You see a pair of Nike Air VMs in pink and green and that “colourway” is nice. But not heard it in general talk.. Where did you hear it and what was the conversation about?

Me neither. Apparently it means "any of a range of combinations of colours in which a style or design is available" and goes back as far as the 1940s, but it seems rather pretentious to me, as the following example indicates. "Our sweater comes in two colourways".

I'm hearing it a lot lately, been working with a marketing agency on some branding work and everything is 'colourway'. I kind of assumed it was when there was a range of colours in a pallet and it was referring to that, but doesn't appear to. Seems to just be used by them instead of colour. Then I was watching a George Clarke thing last night and it was 'colourway on the walls'. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

'Marketing Agency' and 'pretentious' in the same thread, who'd have thought it?

There is a first time for everything. I don't recall hearing the word until today. It is of course an Americanism - colorway. It isn't on this list, but could be added. https://www.pangea.global/blog/top-americanisms-the-british-find-annoying/

Guess I'm tuned into it now, like when you get a new car and notice everyone on the road with the same one, or perhaps even in the same 'colourway'. You'll all be noticing it now.

A range of sweaters in all royal blue, all scarlet, and all black, is a range of sweaters in three different colours. A range of sweaters in royal blue with pale blue cuffs and neckline, scarlet with white cuffs and neckline, and black with grey cuffs and neckline, is a range of sweaters in three different colourways, each of two different colours. So colourways means "a pattern or design comprising more than one colour", usually part of a range of the same design with different sets of colours used. So colourway is an efficient way of reducing the number of words used to describe the options for a particular item.

As noted below…. on 11:07 - Aug 18 with 4807 views | Bloots | ….tends to be used in fashion and branding, particularly trainers. Essentially it relates to more than one colour, so you couldn’t just say “colour” and also white trainers with blue stripes would be seen as a different “colour way” to blue trainers with white stripes so you couldn’t just say “colours”. 3 stripes for life ///

Nothing wrong with simply saying 'colours'' there, but guess that's much too simple, obvious & untrendy for them.
