Some very mixed messaging on this thread.

Liam Delap scored 12 times when he was here last in a season we were pretty much down by January.

Forget sentiment, we have to be much more logical as a fan base if the only objective is to stay up this season, then he will score goals, he will likely also get sent off and/or injure himself but he will score goals.

If we stay up, he goes, we trade him and will likely make another profit on him as our top goalscorer.

FYI - We can also add another striker too, he is not the be all and end all of your striker search but a very logical asset.

Everyone is different. It doesn't mean there is 'something not quite right' with him.

Fair enough.

Although passing up CL football and a chance to work with Fabregas, who's been extremely public in his praise for him does seem a bit weird to me, especially as nobody seems chomping at the bit to sign him in England either.

Each to their own though as you say.

That's assuming Delap would come back exactly the same and hasn't learnt anything in a year. And Enciso for that matter.

From the little I've seen he hasn't learnt much at all, other than to improve his general thugish play and foul a bit more.

I agree with the poster about how he and Enciso never linked up. I wouldn't particularly want him back here. Last time he was great because the team wasn't high enough quality and his one-man show was often useful.

This year I'm hoping we have a stronger all round team and he would have to fit in and be a team player. He's shown no signs that he can be that.

No thank you. I didn't like the way he and Enciso linked up last time (or the lack of it).

The fact we've gone big on Enciso means we need to find a genuinely unselfish striker to bring the best out in Julio.

If you can get Breel Embolo for a third of the transfer fee and probably half the wages then it is an absolute no brainer.

This, with bells on.

If it's £40m for Delap or £15m for Embolo and £25m for Palacios, you're doing the latter two all day long, right?

After a poor season at Chelsea that has no doubt knocked the confidence of a young lad, would it really be that surprising if he wanted to go back to where he last felt confident

Not saying that's the case, but it would hardly be a massive surprise

Didn't he score most of those in the first half of the season before the teams worked him out and he then turned to just fouling a lot instead?

He's done nothing at Chelsea to suggest he's learnt anything.

A real shame, as he obviously has so much talent. Just needs to work on the mental side of his game.

He can still come good for sure, but it feels like a risk at this point to me.

Is he getting enough sleep?

Those are awful big bags under his eyes for an athlete nearing his prime.

I am only here this time for us to stay up, I am 100% behind it and think it could happen.

However, we don't have a striker in the building that have PL experience, if Liam wants to come and play for ITFC I would bite his hand off get him playing and keep on looking for the main striker in the mean time.

He will foul, he is a nut case on the pitch. However, he will score some.

Scored 7 in the first 19 games and 5 in the last 19

Can't be arsed to work out mins per goal but wouldn't imagine there's much in given that he was used more sparingly towards the end of the season

I guess I take the other side and say I’d rather go where the coach really wants me, not where they are waiting until last 10 days of window to see if anything better comes up.

I mean Fabregas is also a living legend of the game. I think for me personally I’d be gone in a shot if somebody like him publicly said they’d love to coach me.

Good point.

That also rules out a move to Inverness Caledonian too.

I asked about Delap last week and wasn't given any encouragement on the prospect. Would be a bit embarrassing to sign him for c£10m more than we sold him for a year on after a season when he's not pulled up any trees. Story looks very speculative - "thought to be among a number of clubs considering".

Wages will be punchy too. I can't imagine he's going to walk away from Chelsea cheap given he's got 5 years left on his £5m a year contract.

I could see a loan deal happening if we're still looking for a #9 late in the window and they're still looking for a home for him. Might suit them to get the wages off the books and put him back in the PL shop window somewhere he could do well, especially with plenty of time on his deal to realise a good price.

He is Andy Carroll. You will get increasingly diminishing returns. He hasn’t got the guile, foootbsll brain or touch to be a real threat in the premier league beyond the odd chaos agent cameo.

He will end up at a middling club and average about 1 in 5.

He’s also too aggressive and thuggish for the VAR age.

In the same season Hirst got 3 and Smodzics (no sure that is the correct spelling) also got 3.

So 12 was pretty good overall.

AS Phil said, buying him for more than we sold him for could be a hurdle ha

the reaction to an average to poor season at Chelsea is highly reactionary, shortsighted and totally strips the context of what’s going on at Chelsea and how that may effect any young player going in there, let alone a striker!

Plenty do and do very well, notably in recent years in Delap’s position, Daryl Murphy REPEATEDLY returned.
