Don't wish to defend another uninspiring performance 22:03 - Jun 25 with 3338 viewsbritbiker

But it's tough when the opposition has no intention of trying to move past the half way line.

Bit like when we were in div one and struggled to find a way past teams that were happy to achieve a nil nil draw.

Tbf Slovenia offered zero threat. We didn't mix it up or stretch them enough. We didn't vary our tactics until 85th minute.

Bellingham and Kane really very poor tonight.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I think that's valid, as I said on another chat look how we struggled last season, QPR & Watford at home, when a team went 11 at the back to try and hit us on the break.

Yeah. No one looking world class at this moment in time.

Hardly playing a giant in football terms. This is the 3rd game in the tournament poor in all of them. Also poor in friendlies building up to the tournament.

Mckenna got burns to make deep runs and the same with davis and we hit the diags whilst filling the box with our 10s to get onto whipped low balls in.

Also. These are players on 100k a week. Not being able to find a way past a defending side is criminal for that level of player. Worse for a manager to not be able to crack the code either.

I find it hard to defend a performance where our team and manager actively nullify any kind of attack we could potentially have down our left hand side. Slightly hamstrung by no left back, but come on, have a run at your fullback, overlap, put in a left footed cross even if it’s a crap one.

This might sound odd, but I irrationally hate that zip up t shirt Southgate wears too.

Those are the two key points.

Slovenia has a population lower than the Gaza Strip (2.1m)

This was not "just one of those days" for England - it's habit. It's the way we play.

and yet still finished top of the group and into the knockout stages of another major tournament...

its like theres a big bit of collective not seeing the bigger picture going on at the moment, egged on by the media representation of the matches, because they largely suspect Southgate is on his way so they no longer have to be nice about him, which isnt helping.

yes England should play better than they have done, tbf I thought they were million times better than the first group game tonight, but you have to still be in it to win it, and England are with little effort, Italy were minutes away from going out last night, Scotland are on their way home, which team would you rather be ?

Was at the game and tend to agree. Probably could have been some variation earlier, but second half was better initially. Personally, I tonight it was a perfect game to rest Kane and Jude but otherwise I'm not too fussed. Let's kick on now.

Yeah, Burns has been vital to the way we play. Think Palmer and Gordon will be our stars in the coming games.

The QPR game we were missing several key players, a stronger lineup and we’d have broken them down no problem. Town basically played 21 low block teams in our League One campaign, and picked the lock virtually every time. Dynamic passing and moving.

England have scraped a measly two goals because there’s no movement off the ball, and they are literally walking it up the pitch. Even on the few occasions Slovenia attacked, we didn’t break quickly, walking forward, stop, pass sideways. Rinse and repeat.

A lot of the throughballs nobody even ran onto as they didn’t read it. They look like 11 strangers and that’s on the coach. Really poor stuff, I can only assume people give GS a lot of slack because he’s a nice bloke. Talented coach, he is not.

That wasn't a bad performance, it was definitely better than the Denmark game. We looked better when we brought on players that all the fans have been saying that we should play. We got in good positions then every time there was a poor pass that meant the ball was intercepted, or we just lost momentum.
The problem is that Southgate didn't work out his team during the friendlies.

It's a tough one, do we just get behind England, or do we hope to be humiliated in the next round forcing Southgate to resign so that we can have some joy in our international football again?

It was a bad performance. We mustered about one shot in the first half against a poor Slovenia side. Second half was better for the first and last ten minutes of it but in between was the same slow passing it around with no movement off the ball. Someone compared it to us under Mick last night, it's worse than that, it's us under Lambert.

Did we struggle though? We got 98 points and over 100 goals in a league where many teams were doing that against us.

Don't think Southgate should be getting any free points here.

The no left back thing isn't an excuse for me, he could have easily picked a PL left back to back up Shaw

There were even calls to pick Leif Davis but that would have been nuts with no PL experience imho, even if he might prove to be the best English left back out there next season

Thoroughly agree with this point (although I think your OP is a bit askew, Slovenia had their moments and played with some organisation and composure) but are the England supporters who threw empty plastic cups at Southgate ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cw00y6x3j07o ) any better ?

For all of Scotland's shortcomings in this tournament I don't see similar sentiments towards Steve Clarke, even though his tactics were not dissimilar to Southgate's 'play for a result and damn the entertainment value.'

It’s fashionable to blame Southgate as all the England players are all a class above anything in the known universe - but the fault for all the mind numbing tedium is the format of the overblown competition - too many meaningless games where 0-0 will do rather nicely and virtually everyone qualifies

Here in France there’s nowhere near as much hype (same with the election). Les bleus haven’t even threatened to get a goal from open play - but nobody cares overmuch. Only Spain and Germany have played well…. Netherlands, Belgium and Italy have looked rubbish too.

It’s pretty straightforward to win these events by scarcely winning a game - as Argentina showed at the World Cup

Yep, it was normal for England. Same every game. There might be some decent individuals but they are a poor team. They look to literally have no idea what they are meant to be doing or where they are meant to be.

This side look lost so we are left hoping an individual will do something special. England’s group has been the weakest and with two goals in three games and the opposition keepers needing a deck chair and pina colada most of the time we’ve played our inept part.

And that part of the OP’s point isn’t it. It’s tough to play against vastly inferior teams for whom a draw is like a win and who therefore just set out to stop you playing. Town have consistently found this over the last few years, it’s why Prem teams often struggle against lowerdiv teams that everyone knows they should slaughter.

It was very telling last night how Slovenia celebrated at the final whistle - it was thier cup final and they got the result they wanted.

That said - we are so slow playing out from the back, so ponderous in our passing, devoid it seems of any system. It really is like the Lambert days of possession but no progression.

I was getting frustrated with Trippier, there were several occasions he got the ball on the left, with space in front of him and he turned back towards his own goal and passed it backwards. No desire to get forward at all.
