Lots to choose from but I’ll go for Adrian Paz (although that was after I’d got over the disappointment of it not being Batistuta as initially reported). For the first few games he got a free pass as he was settling in but it then became increasingly clear he either just wasn’t that good or at least he wasn’t right for us. He had a few good moments but not enough. Thankfully Taricco who came with him more than made up for it eventually. |  |

This thread has reminded me of some absolute classic TWTDisms over the years where a small but substantial percentage of the board has become convinced that some random player was going to be the next big thing.
Jonathan Parr being "an upgrade on Tyrone Mings" was a personal favourite.
Although he never signed, Curtis "Like Sh1ttu with the footwork of JET" Tilt is one I will still be laughing about in 30 years.
Jonathan Douglas going from being a great free agent signing who was exactly what we needed to looking like he didn't even know he was on a football pitch was a good one.
Scott Fraser and Kyle Edwards another two honourable mentions for the sheer amount of hype they generated. |

Stuart Slater is the right answer for those of us that remember. He was signed at a time when clubs didn’t bring in 11 new players each season and that spending that sort of money on one player was a big thing
Sergi Baltacha was probably another that we never really saw his true potential given the hoopla around his arrival
Paz certainly didn’t take to English football but then Tarricco took his time before he did. Another that we only saw glimpses of was Vlado Bozinovsk. I always felt sorry for Le Pen and Civelli as they both got bad injuries before they could do anything
Certainly Chopra, McLean, Ebanks-Blake and Parkin never lived up to expectations - as did Bullard when he signed permanently.

Signed as a box to box midfielder it turned out that tottering out of the centre circle was a bridge too far most of the time. I thought MM was scraping the Evans barrel at the time, but it was then I realised we’d actually rolled the barrel aside for what was underneath it.
Kalvin Phillips? He’d been poor the previous season and with wheeling him in, it was more hope than expectation with a healthy slice of desperation chucked in. So I wasn’t disappointed in the way I was saying with Slater. |  | | |

Not dreadful given the outlay but the hype/anticipation around Balint Bajner signing for him to be absolute toilet.
My shout would be Tommy Oar. Signed by McCarthy to add that bit of quality to an efficient, workmanlike competitive team, but other than a decent showing Vs Man United in the league cup i dobt remember any of his 9 (nine) appearances for us before he swiftly made his exit. |

A really good shout that. He'd been good for Reading, played loads of games when Reading were actually quite good for 5 mins, had been captain. Even at 34 he seemed like a solid, battle hardened, experienced reader of the game that would add leadership to our backline. I genuinely thought that we'd made a sensible just what we need signing.
