| So the ‘visitor’ to our FOOTBALL club claims Russia didn’t interfere…. 00:16 - Oct 13 with 4906 views | unstableblue | … In Brexit. And that Burnham is lying. When it’s proven they did. What impact their social media influence - on scale - caused to the Leave vote is of course open to interpretation. BUT - what is now emerging is that Ukraine have now bombed Russian server farms. And the level of Trump promoting accounts have significantly diminished. It’s almost like our biggest security threat - Putin - is pro Trump/Reform. It’s almost like Reform are bad for the UK?! Letting that dangerous idiot into our club to use our brand remains a stain. [Post edited 13 Oct 12:07]

You’ll have to show your working outs and homework for this one. Of the past fifty years, 32 have been under a Tory administration. Thatcher, Johnson, Truss, May and Sunak have not exactly been left-wingers. Plus Cameron oversaw austerity with his immediate successors responsible for Brexit. So, how exactly has this been labours fault? [Post edited 13 Oct 9:54]

I'm fascinated to know what is the biggest significant negative impact that changes in the nation has had on you and which left wing policy you attribute it to. Same question to benters.

They don't know in the same way that Benters doesn't have any clue about historic or possible future policies. It's what they are directed to believe and thus they believe it. SB

That's clearly not true though. Most people in this country are very fortunate compared to the majority of the world population. Fairly clear from your other replies to posters that you're just trolling again though so I'll leave it there. SB

Even beyond the Abu Dhabi scandal: Homelessness increased Clean air zone U turn GMP being placed under special measures. What were the triumphs? Buses? Some fiscal devolution? Whether devolution has helped Scotland or Wales over the last generation is debatable, but I would argue neutral at best. Having more low rate, local politicians hasn't moved the dial. Who knew? The issue now is that we have one of them as PM. |
GMP being in special measures is historic and part of the results of things like Sarah Everards murder. In the same way the Met and many forces had to shed officers who were corrupt/criminal. Homelessness increases have fluctuated massively nationally through austerity. A decade or so ago a huge shelter closed and flooded the streets with people. It massively improved under his watch in terms of actual people tough sleeping in the city and you could see that. There have been national and international factors which have plunged more and more people into poverty. Salford is an example of a borough which opened special facilities for the homeless too. Clean Air much like ULEZ seems to be a cause of disgust and issue for people that don’t want cleaner air or to reduce health issues. Had it been reported on fairly the groundswell may have been different, but it seems now that it was a move ahead of its time and will be coming to lots of places soon. I’m guessing you’ve never been up here and seen the progress in infrastructure and regeneration judging from this parroting of Tory press points. No one would say he invented everything, but he built on lots of work and improved the city no end especially for youngsters and the elderly beyond more than just transport. The fact big employers are moving here in the last few years has been good. The big building of skyscrapers etc not something I like as much.

Some fair points in there. I suspect people often get credited for things they didn't do in the same way they get criticised when things go wrong that were not their fault. What I would support is creating a business atmosphere, which it seems he did to an extent to attract foreign investment. I look forward to national business rate cuts, a reduction in corporation tax and as much burning of regulation as possible. However, attributing modest city success to Burnham is a bit of a stretch for me. More importantly, I don't think any of that is particularly relevant to national politics. That is particularly the case with macroeconomic policy and foreign policy. His kmowledge and insight for both of which I don't trust. Still, it's a good job he has so much knowledge and experience in his cabinet to draw on...... As usual I have to respond to your personal points. I don't read the 'Tory Press' (never the Mail, Express or Sun). I do visit the Telegraph on occasions as well as the Spectator, Spiked and Unheard. But this is almost always for the opinion pieces. When criticising the right-wing press, I think it's important to remember the political biases of the Guardian. I enjoy reading opinion pieces from many on there in spite of this. I have posted from a variety of sources on here in the past and read across many domestic and international sources. I don't travel too much to northern England as I have no connections there.

His 'everyday man' persona is going to come under serious threat from the Manchester City scandal, particularly given Labour's stance on foreign influence. But while that is embarrassing for him, it's the budget in 2 weeks time that is really going to be defining. It's going to be a very tough winter with high fuel costs, pressures on cost of living and higher costs of borrowing. I was thinking yesterday about the 50 year economic cycle. 1870s Agricultural Depression, 1930s Great Depression, 1980s deep recession. I wonder whether debt, demographics or foreign tensions will be the cause. |
How is the Manchester City scandal embarrassing for Andy Burnham? I'm not even sure the government should be getting involved.

In a number of ways. Downing Street has had to issue two separate clarifications on comments he has made so far. He is commenting on an open issue, subject to appeal He has had to publish all Mayoral dealings Another £300k worth of freebies, Lucy Powell benefiting nicely. The left will say it's all within the rules of course. It is and I have been lucky enough to be given some in my career, but then I'm not a socialist. Happy to take to Petrodollars from the UAE, so let's go easy on the green levies then.

Because he gave an inappropriate public statement during an ongoing legal dispute, seemingly sympathetic to the guilty party and expressing concern if they were punished in a way they could conceivably be by an "independent" regulator. That could quite easily be interpreted as applying political pressure. To quote a senior club source from the BBC: it was "at best naive and at worst quite manipulative, and that is not a good look". https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo That's also brought into question how much interaction he had with the City ownership and management while mayor. What dealings and deals occurred. All because he piped up with an out of order comment.
