| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 17:01 - Sep 1 by DJR | It's not even a question of overall quality, if O'Neil persists with playing 3 CBs, bringing in Kipre would leave no CB on the bench. |
I've never understood why people think we're going to play with a 3. G'ON has said all along 4-2-3-1 is his preferred system. The point stands though, we need more defensive depth. In hindsight, I'd have been happy to forego one of the midfield signings (Florentino?) for another top LCB signing in favour of squad balance.

| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 16:57 - Sep 1 by portmanking | I would agree with the original poster. An injury to O'Shea or Diop and we're having to play Kipre... he's looked even more lumbering in possession in pre-season than last season. He's so not a PL defender. I mocked Coventry for signing Ethan Pinnock a couple of weeks ago. I didn't realise we'd not even look to improve our cover options. |
I'm laughing at the use of "gross neglience".

This type of comment really is pathetic. nobody even considers that they've forgotten about certain positions - especially the most important position to win games. You are allowed to point of a clubs failings without being negative. The window has been good, with some real quality, stepping back and looking at it come 2300 though issues will be there

| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 17:03 - Sep 1 by _CliveBaker_ | Were people really expecting us to flip a full 25 man squad in 1 window? I'm no Kipre lover by any stretch but we've spent £15m on Ouattara, that could free O'Shea up centrally. It's equally true that an injury to Scherpen and Walton is starting. An injury to Fatawu and McAteer starts. An injury to Enciso and we're relying on Egeli. I'm not sure they're any less concerning, more in some instances IMO. Isn't that just the reality of being a newly promoted side? We've got versatility, we've had a good window, and we've made a decent start to the season. Lets attack the next 17 games and see where we are in Jan. |
Says a lot more about our recruitment last season really. Kipre, McAteer and Egeli all decent in spells in the Champ, is about as high praise you could give. At least Egeli has age on his side.

| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 16:59 - Sep 1 by Superblue95 | We’ve had a good window but I’m not sure you can call it amazing if we end up with 6 centre mids and 3 number 10a, while only having 1 left back, 1 left footed centre back and 1 proper right back (plus Outtara who nobody actually knows where his best position is). It’s incredibly unbalanced |
Totally agreed. I guess we should really wait till the window is shut before reacting too quickly to one report (although I trust Watson) - but it does feel very unbalanced.

| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 17:02 - Sep 1 by bsw72 | It’s not automatically a strawman just because someone draws an implication from your words or challenges your framing. When you call it “gross negligence”, it reads like you’re accusing recruitment of a serious failure of duty and potentially that they didn’t do enough work to bring in another centre-back. However the fact we’ve only signed one centre-back doesn’t, by itself, prove they “haven’t bothered” or “haven’t tried”; it only tells us the outcome. They could have tried and failed, been priced out, had targets choose other clubs, or prioritised other areas. So the stronger point isn’t “strawman”, it’s that the claim about lack of effort isn’t evidenced by the signings alone. |
Precisely, much better expressed than I could have said, thanks.

You'd need both of them to get injured for Kipre to come in. Furlong or Ouattara would come in at right back. Not ideal though.

Nowhere have I mentioned a 'lack of effort'. The fact remains we have signed one centre-back, an area in which we look pretty weak, both in ability and depth.

Just to add a bit of context, Manchester City with their 115 alleged FFP breaches have just agreed to spend more than half our entire summer spend on one player. That's the level playing field we're up against.

It is near impossible, if not actually impossible to recruit premier League standard players in the championship. So the recruitment in the championship did it's job. Got us promoted.

| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 16:07 - Sep 1 by Zx1988 | For me it's not even that - it's two-fold: GON spoke on Sunday about wanting to get two more deals done - so he's of the opinion that there's still room for necessary improvement within the squad. We're lacking PL-quality backup in at least two positions - LB and RM. If Davis or Fatawu catch a nasty case of knack, then their backups are going to be Greaves and McAteer respectively. Decent players, but definitly not PL quality in those two positions. |
FFs how many back up's do you want, we are not a top 6 team who can spend £40m on a player that you never see again. Chelsea apparently have paid £40m for an 18 year old from Atalanta for 2027/28 season. Atalanta have let him go out on loan to Fulham/Palace on a years loan. This what we are battling against. We have 2 PL loan spots that we haven't even tried to work with (nothing linked in the media anyhow bar Man City's Ba).

From a poster I really respect, I think the final sentence is uncalled for. There's also balance. This window is nowhere a disaster. The recruitment team has done a good job. But it's fair to say the defence is missing at least one player to feel completely comfortable about the situation heading into the run until Christmas. Too often we've had to wait until January then desperately hunt for someone because we didn't manage to cover it over the summer - albeit usually a striker. Add into O'Neil specifically referring to two players and now that's down to one, it will result in frustration and concern. Some of it will be hyperbole, some of it will be over-the-top but, from my point of view, I don't think the worry itself is unreasonable.

One CB signed” is a fact, no argument from me. “Gross negligence” is an attribution about conduct (reckless dereliction), and you’ve offered no evidence for that beyond the outcome above. JHowever exceptional delivery by the recruitment team and club overall in this transfer window also makes that attribution look somewhat overly dramatic. Therefore it’s not a strawman to push back on what your wording implies, it’s a challenge to how you have framed this remaining situation.

Fair point re my last sentence, did have a debate with myself about whether to include it, decided to because by that time I’d had it up to here with said poster’s “gross negligence” and recruitment team allegedly “forgetting” about “certain positions”. I’ve never disagreed at any point that our defence needed strengthening, quite the opposite. It’s the assumption by some that MA & team haven’t even been trying that annoys me - I’m not MA’s greatest fan, but I’d bet a small fortune that he’s been working his socks off trying to get something done in that department.
