This is the thing that confuses me. I'm knocking on the door of 50, but can't imagine I'll suddenly turn into a rampant bigot (any more than I am now).
Where the feck do they come from? What happened to the decades of enlightenment in the 60s/70s; drugs, sex, rock & roll, smashing the system? These gammons must be made, not born. Is it natural to become more conservative over the years, or is it because of the media/system makes them that way? Why is Chambo playing twice a week? And for the love of God, why haven't Pot Noodle not changed their flavours in about 40 years?

As for Harry, I am no royalist but the way he's thrown his nan under the bus while she's approaching her time just to tell the world that his family is shte (we already know) just shows the level of the man. He's now got chunks of people alleging his nan is a racist while his wife is comparing herself to the Little Mermaid. Someone ought to point out to her that's also a fairytale.

There's definitely some truth in the theory of people bcoming more conservative when they grow up but Thatcher won the most votes among 18-24s in both 1979 and 1983, so many of that generation, who are now aged 60-70, will have always been Conservative. Interestingly, this data shows that pre-2010, votes were split fairly evenly among generations, with the exception of the 2 Labour landslides in 1997 and 2001.

The trouble with the decal exhibiting counter culture was that easily adopted short phrases were just as easily licked off. To take a simple view of Marshall McLuhan's 'the medium is the message', if you like to be one of the crowd and to have an uncomplicated thought then in the Seventies you could wear something with 'Keep On Trucking' emblazoned on it and for the last five years you could sport an item with 'MAGA' on it.or 'Vote Leave' this side of the pond, without having to engage deeply on any underlying implications. This may seem condescending on my part but I have too often found that a simple question about,for example, just going along with the flow or trying to define how great or sovereignty are effectively achieved in a connected and interdependent World can be met with consternation.
So the dialectic of experience, of seeing old patterns in new situations, can bring about a world weary acceptance of established institutions like the monarchy but coupled with an appreciation of the limitations of alternatives. 'I didn't ask to be born and I want everything to be done differently' becomes a tacit approval of the way things are and what little can be done to advance social justice. And the importance of getting that little improvement done as well as the next little improvement to social justice after that first foundation is laid, instead of chasing unicorns and finding out that the unicorns run too fast...or are mirages...that run too fast.
So that is some of the reason why I have ended up as a monarchist (note the small 'm') and a unionist (if I could make the 'u' smaller I would) at sixty five. And a socialist and an internationalist. Because you need some nice big questions to keep yourself occupied in your dotage. | |
