induce undue panic or worry. | |

I don't disagree with the serious nature of the current heatwave and wildfire situation.
I just don't see the justification for using the modern equivalent of an air raid siren to remind us about it - every man and his dog already knew. If it's to remind stupid people to not be stupid - good luck with that.
The more the EMS gets used the less seriously people will take it.
Also, no need for the attempt to shoehorn a little political rant in there. Not sure what Farage or MAGA have to do with any of the above. |  |
