What do we reckon now transfer wise then? 10:59 - Aug 24 with 4283 viewstractorboy1978

Four more in - LCB, CM, 10/winger, ST.

Out - Palmer, Ogbene, AAH, Mehmeti, Taylor, Humphreys

Frankly I haven’t the faintest idea.

We’ve clearly got a competitive first eleven. But the bench looked weak on Saturday, and we looked much less threatening when we changed the attacking unit, despite Clarke’s goal.

I think it is pretty clear we need a 9. But so do plenty of clubs. Villa and ManU amongst them.
We haven’t got cover for Greaves or Davis. Unless Ouattara can play left back. Do we trust Furlong?

The Palacios chase suggests we want another option in midfield, and you’d like our attack not to be massively weaker when Enciso is unavailable.

But we can’t get 5 more players in.

Hopefully Philogene and Egeli can both make their mark at this level, that maybe sorts out the 10/winger areas. Then a 9, a midfielder and either full back or centre back cover.

Unless this is the 25th season in a row when we all write Taylor off yet by January he’s starting every game …

I'm not sure you'd be dropping Fatawu in favour of someone who has hardly pulled up trees everywhere he's been?

He's just cost us the best part of £20M and started brilliantly.

Fatawu has had a far better career to Nwaneri to date.

Levels though innit. One has been trying to break into Arsenal's first team, the other has predominantly played in the Championship. Fatawu hasn't even scored a PL goal yet so lets not get carried away after a decent debut. We will be looking for players to come in and push the starting 11.

Personally we absolutely do need a RW, the drop off from Fatawu is huge in my opinion.

Plus I feel we’d be looking to bring in a starting LCB, not someone to cover

Feels like Macateer should be used as a RWB only ...

The technical quality between him and Fatawu is gargantuan and it was clear we lost an outlet on Saturday when he came off.

Agreed, and as Clarke demonstrated, players won't stick rigidly across their main forward positions. I get that people may think there is a drop-off, but we aren't replacing all 22 starters and finishers.

I don't think we will see more than a striker and CM. That's despite thinking we need cover at LB/LCB.

I think we would have heard more links in other places by now. Things falling though, interest demonstrated, and so on. We only have that for Striker and CM.

I think we will push right to the deadline trying to improve the squad in all areas including those 3 behind the striker. O'Neil has said this himself.

I'm shocked that after a few friendlies people are confident enough that Egeli is sufficient to come off the bench and make an impact regularly. I'm fine with him being third choice there but we can't become too reliant on Enciso.

I think it is more likely that Jaden becomes the back up on the left and Clarke the back up in the middle.

Think it'll 4 minimum: a young-ish left-sided defender, Palacios, a right-sided forward as back-up for Fatawu, and a centre-forward - I'm hoping for Ueda.

Think we might see Philogene as the back-up at 10 alongside Walle Egeli, but if his injury is bad we'll bring someone in.

It goes quiet when the season starts, then it's chaos right at the end of the window.

As things stand if Fatawu and Enciso got serious injuries we'd look pretty average.

Another 11 players then, if we take the messaging that strictly.

I think it is just easier saying that than revealing the places we will look to improve before the window shuts.

Also, at some point the money runs out for this window.

By my reckoning, we currently have 26 players who would need to be registered for the squad list, excluding Walle Egeli/Emersonn (U21), van Oevelen (going on loan) and AAH (not been given a number).

I assume either Palmer will leave or Button does not make the cut. That's our 25 if nobody else comes in.

Ogbene is probably going to leave. Humphreys might go on loan, but he has been heavily involved in pre-season, as has Mehmeti. Depends where/whether Taylor fits in to O'Neil's plans. Maybe a half-season loan to the Champ while he gets properly fit, then make a decision in January. That frees up somewhere between one and four slots.

That's assuming we don't get U21s for cover, either loan or permanent, who of course wouldn't take up any space.

In terms of who we need, I'd say another CF is priority, with someone to cover Davis as second. Beyond that, we're just looking at options and improvement.

Bearing in mind we also have to field cup sides during the season and don't necessarily want to load extra games onto our Prem first choice players.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Why does he come straight into our side though?

He's played 23 senior games of Football ever and let's be honest in the last year, he's had his Arsenal minutes taken off of him by a 16YO. If he was that good Arteta would have been playing him as he has shown with Dowman.

As a depth option fine, but the idea a 19YO who has started two Premier League games ever walks into our team is maybe a little far-fetched.

Definitely don't need a 10 or a winger.

Someone to cover LB/LCB, Palacios & Delap and we're done.

Delap?!

Ummmm NO.

He is certainly not the answer.

Out: Palmer, Ogbene, AAH, Humphreys
In: ST, CM, CAM, RM

If we get the CAM then Egeli to go on loan.

No idea where that would leave us in terms of numbers, probably too many!

You only have to look as far as the bench on Saturday IMO. Ideally Akpom isn't your back up 9, Humphries isn't your CM (he wont be anyway once Matusiwa gets fit), Egeli probably not your 10, McAteer not your RW and Kipre not your CB. That's not to say we'll do all of that business in this window, but I think we'll need to do some of it.

In: 8 & 9 as a bare minimum, followed by a 10. RW & LCB in an ideal world, but those might have to wait until Jan.

Out: Ogbene, Palmer, AAH, Humphries are nailed on. Mehmeti & Taylor are probable if we get our ins.

We will have to agree to disagree then. Probably a pointless debate anyway as Nwaneri will end up at a club higher up the chain than us probably.

We've spent a lot but reading this thread makes me think we need to spend 60m plus another couple of loans to balance it.

Some players in our current squad need to just find a new home as they are not the future here, and tbh have hardly been the past but are kicking round picking a wage up. It's going to be busy this week.

Emersonn and Delap in rotation.

We will do well to find better than that in the last week of the window.

The space our attackers got to run in to yesterday would be ideal for Delap.

We've got McAteer, Egeli and Ogbene who cost £38m - are you getting rid of all three of those?

Is that your argument then, just what they cost us? None of them are anywhere near good enough as a premier league winger

More outs than ins at this stage I think.

In:

Striker (different profile to Emersonn)
CM (Palacios?)
LCB (experience)

Out:

Palmer
Taylor or Humphreys
Ogbene
Van Oevelen (to Valencia...)
Mehmeti (wouldn't rule it out)
Al Hamadi (remember no squad number)

Al Hamidi is no.16 according to programme on Saturday

Some on here would sign another 15 players if up to them.

Luckily, it's not.

Don't see the need to exaggerate. It's hardly controversial to say we will want another attacking option in the 10/wide if we can land the right player.

As Clive alluded further up in the thread, the drop off was notable when Enciso/Fatawu (and Emersonn but everyone accepts we need another striker) went off on Saturday. Between them going off and Lukic feeding Clarke after being gifted possession, it had become a very attritional game and we offered little to no threat.

It's not remotely outlandish to assume we'd want another versatile RW/LW option alongside Palacios, another CF and some left CB cover.

If we get all of the above, we're pretty set for the season, barring some injury disasters.

Yep, we need a Swiss army knife of a squad that can tolerate three or four injuries/absences in any given week. Pretty sure we'll end up with one this time.

In this thread alone we've got about 10 suggestions of transfers we simply don't need.
Egeli out on loan? No thanks.
Another RB? Not needed.
Another 10? Why?

We need a bit of cohesion and can't just replace everyone.

Only three can start, with three off the bench and we've got...

Clarke
Maeda
Jaden
Enciso
Egeli
Fatawu
McAteer

Plus others who can do a job if needed.

Striker, central midfield and LB/LCB I agree we need.

I'm not sure why we aren't saying a RB is on the list when we've just started a CB there.
