Not having a go at Penney, as that goal was fantastic, and if Bonne had done his job we may well have had three points.
But surely the primary job of a left back is to defend. Having this 2-7-1 formation has thus far resulted in lots of frilly passing in the middle, resulting in too few goals and certainly a defence which is not as solid as last season. Let's hope we start to see improvement at both ends of the pitch. |  | | |

Yep. A few defensive concerns and probably could have done more at the back post to disrupt the Cheltenham player nodding in, but better in an attacking sense and combined well with Edwards a few times.
Having said that, if Coulson is more of a defender (like Donacien compared to KVY) then I don’t think it’s unreasonable for us to try and build a stronger back 4 as a platform to get the season moving in the right direction.
It’s understandable that an almost entirely new back line has issues settling in but we’ve leaked a few too many chances and goals when we’ve been put under pressure. |  |

Seems to me that when Edmundson is fit we would be better suited to three at the back, not going to happen as can’t see anyway, Unlike with 4-4-2, you can pretend it is 4-2-3-1 |  |

Again, I think the situation has to be that the best player, the player in form gets to play, regardless of how much they cost. If KVY finds his form and speed and is better than Burns then he should play, and vice versa. It’s the sort of healthy competition that will push the team forward. | |

I agree. Unfortunately at the moment KVY seems to have a lost a little agility / pace which were essentially his main assets.
With the system Cook plays it seems very important to have full backs with pace, not only to bomb forward but also recover defensively. I expect Coulson to come in for Penney soon too. | | | |

I would think he'll definitely be in contention before too long. KVY on the other side perhaps as well IMO. I thought our fullbacks were pretty naïve on Tuesday, we gave them so many cheap throw ins in our third, which given the threat of Tozer's throw ins was so frustrating to watch. We still seem to have that soft underbelly defensively.
Offensively, I don't think we offered a lot either from full back, aside from the goal of course. 1 or 2 crosses slung in from Donacien from memory, of average quality. |  |

I think it's a matter of time. Could be this weekend, could be Wimbledon - depends on Penney to a degree. One thing on Penney is i don't think his crossing is that great - gets into good positions but a lot of hitting the keeper etc from there. Hopefully Coulson is an upgrade there. |  |

Goal aside and after 30 mins he didn't push forward very much, this is part of the problem as to why we lost the game - not that its on him. We didn't have outlets and lost our shape little. You can't have it both ways. |  |

According to my Boro mate, Coulson is quality going forward and has played as a winger or left mid. He also states that he is still very raw, so by no means the finished article.
