Is this the end of the Tories? 12:40 - Oct 20 with 2465 viewsLegendofthePhoenix

Ever since John Major, Tory leaders have been desperately trying to hold the different factions together. For the first time, they chose a leader who was too stupid to understand what her role needed to do. She pandered to the far right, and the party is now splitting apart. I can really see this is the culmination of more than 20 years of ideologically opposed factions now coming into public view.
Outcome may be that they split into a far right UKIP-type party and a Social Democrat-type party. this has been brewing a long time.

In the interest of fairness the same could be said for the labour party for much of the last 20 years....but both beasts survive and will crawl on.

What ideological opposition though? The soft Tories are miles away from social democracy.

As far as I can see the only real difference is right-wing patrician politics vs. right-wing populist politics and its more overt disrespect and disregard for foreigners and minorities. The Conservatives’ electoral secret sauce has long been the combination of the two.

Here lie the myth of the PR guff

Politicians don't form into varied political parties and so seek representation in Parliament. They coalesce around 2 or 3 bigger parties and then hope to control the larger body from within. The trots in Labour and the ERG in the Tories - which is shown where PR exists.

So rather than addressing any of the real problem the not too bright are distracted by the PR nonsense. And with one leap they are free

The current mess is down solely to procedural matters, not electoral representation - viz the archaic Parliamentary voting procedure

Oh it’s right up your empty alley. That’s for sure.

Ignorance may be blissful but it’s certainly no way to deal with the real world and real issues. Which is what we’ve effectively not dealt with for the past couple of decades. And seemingly still won’t.

Are these pledges?

Of course, these are important measures to take. Nobody in their right mind would object either. The fact that it takes Starmer so long to get anywhere near them is the worry. Along with the likelihood of these things actually happening given his Johnsonesque dodgy record of keeping his word.

A few will drift toward the lib dems but the hardliners will stay convinced they are the real holders of the sacred flame.

I've no doubt that after their all too brief attempt at putting their ideas into practice they will depart back to their echo chamber, ranting away to each other.

And the Tory party will remain, like Olive Oil, pulled this way and that by Blue to and Popeye.

The only blessing is that the current upheaval will see the disappearance of such repellent creatures as Coffey, Braverman, Rees Mogg, Badenoch and Dorries.

Not a spark of human decency among any of them.

Both main parties need to split really, which is very unlikely under first past the post, this is a very strong reason to support PR.

PR won't in my view exclude the tories from power, but will see the fringes of the two parties break off and leave us hopefully with sensible centre left / centre right governments

Absolutely.

Helping people be productive to actually strengthen the economy doesn’t make any sense to them.
